The Study of Relationships between tile Abdominal Fat Distribution and Sasangin (허리둘레로 평가한 복부 비만의 사상인별 차이 분석)

  • Objectives : Waist circumference (WC) is the best simple anthropometric index of abdominal visceral adipose tissue accumulation and obesity-related health risks. We measured WC and other anthropometric indices to assess relationships between the abdominal fat distribution and Sasang constitution. Methods : 196 participants who completed a QSCC II were measured some anthropometric indicies - height, weight and WC. Collected data were stratified by sex and analysed by oneway analysis of variances among constitutional groups. Results : In men, there were significant differences in weight, BMI and WC among Constitutional groups (p<0.001). In women, there were significant differences in weight and BMI, but there were no significant difference in WC among Constitutional groups. Conclusions : There was a significant relationship between taeumin men md abdominal chesty. But, in women, there was no clear relationship between abdominal obesity and participant's constitution.

A Case Report for the Effects of Pharmacopuncture Combined Thread Implantation Therapy to Improve Localized Obesity (부분비만 개선을 위한 매선과 약침의 병행 치료 임상 효과 증례 보고)

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of pharmacopuncture combined thread implantation therapy for treating localized obesity. The study was conducted on 3 subjects with abdominal localized fat, 1 subject with thigh and 1 subject with calf localized fat. We practiced two kinds of pharmacopunture, which were cultivated wild ginseng and contacting Ephedra sinica pharmacopuncture. In addition, we practiced thread implantation to 20 points on muscle membrane layer. We performed these treatments once in 2 weeks, totally for 3 times. After treatments, abdominal circumference and waist-hip ratio were reduced by 4.6 % and 0.13, respectively. In addition, circumferences of thigh and calf were reduced by 5.8 % and 4%. We supposed that this combined therapy could be useful to deal with localized fat deposit. Long-term evaluation and further studies are required to identify effect size of this therapy.

Health Behavior Factors Affecting Waist Circumference as an Indicator of Abdominal Obesity (복부비만의 지표인 허리둘레에 영향을 미치는 건강행태요인 -"2001년 국민건강.영양조사"의 자료를 기반으로)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to identify the socioeconomic factors, the psychosocial factors and the heath behavior factors that have an influence on abdominal obesity, as measured by using the waist circumference. Methods: Data was obtained from individuals aged above 20 years who had their waist circumference measured on the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001, which was a cross-sectional health survey. Results: Regression analysis of the factors that affect abdominal obesity showed that the education level, income, smoking, duration of smoking, drinking consumption, frequency of exercises and sleeping were the associated factors for abdominal obesity. For men, the duration of smoking, education level, income and drinking consumption were the associated factors for abdominal obesity. For woman, the education level, income, duration of smoking, drinking consumption and frequency of exercise were the associated factors for abdominal obesity. Conclusions: Abdominal obesity is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality, and it is associated with chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Based on the findings, it is essential to modify heath behaviors for preventing abdominal obesity, which is a condition associated with the incidence of chronic disease.

Association of Obesity and Oral Health Status in Adults (일부 성인의 비만과 구강건강 상태의 연관성)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for the oral health and obesity management of adults by grasping the relationship between obesity and oral health. Among the patients who visited the dental clinic, 229 patients who agreed to fill out questionnaires were analyzed by self - filling questionnaire. Body mass index and waist circumference were used for the study of obesity. Body mass index and poor periodontal health status were significantly higher(33.3%) and abdominal obesity and poor periodontal health status were 10.9%.Abdominal obesity was significantly higher(28.6%) in the group with less than 20 teeth. Body mass index and abdominal obesity were higher in body pain, psychological discomfort, physical abilities, psychological abilities, social disadvantage, and oral health than in normal subjects. As a result of correlation analysis with obesity index, it was found that the more period of obesity, the more periodontal disease and mucosal state related symptoms appeared(p<0.05). Therefore, in order to solve health problems such as obesity, it is necessary to recognize the importance of oral health and to make efforts to induce positive oral health behavior.

Effects of the Short-Term Weight Control Program on Periodontal Health in the University Students: A Pilot Study (일개 대학생의 단기 체중조절 프로그램이 치주건강에 미치는 영향: 사전연구)

  • Recent cross-sectional studies indicate that obesity is a risk factor for periodontal disease. This study was aimed to investigate whether the four-week weight control program including caloric restriction and exercise training could have an effect on periodontal health. Forty-one obese (body mass index [BMI] ${\geq}25.0$) and five overweight ($23.0{\leq}BMI<25.0$) students participated in the weight control program. Anthropometric data and oral examination data were collected at the baseline and at the 27th day. BMI, waist hip ratio (WHR), and percent of body fat (PBF) of the subjects decreased significantly, but gingival index, sites with bleeding on probing (BOP), and sites with shallow pocket depth didn't show the significant changes in paired t-test. There was no difference in the outcomes according to smoking, drinking alcohol, and sex. Nevertheless, PBF and sites with BOP (r=0.777) and WHR and sites with shallow pocket depth (r=0.444) showed positive correlations. PBF accounted for 58.9% of the variance in sites of BOP in regression analysis. We suggested that obesity might relate with periodontal health, although it was not clear whether weight control could influence on periodontal health directly.

