  • Among many fabrication methods of composite materials, filament winding is the most effective method for fabricating axis-symmetric structures such as pressure tanks and pipes. Filament wound pressure tanks are under high internal pressure during the operation and it has the complexity in damage mechanisms and failure modes. For this reason, it is necessary to monitor the tank through its operation as well as whole fabrication process. A large number of sensors must be embedded into multi points of the tank from its fabrication step for monitoring the whole tank. Fiber optic sensors, especially fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensors are widely used for various applications because of good multiplexing capabilities. However, we need to develop the embedding technique of FBG sensors into harsh inner environment of the tank far the successful embedment. In this paper, we studied the embedding technique of a number of FBG sensors into filament wound pressure tanks considering multiplexing.

  • In this study, resin flow analysis of resin transfer moulding (RTM) method was performed for mould design of composite structure. The target composite structure was a tank used for fluid storage. Natural c fiber composite was adopted for composite structural design of the fluid storage tank. RTM was adopted for manufacturing of the tank using natural fiber composites. Resin flow analysis was performed to find the proper RTM conditions of the tank. The resin flow analysis was performed using the commercial FEM flow simulation software. After repeated analysis while changing the location of resin inlet and outlet, the proper resin filling time and pattern were found.

  • In this research, we investigated the hydrogen-gas filling characteristics of ultra-light composite tanks that have a plastic or aluminum liner inside the composite shell. The study was performed for different gas and tank temperatures. The temperature changes at various positions in the Type-4 tank during hydrogen-gas filling were monitored in order to understand the effects of the filling conditions. The results were compared with those obtained for a Type-3 tank. As the filling speed was increased, a quicker temperature rise was observed, and the temperature distribution over the entire region showed significant discrepancies.

  • The FBG sensors are inserted on the liners of the filament wound pressure tanks. The strains near the welding region of the liners are monitored in the hydro-pressurizing tests. The hydro-pressurizing tests consist of the proof tests at 4500 or 3300 psi and repeated test at the operating pressure, 3000 psi. The FBG sensors work well under $3000\mu\varepsilon$, but the strains calculated from the reflected signals are instable at the high strain level. The transverse compression on the sensor head results in the split of the reflected peaks, and the calculating algorism from the split peaks is not robust under the various signal condition. The FBG sensors fracture near $7500\mu\varepsilon$ level and lose their function permanently.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) is one of the most powerful techniques for detecting damages and identify damage location during operations. However, in case of the source location technique, there is some limitation in conventional AE technology, because it strongly depends on wave speed in the corresponding structures having heterogeneous composite materials. A compressed natural gas(CNG) pressure vessel is usually made of carbon fiber composite outside of vessel for the purpose of strengthening. In this type of composite material, locating impact damage sources exactly using conventional time arrival method is difficult. To overcome this limitation, this study applied the previously developed Contour D/B map technique to four types of CNG storage tanks to identify the source location of damages caused by external shock. The results of the identification of the source location for different types were compared.

  • Lightweight hydrant tanks increase the amount of water that can be carried by fire trucks, resulting in longer water spray times during the initial firefighting process, which can minimize human and property damages. In this study, the applicability of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites as a material for lightweight hydrant tanks was investigated. In particular, the resin for manufacturing CFRP hydrant tanks must meet various requirements, such as excellent mechanical properties, formability, and dimensional stability. In order to identify a resin that satisfies these conditions, five commercially available resins, including epoxy(KFR-120V), unsaturated polyesters(G-650, HG-3689BT, LSP8020), vinyl ester(KRF-1031) were selected as candidates, and their characteristics were analyzed to investigate the suitability for manufacturing a CFRP hydrant tank. Based on the analyses, KRF-1031 exhibited the most suitable properties for hydrant tanks. Particularly, CFRP with KRF-1031 exhibited successful results for thermal stability and elution tests.

  • Polymer composites were used to reduce the weight of the spacecraft's cryogenic propellant tank. Since these materials were directional, the permeability performance of the gas permeated or delivered in the stacking direction was an indicator directly related to performance such as tank stability and onboard fuel quantity estimation. In addition, the results of permeation measurements and optical analysis of the surface to verify the effect of the number of cycles exposed to the cryogenic-room temperature environment are included. As a result, the permeability was inversely proportional to the thickness and was proportional to the number of thermal shocks, and it was verified that the permeability performance was suitable for the cryogenic propellant tank material for the space launch vehicle.

  • In this study, the design method of filament wound composite pressure tanks was established by using finite element analyses. Pressure tanks were designed with and without a load sharing metallic liner. A GUI(graphic user interface) program was developed to increase the efficiency of analyses. The replacement ratio was defined in order to replace a metal pressure tank with a composite one. Finally, the best design model that is satisfied with design requirements was suggested.
