The present study has been accomplished to elucidate the effect of radiation heat transfer in the heat transfer analysis of refrigerator gasket, which has near 30% of refrigerator heat loss. The numerical heat transfer analysis has been conducted with the simplified modeling of refrigerator gasket. From the present CFD analysis, heat loss at the gasket is $25.6W/m^2$ for the case without radiation effect and that for the case with radiation effect is $55.0W/m^2$, which is 2.2 times greater heat loss. The radiation protection layers were installed in the gasket from 0 to 7 and the case with 7 layers has 33% reduction effect of heat loss compared with the case without any radiation protection layer. Additionally, it is better effect of radiation heat loss reduction that the radiation protection layers would be placed to the outer or inner side of gasket rather than placing to the center of gasket.

A linear stability analysis of a diffusion flame with radiation heat loss is performed to identify linearly unstable conditions for the Damk$\ddot{o}$hler number and radiation intensity. We adopt a counterflow diffusion flame with unity Lewis number as a model. Near the kinetic limit extinction regime, the growth rates of disturbances always have real eigenvalues, and a neutral stability condition perfectly falls into the quasi-steady extinction. However, near the radiative limit extinction regime, the eigenvalues are complex, which implies pulsating instability. A stable limit cycle occurs when the temperatures of the pulsating flame exceed the maximum temperature of the steady-state flame with real positive eigenvalues. If the instantaneous temperature of the pulsating flame is below the maximum temperature, the flame cannot recover and goes to extinction. The neutral stability curve of the radiation-induced instability is plotted over a broad range of radiation intensities.
There are mainly 3 heat losses from solar collector; top, bottom, and edge heat loss. Usually edge heat loss is small so that could be neglected. Of the total thermal losses occurring in a flat plate solar collector, top loss heat losses are dominant. Therefore it is necessary to calculate the top loss coefficient accurately in order to find out performance of solar collector. The flat plate solar collector(regenerator in summer) used in this study was made for year-round all conditioning. In order to find out collector efficiency for heating in winter without a system change, outdoor experiment was done. The top loss coefficient of this collector was about 3 to $4.5W/m^2^{\circ}C$. Futhermore use of selective coating in trickling surface can improve a performance of flat plate solar collector.

Extinction characteristics of hydrogen-air diffusion flames at various pressures are investigated numerically by adopting counterflow flame configuration as a model flamelet. Especially, effect of radiative heat loss on flame extinction is emphasized. Only gas-phase radiation is considered here and it is assumed that $H_2O$ is the only radiating species. Radiation term depends on flame thickness, temperature, $H_2O$ concentration, and pressure. From the calculated flame structures at various pressures, flame thickness decreases with pressure, but its gradient decreases at high pressure. Flame temperature and mole fraction of $H_2O$ increase slightly with pressure. Accordingly, as pressure increases, radiative heat loss becomes dominant. When radiative heat loss is considered, radiation-induced extinction is observed at low strain rate in addition to transport-induced extinction. As pressure increases, flammable region, where flame is sustained, shifts to the high-temperature region and then, shrunk to the point on the coordinate plane of flame temperature and strain rate. The present numerical results show that radiative heat loss can reduce the operating range of a combustor significantly.

Radiation-induced oscillatory instability in diffusion flames is numerically investigated with nonlinear dynamics considered. As the simplest flame model, a diffusion flame established in the stagnant mixing layer is employed with optically thin gas-phase radiation and unity Lewis numbers for all species. Attention is focused on the radiation-induced extinction regime, which occurs at large $Damk\ddot{o}hler$ number. Once the steady flame structure is obtained for a prescribed value of the initial $Damk\ddot{o}hler$ number, transient solution of the flame is calculated after a finite amount of the $Damk\ddot{o}hler$-number perturbation is imposed on the steady flame. Transient evolution of the flame exhibits three types of flame-evolution behaviors, namely decaying oscillatory solution, diverging solution to extinction and stable limit-cycle solution. A dynamic extinction boundary is identified for laminar flamelet library.

Radiation-induced oscillatory instability in CH$_4$/Air diffusion flames is numerically investigated by adopting detailed chemistry. Counterflow diffusion flame is employed as a model flamelet and optically thin gas-phase radiation is assumed. Attention is focused on the extinction regime induced by radiative heat loss, which occurs at low strain rate. Once a steady flame structure is obtained for a prescribed value of initial strain rate, transient solution of the flame is calculated after a finite amount of strain-rate perturbation is imposed on the steady flame. Depending on the initial strain rate and the amount of perturbed strain rate, transient evolution of the flame exhibits various types of flame-evolution behaviors. Basically, the dynamic behaviors can be classified into two types, namely oscillatory decaying solution and diverging solution leading to extinction.
Linear stability analysis of radiating counterflow diffusion flames is numerically conducted to examine the instability characteristics of cellular patterns. Lewis number is assumed to be 0.5 to consider diffusional-thermal instability. Near kinetic limit extinction regime, growth rates of disturbances always have real eigen-values and neutral stability condition of planar disturbances perfectly falls into quasi-steady extinction. Cellular instability of disturbance with transverse direction occurs just before steady extinction. However, near radiative limit extinction regime, the eigenvalues are complex and pulsating instability of planar disturbances appears prior to steady extinction. Cellular instability occurs before the onset of planar pulsating instability, which means the extension of flammability.

The current study focuses on the consistent analysis of heat transfer in multichannel volumetric solar receivers used for concentrating solar power. Changes in the properties of the absorbing material and channel dimensions are considered in an optical model based on the Monte Carlo ray-tracing method and in a one-dimensional heat transfer model that includes conduction, convection, and radiation. The optical model results show that most of the solar radiation energy is absorbed within a very small channel length of around 15 mm because of the large length-to-radius ratio. Classification of radiation losses reveals that at low absorptivity, increased reflection losses cause reduction of the receiver efficiency, notwithstanding the decrease in the emission loss. As the average temperature increases because of the large channel radius or small mass flow rate, both emission and reflection losses increase but the effect of emission losses prevails.

Nonlinear characteristics of cellular counterflow diffusion flame near the radiative extinction limit at large Damk$\ddot{o}$hler number are numerically investigated. Lewis number is assumed to be 0.5 and flame evolution is calculated by imposing an infinitesimal disturbance to a one-dimensional(1-D) steady state flame. The early stage of nonlinear development is very similar to that predicted in a linear stability analysis. The disturbance with the wavenumber of the fastest growing mode emerges and grows gradually. Eventual, an alternating pattern of reacting and quenching stripes is developed. The cellular flame temperature is higher than that of 1-D flame because of the gain of the total enthalpy. As the Damk$\ddot{o}$hler number is further increased, the shape of the cell becomes circular to increase the surface area per unit reacting volume. The cellular flames do not extinguish but survive even above the 1-D steady state extinction condition.
Nonlinear dynamics of pulsating instability in radiating counterflow diffusion flames is numerically investigated by imposing Damk$\ddot{o}$hler number perturbation. Stable limit-cycle solutions occur in small ranges of Damk$\ddot{o}$hler numbers past bifurcation point of instability. Period doubling cascade and chaotic behaviors appear just before dynamic extinction occurs. Nonlinear dynamics is also studied when large disturbances are imposed to flames. For weak steady flames, the dynamic extinction range shrinks as the magnitudes of disturbances are increased. However, strong steady flames can overcome relatively large disturbances, thereby the dynamic extinction range extending. Stable limit-cycle behaviors reappears prior to dynamic extinction when the steady flames are strong enough.