Intra-abdominal Retained Surgical Gauze in Two Dogs (개의 복강내 잔존 수술용 거즈 2예)

  • This report describes the retained surgical gauze in two dogs that had ovariohysterectomy previously. The elapsed time between surgery and diagnosis of retained surgical gauze in two dogs was 30 and 16 months, respectively. Radiographic signs included localized abdominal mass (case 1, 2) and soft tissue swelling (case 2). Retained surgical gauze was imaged by survey radiography, ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT). Ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic mass with irregular hyperechoic center in case 1, and hypoechoic mass with oval hyperechoic center and acoustic shadowing in case 2. In CT examination of case 2, hyperdense mass with a thick peripheral rim enhancing in contrast study was shown. Cytologic examination of both cases revealed abscess and granuloma respectively. The lesions were surgically removed. The possibility of retained surgical gauze should be considered in animals with a history of previous surgery with abnormal mass.

  • The association between heavy metals in the blood and obesity has been examined in many studies. However, inconsistencies have been observed in the results from these studies. The present study was conducted using data from 119,181 participants of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) for 11 years in 2005 and between 2008 and 2017. The subjects with missing heavy metal blood tests, health interview data, and health examination data were excluded from the study. The study population comprised 1,844 individuals (972 men, 872 women) who were eligible for inclusion. It was found that obesity and abdominal obesity were associated with an increase in both blood mercury (P<0.001) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (P<0.001). After adjusting the confounding factors, those with concurrent high levels of ALT and the highest tertile of mercury showed an increased risk of obesity (odds ratio 4.46, 95%, confidence interval 2.23~8.90, P<0.001) as well as abdominal obesity (odds ratio 5.36, 95%, confidence interval 2.57~11.17, P<0.001). The interrelationship of mercury and ALT with the parameters of body mass index (P for interaction=0.009) and waist circumference (P for interaction=0.012), respectively, have been observed to be significant, suggesting that the reciprocal relationship could contribute to obesity and abdominal obesity.

Preliminary analysis of metabolic syndrome components in Korean adolescents by using Korean national health and nutrition examination Survey pooling data (1998, 2001, and 2005) (한국국민건강영양조사 병합자료(1998년, 2001년, 2005년)를 이용한 소아청소년에서의 대사증후군 진단 요인의 기초 분석)

  • Purpose :This study aimed to estimate age- and gender-specific cut points for metabolic syndrome (MS) components, including body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP), triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and glucose. Methods :Data from the 1998, 2001, and 2005 Korean NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) were analyzed (n=4164; 2,139 boys and 2,025 girls, aged 10-19 years). Height, weight, waist circumference (WC), BP, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and fasting glucose were measured. Results :BMI over $25kg/m^2$ represents the $85^{th}P$ (percentile) in 17-year-old boys and the $90^{th}P$ in 17-year-old girls. A level of WC higher than that of the cutoff points of Asian adults was found in the $90^{th}P$ of 17-year-old boys and girls. The $90^{th}P$ of boys aged 15 years old and the $95^{th}P$ of 13-year-old were included in the range of systolic BP over 130 mm Hg. Over the $75^{th}P$ of the group showed triglycerides greater than 110 mg/dL, (criterion of MS presented by NCEP-ATP III) and the $90^{th}P$ of the group showed triglycerides greater than 150 mg/dL by IDF. An HDL cholesterol level of 40 mg/dL represents the $25^{th}P$ in boys and the $10^{th}P$ in girls. A glucose level greater than 110 mg/dL represents the $95^{th}P$ and greater than 100 mg/dL represents the $90^{th}P$. Conclusion :Values of the $90^{th}P$ of MS components in late adolescent boys (WC, BP, and triglycerides) and girls (WC and triglycerides) were very high and in close proximity to the diagnostic criteria of adult MS.

