  • In most digital imaging applications, high-resolution images or videos are usually desired for later image processing and analysis. The image signal obtained from general imaging system occurs image degradation during the process of image acquirement caused by the optics, physical constraints and the atmosphere effects. Super-resolution reconstruction, one of the solution to address this problem, is image reconstruction technique that produces a high-resolution image from several low-resolution frames in video sequences. In this paper, we propose an improved super-resolution method using Projection onto Convex Sets (POCS) method based on Shift & Add (S&A). The image using conventional algorithms is sensitive to noise. To solve this problem, we propose a fusion algorithm of S&A and POCS. Also we solve the problem using BLPF (Butterworth Low-pass Filter) in frequency domain as optical blur. Our method is robust to noise and has sharpness enhancement ability. Experimental results show that the proposed super-resolution method has better resolution enhancement performance than other super-resolution methods.

  • While high resolution images are required for various applications, aliased low-resolution images are only available due to the physical limitations of sensors. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to reconstruct a high resolution image from multiple aliased low-resolution images, which is based on the generalized multichannel deconvolution technique. The conventional approaches are based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) since the aliasing effect is easily analyzed in the frequency domain. However, the useful solution may not be available in many cases, i.e., the underdetermined cases or the insufficient subpixel information cases. In order to compensate for such ill-posedness, the generalized multichannel regularization was adopted in the spatial domain. Furthermore, the usage of the discrete cosine transform instead of the DFT leads to the computationally efficient reconstruction algorithm. The validity of the proposed algorithm is both theoretically and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. It is also shown that the effect of inaccurate motion information is reduced by regularization.

  • An on-line registration technique is presented to register multi-view range images for the 3D reconstruction of real objects. Using a range camera, we first acquire range images and photometric images continuously. In the range images, we divide object and background regions using a predefined threshold value. For the coarse registration of the range images, the centroid of the images are used. After refining the registration of range images using a projection-based technique, we use a modified KLT(Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi) tracker to match photometric features in the object images. Using the modified KLT tracker, we can track image features fast and accurately. If a range image fails to register, we acquire new range images and try to register them continuously until the registration process resumes. After enough range images are registered, they are integrated into a 3D model in offline step. Experimental results and error analysis show that the proposed method can be used to reconstruct 3D model very fast and accurately.

  • This paper presents a compression algorithm applicable for transmitting a HPO hologram data. The proposed algorithm exploits a modulating function to compress the bandwidth of the hologram pattern, resulting in decimation due to relaxed Nyquist sampling constraints. At the receiver, the compressed data will be interpolated and compensated via being divided by the modulating function. We also present compression rate and analyze the resolution of a reconstructed image and the periodicity of harmonic interferences. Finally, we shows the validity of the proposed algorithm by simulation where a reconstructed image from undersampled data is compared with a reconstructed image obtained through decimatioin by modulating function, interpolation and compensation.

  • Generally a moving picture suffers from motion blur, due to relative motion between moving objects and the image formation system. The purpose of this paper is to propose teh model for the motion blur and the restoration method using the regularized iterative technique. In the proposed model, the boundary effect between moving objects and background is analyzed mathematically to overcome the limit of the spatially invariant model. And we present the motion-based image segmentation technique for the object-based image restoration, which is the modified version of the conventional segmentation method. Based on the proposed model, the restoration technique removes the motion blur by using the estimated motion parameter from the result of the segmentation.

  • A hybrid genetic algorithm based learning method for the morphological neural networks (MNN) is proposed. The morphological neural networks are based on max-plus algebra, therefore, it is difficult to optimize the coefficients of MNN by the learning method with derivative operations. In order to solve the difficulty, a hybrid genetic algorithm based learning method to optimize the coefficients of MNN is used. Through the image compression/reconstruction experiment using test images extracted from standard image database(SIDBA), it is confirmed that the quality of the reconstructed images obtained by the proposed method is better than that obtained by the conventional neural networks.

  • In this paper, a new image compression algorithm using the generality of the multilaryer perceptron is proposed. Proposed algorithm classifies image into some classes, and trains them through the multilayer perceptron. Multilayer perceptron which trained by the above method can do compression and reconstruction of the nontrained image by the generality. Also, it reduces memory size of the side of receiver and quantization error. For the experiment, we divide Lena image into 16 classes and train them through one multilayer perceptron. The experimental results show that we can get excellent reconstruction images by doing compression and reconstruction for Lena image, Dollar image and Statue image.

  • The exemplar-based inpainting model is widely used to remove objects from natural images and to restore a damaged region. This paper presents a method which improves the performance of the conventional exemplar-based inpainting model by modifying three major parts in the model: data term, confidence term and patch selection. While the conventional data term is calculated using the local gradient, the proposed method uses 16 compass masks to get the global gradient to make the method robust to noise. To overcome the problem that the confidence term gets negligible in the inside of the eliminated region, a method is proposed which makes the confidence term decrease slowly in the eliminated region. The patch selection procedure is modified so that the closer patch has higher weight. Experiments showed that the proposed method produced more natural images and lower reconstruction error than the conventional exemplar-based inpainting.

  • Simplified factorizing-technique to improve the efficiency on computational procedure and the complexity of the conventional back-projection algorithm, which is used to reconstruct airborne FMCW-SAR image, is suggested, and the reconstruction process of SAR image by this simplified factorizing-technique are presented in this paper. This technique can be efficiently applied to airborne FMCW-SAR having a relatively narrow beamwidth and long synthetic aperture length, and its basic rationale is to exclude the data that has low level of contribution during computational procedure. Using the raw data of practical airborne FMCW-SAR system, performances of this proposed technique such as SAR image quality and processing time were compared and analyzed.
