  • Since conventional methods for the reconstruction of 3D objects used a number of cameras or pictures, they required specific hardwares or they were sensitive to the photography environment with a lot of processing time. In this paper, we propose a 3D object reconstruction method using one photograph based on structured light in ubiquitous environments. We use color pattern of the conventional method for structured light. In this paper, we propose a novel pipeline consisting of various image processing techniques for line pattern extraction and matching, which are very important for the performance of the object reconstruction. And we propose the optimal cost function for the pattern matching. Using our method, it is possible to reconstruct a 3D object with efficient computation and easy setting in ubiquitous or mobile environments, for example, a smartphone with a subminiature projector like Galaxy Beam.

  • This paper presents an efficient method for estimationg and correcting the slant of off-line handwritten Hangul strings. In the proposed method, after extracting contours from input image.Hough tranform is applied to the contours to detect lines and estimate slants of the lines. When Hough trans form is applied to the contours, pixels which are not parts of the same stroke could be detected as a line.In order to exclude these lines from slant estimation process, detected lines which have the length less than threshold are eliminated.Experiments have been performed with address images which were extracted from live envelopes provided by Seoul Mail Center.Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to the previous methods, which had been done with handwritten English strings.in estimation the slant of off-line handwritten Hangul strings.

  • A hardware implementation of MOD(moving object detection) algorithm using EGML(effective Gaussian mixture learning)- based background subtraction to detect moving objects in video is described. Some approximations of EGML calculations are applied to reduce hardware complexity, and pipelining technique is adopted to improve operating speed. The MOD processor designed in Verilog-HDL has been verified by FPGA-in-the-loop verification using MATLAB/Simulink. The MOD processor has 2,218 slices on the Virtex5-XC5VSX95T FPGA device and its throughput is 102 MSamples/s at 102 MHz clock frequency. Evaluation results of the MOD processor for 12 images in the IEEE CDW-2012 dataset show that the average recall value is 0.7631, the average precision value is 0.7778 and the average F-measure value is 0.7535.

  • This paper presents an orientation-based adaptive prediction method for effective lossless image compression. For a robust prediction, the proposed method estimates the directional information and the property near the current pixel in a support region-based fashion, not a pixel-based one which is sensitive to a small variation. We improve the prediction performance effectively by selection of the prediction pixel adaptively according to the similarity between support regions of the current pixel and the neighboring pixels. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves excellent prediction performance measured in entropy of the prediction error compared to a number of conventional prediction methods such as MED, GAP, and EDP. Moreover the complexity of the proposed algorithm measured by average execution time is low compared to MED which is the simplest prediction method.

  • Recently, DVC (Distributed Video Coding) techniques are drawing a lot of interests as one of the future research works to achieve low complexity encoding in various applications. But, due to the limited computational complexity, the performances of DVC algorithms are inferior to those of conventional international standard video coders, which use zig-zag scan, run length code, entropy code and skipped macroblock. In this paper, in order to overcome the performance limit of the DVC system, the distortion for every block is estimated when side information is found at the decoder and then we propose a new selective block encoding scheme which provides the encoder side with the motion information for the highly distorted blocks and then allows the sender to encode the motion compensated frame difference signal. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the coding efficiency of the proposed scheme reaches almost that of the conventional inter-frame coding scheme.

  • If the region of interest (ROI) is set within the picture of image and video and the high quality is provided in ROI compared to Non ROI, then overall subjective picture quality can be increased. ROI extracted by the color camera only increases the calculation complexity and reduces the extraction accuracy. In this paper, we use depth camera to set the ROI and calculate the object distance from camera, then propose a method that the different picture quality is controlled by depending on the distance of an object. That is, we apply a high quantization step size to the far object, but relatively a low quantization step size to the close object, so better picture quality can be provided. Simulation results show that applying the differential quantization step size to the distance of objects by the proposed method can improve the subjective picture quality.

  • Low density parity check (LDPC) code is widely used, since it shows superior performance close to Shannon limit and its decoding complexity is lower than turbo code. Recently, it is used as a channel code to decode Wyner-Ziv frames in distributed video coding (DVC) system. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to design the parity check matrix H of LDPC codes. In order to apply LDPC code to DVC system, the LDPC code should have rate compatibility. Thus, we also propose a method to merge check nodes of LDPC code to attain the rate compatibility. LDPC code is designed using ACE algorithm and check nodes are merged for a given code rate to maximize the error correction capability. The performance of the designed LDPC code is analyzed extensively by computer simulations.

  • In this paper. we propose an efficient method for implementing hi-directional pixel-based focusing(BiPBF) based on a sparse array imaging technique. The proposed method can improve spatial resolution and frame rate of ultrasound imaging with reduced hardware complexity by synthesizing transmit apertures with a small number of sparsely distributed subapertures. As the distance between adjacent subapertures increases, however. the image resolution tends to decrease due to the elevation of grating lobes. Such grating lobes can be eliminated in conventional synthetic aperture imaging techniques. On the contrary, grating lobes arisen from employing sparse synthetic transmit apertures can not be eliminated, which has been shown analytically in this paper. We also propose the condition and method for suppressing the grating lobes below -40dB, which is generally required in practical imaging. by placing the transmit focal depth at a near depth and properly selecting the subaperture distance in Proportion to receive aperture size. The results of both the Phantom and in vivo experiments show that the proposed method implements two-wav dynamic focusing using a smaller number of subapertures, resulting in reduced system complexity and increased frame rate.

  • The purpose of this study was to help teachers for their teaching practice by analyzing the excellent lesson videos. To analyze the lesson videos between teacher and students, the researchers classified excellent lesson classes into four types as 'Discourse type', 'Representation type', 'Operation type' and 'Complex type' by mathematical communication pattern and kept close watch each lesson videos. Mathematical communication of the best discourse type classroom was analyzed in terms of questioning, explaining, and the sources of mathematical ideas. As a result, the number of Discourse type classes was 6. Operation type classes were 16 owing to characteristic of elementary class. Representation type class was 1 and Complex type class was 1. The Classes excluding Operation type was more planned by teachers. Teachers need to know about mathematical communication accurately because they designed just 5 lesson plan considering mathematical communication of students and only one of the lessons has the intellectual purpose of communication. Furthermore teachers should reflect questioning for student-to-student in their lesson plan.

  • This paper has proposed a single image based fog degree quantification method by measuring both transmission and local contrast. The proposed method estimates the foggy expected regions from transmission, and then assesses the size of regions of which transmission values are foggy expected ones and the range of local contrast value on such regions. Compared with fog degree gauged by the scattering coefficient measurement sensor, the proposed method quantifies the fog degree with more than 95% accuracy for images containing various objects and environments. We also developed a technique that measures the local contrast values in process of measuring transmission values. So, the proposed method does not increase complexity compared to the existing transmission method.
