  • The problem of delamination of composite tubes by impact has been acknowledged in aerospace and automobile industry. Non-destructive testing(NDT) methods in composite material structure are important to evaluate reliability of composite structure. There are many kinds of NDT methods which can detect the inside defect of the composite material such as Infrared Thermography(IRT). Infrared thermal imaging of object is different from that of a defect, in heated composite tubes with an internal defect, and then location and size of a defect can be measured by the analysis of thermal imaging pattern. In this study, Lock-in Infrared thermography detect internal defects of Impacted composite tubes by the inspection of infrared lay radiated from the surface of composite tubes.

  • In this paper, laser ultrasonic rotation scanning method was proposed to inspect and visualize defects in corner section of curved composite structure. L-shaped composite specimen with defects in its corner section were inspected using laser ultrasonic rotation scanning method. L-shaped specimens had artificial defects at three different depths to simulate delamination damage. All artificial defects were detected clearly in different time-of-flight according to their depths. Inspection result showed that the proposed method is suitable to inspect round corner section of curved composite structure without any special tools.

  • A defect analysis program for a composite motor case was developed to apply the ultrasonic signal processing method, based on the ultrasonic pulse-echo method. With the proposed defect analysis program, defects of FRP delamination and FRP/Rubber disbond in the composite motor case could be quantitatively measured. The defects detected in the composite motor case were in good agreement with the results measured with the computed tomography and video microscope. This paper described the development process of the defect analysis program to convert the ultrasonic test data into the C-Scan images.

  • In this study, the characteristics of filament wound composite/aluminum ring specimens were investigated at cryogenic temperature. The ring specimens were manufactured using carbon fibre and Type B epoxy resin which had been developed for cryogenic use. As a result of measuring thermal strains at -150℃, it was found that compressive thermal stress was induced in composite part on the contrary, tensile thermal stress in aluminum part which was about 32% of yield stress and in turn, caused aluminum to be yielded at lower load level. In addition, Thermal strains which resulted from finite element analysis showed good agreement with those of the experiment. After 6 mechanical loading cycles had been applied to the ring specimen at -150℃, tensile tests were performed at -150℃ using a split disk fixture. As a result, it was shown that composite strength in a liner-composite tank structure which is for the use of cryogenic propellant tank would be decreased by auto-frettage pressure which is applied to it.

  • This paper predicted deformation due to thermal residual stress in composites using finite element analysis. Temperature cycle, Model shape, Laminate angle, Stacking sequence, chemical shrinkage of resin, and thermal expansion are affect composite deformation. Compare the results of the analytical model with the actual model of the same shape. This paper suggests that the analytical results can be applied to actual Model.

  • One of the serious problems that make the flaw identification in a multi-layered thick composite panel more difficult is the interferenceeffect of the upper layer. To take care of such a problem, here we propose an image enhancement approach that can get rid of such an interference effect to ultrasonic C-scan images by a normalization of the acquired signals by a reference signals, and demonstrate its performance in the experiments. Specifically, three specimens with artificial flaws are prepared and ultrasonic C-scan images are acquired experimentally to eliminate the undesired interference effect. Cleat successes are observed in the present study demonstrating the high potential of the proposed algorithm as a practical image enhancement tool in many practical situations.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of fiber alignment in helicoidal structure on the mechanical properties of biomimetic fiber-reinforced composites. Using finite element analysis, circular biomimetic fiber composites were designed and studied. Various amounts of pressure loads were applied to a surface of the composites, and then bending and failure behaviors of the composites were analyzed. The results showed various failure morphologies according to the orientation of the fibers, and it turned out that the fiber alignment in helicoidal structure significantly improved the bending strength of the composite under pressure loading. This was because the fiber alignment in various directions for each layer dispersed effectively the fracture energy from the external load into multiple directions.
