In this work, structural design and analysis of sandwich composite structure for automobile floor board were performed. Firstly, structural design requirement of automobile floor board was investigated. After structural design, the structural analysis of the automobile floor board were performed by the finite element analysis method. It was performed that the stress and displacement analysis at the applied load condition. After structural test of target structure, structural test results were compared with analysis results. Through the structural analysis, it was confirmed that the designed floor board structure is safety.

  • The composite lattice structure is a structure that supports the required load with the minimum weight and thickness. Composite lattice structure is manufactured by the filament winding process using impregnating high-strength carbon fiber with an epoxy resin. Filament winding process can laminate and manufacture only structurally necessary parts, composite lattice structure can be applied to aircraft fuselages, satellite and launch vehicles, and guided weapons to maximize weight reduction. In this paper, the development and evaluation of the composite lattice structure corresponding to the entire process from design, analysis, fabrication, and evaluation of large-scale cylindrical and conical composites lattice structure were performed. To be applicable to actual projectiles and guided weapons, we developed a cylindrical lattice structure with a diameter of 2,600 mm and a length of 2,000 mm, and a conical lattice structure with an upper diameter of 1,300 mm, a lower diameter of 2,500 mm, and a length of 900 mm. The performance of the developed composite lattice structure was evaluated through a load test.

  • Health monitoring is a major concern not only in the design and manufacturing but also in service stages for composite laminated structures. Excessive loads or low velocity impact can cause matrix cracks and delaminations that may severely degrade the load carrying capability of the composite laminated structures. To develop the health monitoring techniques providing on-line diagnostics of smart composite structures can be helpful in keeping the composite structures sound during their service. In this study, we discuss the signal processing techniques and some applications for health monitoring of composite structures using piezoceramic sensors and fiber optic sensors.

  • Static tests of the composite wing structure were performed to verify damage tolerance design. Both 5 cases of DLLT and 3 cases of DULT were completed to meet requirements for static strength. After inducing BVID and open hole damages on the critical areas of the composite wing based on associated regulations, the DULT and fracture test were performed. In major wing parts, the measured strains and displacements agreed well with those of structural analysis. The initial structural fracture occurred at the area having minimum margin of safety as expected by analysis. As a result, it was confirmed that results from analytic model and strength evaluation were similar to behaviors of the composite wing structure.

  • Composite lattice structures are tried to be used in various fields because of its benefit in physical properties. With increase of demand of the composite lattice structure, nondestructive testing technology is also required to certificate the quality of the manufactured structures. Recently, research on the development of the composite lattice structure in Republic of Korea was started and accordingly, fast and accurate non-destructive evaluation technology was needed to finalize the manufacturing process. This paper studied non-destructive testing methods for composite lattice structure using laser ultrasonic propagation imaging systems. Pulse-echo ultrasonic propagation imaging system was able to inspect a rib structure wrapped with a skin structure. To reduce the time of inspection, a band divider, which can get signal in different frequency bands at once, was developed. Its performance was proved in an aluminum sandwich panel. In addition, to increase a quality of results, curvature compensating algorithm was developed. On the other hand, guided wave ultrasonic propagation imaging system was applied to inspect delamination in a rib structure. To increase an area of inspection, multi-source ultrasonic wave propagation image was applied, and defects were successfully highlighted with variable time window amplitude mapping algorithm. These imply that ultrasonic propagation imaging systems provides fast and accurate non-destructive testing results for composite lattice structure in a stage of the manufacturing process.

  • The honeycomb composite joint structure designed for application to a tilting KTX railroad car body is subjected to bending loads of a cantilever type. Honeycomb sandwich composite panel-joint attached in the real tilting car body was fabricated and sectioned as several beam-joint specimens for the bending test. The fracture behaviors of these specimens under static loads were different from those under cyclic loads. Static bending loads caused shear deformation and fracture in the honeycomb core region, while fatigue cyclic bend loading caused delamination along the interface between the composite skin and the honeycomb core, and/or caused a fracture in the welded part jointed with the steel under-frame. These fracture behaviors could occur in other industrial honeycomb composite joints with similar sub-structures, and be used for improving design parameters of a honeycomb composite joint structure.

  • The quality control of composite structure includes inspection, testing and monitoring in all processes from receiving inspection to part fabrication. The purpose of these activities is to ensure that the design objectives are consistently achieved. The quality factors include material, receiving inspection, storage and shelf-life control, environmental control, testing, inspection and record control. This paper presents the process verification method using destructive test and quality control method in composite structure of aircraft. And it is believed that the destructive test will be basis to obtain a reliability of non-destructive test in complex composite structure and to ensure the design requirements in composite part.

  • This paper derives numerically new buckling Knockdown factors for the lightweight design of the composite propellant tanks for space launch vehicles. A nonlinear finite element analysis code, ABAQUS, is used for the present postbuckling analysis of composite cylinders under compressive loads. Various thickness ratios (R/t) and slenderness ratios (L/R) are considered and Single Perturbation Load Approach is applied to represent the geometric initial imperfection of the composite cylinder. For the composite cylinder with thickness ratio of 500 and slenderness ratio of 2.04, the buckling Knockdown factor derived in this work is higher by 84.38% than NASA's previous buckling design criteria. Therefore, it is investigated that a lightweight design is possible when the present Knockdown factors are used for the design of composite propellant tanks. In addition, it is shown that global buckling loads and buckling Knockdown factors decrease as the thickness ratio or slenderness ratio of composite cylinders increases.

  • The effective utilization of wood structure is encouraged to preserve natural resources and the global environment. Long-span and large-scale structures are preferred to promote demand for wood. This study attempts to develop new Fire-resistance Composite Material composed of Structural steel and Structural glued laminated timber for long-span and large-scale structures. Prior to take a fire-resistance test, compare properties of bending strength with Composite material composed of Structural steel and Structural glued laminated timber, structural steel and structural provides the stability of the structure, but the structural glued laminated timber has high value elasticity of bending. Using the Composite material will improve structural stability and Eco-friend construction environment.

  • In this paper, laser ultrasonic rotation scanning method was proposed to inspect and visualize defects in corner section of curved composite structure. L-shaped composite specimen with defects in its corner section were inspected using laser ultrasonic rotation scanning method. L-shaped specimens had artificial defects at three different depths to simulate delamination damage. All artificial defects were detected clearly in different time-of-flight according to their depths. Inspection result showed that the proposed method is suitable to inspect round corner section of curved composite structure without any special tools.