Correlations among Life Stress, Sleep, Anthropometric Measurement and Nutrient Intakes of College Students (일부 지역 대학생의 생활 스트레스와 수면, 신체계측, 영양소섭취 상태와의 상관관계)

  • This study was performed in order to investigate the stress levels, sleep, anthropometric measurement and nutrient intakes their correlations of college students. General characteristics, stress scores using a stress test, sleep scores using a sleep test, anthropometric measurement, body composition using Inbody 3.0 and nutrient intakes using 3-day recalls were measured in 353 subjects (183 males and 170 females). Mean total stress score of the male students was 68.2${\pm}$45.0 and that of the female students was 86.5${\pm}$48.7. Stress for study, future, economic and value-related factors were higher than other factors in both male and female students. Female students were more stressed than male in friend, family, study, future and value-related factors. Mean sleeping time and sleep scores of the male students were 7.0 hrs and 40.6${\pm}$5.7, respectively and that of the female students were 7.1 hrs and 41.5${\pm}$5.3, respectively. Mean height, weight, percent body fat (PBF) and waist-hip ratio (WHR) of the male students were 174.8 cm, 73.3 kg, 19.0% and 0.84, respectively. Mean height, weight, PBF, and WHR of the female students were 161.7 cm, 55.3 kg, 28.7% and 0.81, respectively. Mean energy and protein intakes of the male students were 2026.3 kcal (77.9% EER) and 83.0 g (150.9% RI) and those of the female students were 1538.2 kcal (73.2% EER) and 60.7 g (134.9% RI), respectively. In male students, sleep duration, professor and future problem showed significantly negative correlation (p<0.05). For both male and female students, in correlations between sleep scores, life stress experience frequency and importance, the total scores showed significantly negative correlation (p<0.01). Sleep scores (sleep quality) have more significant correlation than sleep duration in life stress. In male students, correlations between economic problem and weight, waist circumference and hip circumference showed significantly negative correlation. In female students, correlations between different gender problem and body mass index (p<0.05), PBF (p<0.01), WHR (p<0.01) and obesity degree (p<0.05) showed significantly negative correlation while correlation between study problem and PBF (p<0.05), WHR (p<0.05) showed significantly positive correlation. In male students, there were significantly positive correlations between life stress experience frequency and carbohydrate calcium, iron, vitamin A; correlation between importance and calcium, iron as well as correlation between total life stress scores and iron (p<0.05). In female students, correlation between life stress experience frequency and thiamin along with correlation between importance and thiamin showed significant negative correlation (p<0.05). College students need to practice good life habits for the purpose of correctly managing life stress.

Anthropometric Measurements and Biochemical Nutritional Status of the Older Residents (50 years and over) in Andong Area (2) (안동주변 농촌지역 50세 이상 주민의 신체계측치 및 생화학적 영양상태에 관한 연구 (2))

  • This study aimed to assess the health status based on the anthropometric and biochemical measurements of middle-aged and elderly people living in Andong area. The subjects were 1,384 people (532 males, 852 females) aged 50 years and over (average 62.7 years). The mean anthropometric values for males and females were heights of 163.7 and 151.5 cm; weights 63.6 and 57.3 kg; body mass index (BMI) 23.6 and $24.9kg/m^2$; body fat 21.8 and 31.8%, respectively. Height and weight were lower, however, waist circumference (in female) and BMI were higher than those of the 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS). Obesity incidences of male and female subjects were 28.7% and 47.3% by BMI; 25.8% and 50.8% by % body fat; and 15.6% and 80.9% by waist circumference, respectively. Also, abdominal adiposity was very severe in female subjects of 50s. The mean biochemical measurements of male and female were as follows: systolic and diastolic blood pressure 136.9, 83.8 mmHg and 133.6, 82.5 mmHg; hemoglobin (Hb) 14.3 and 13.0 g/dL; hematocrit (Ht) 44.7 and 39.8%; blood albumin 4.15 and 4.04 g/dL; total-cholesterol 170.0 and 183.1 mg/dL; HDL-cholesterol 43.6 and 42.7 mg/dL; fasting blood glucose 96.7 and 93.0 mg/dL, respectively. Also, the prevalence of biochemically abnormal subjects according to each cut-off point of biochemical measurements were analyzed. The results for male and female were; hypertension 58.0% and 47.2%; iron deficient anemia 19.3% and 20.6% by Hb, 7.2% and 11.9% by Ht; hypoalbuminemia 9.8% and 11.7%; diabetes 12.0% and 10.2%; hypercholesterolemia 19.5% and 30.5%, respectively. From those results we found that hypoalbuminemia, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia were prevalent, and obesity in females of 50s, iron-deficient anemia and diabetes in males of 70 years and over were significant health problems in this area. Therefore, it seems to be necessary to examine their health status periodically and provide the appropriate health and nutrition education program, which includes low sodium intake, balanced diet, exercise and weight control, to prevent the occurrence of chronic diseases.
