This paper deals with gait assisting rehabilitation robot which helps SCI patient walk again. We propose new concept of orthotic for robot considering motions of Hip and Knee Joints, and how to fit the robot to a user in terms of weight balance and comfortable standing. Then we describe our first engineering sample being designed based on the passive orthotic and show how to make the robot work for SCI patient in basic operation.
Control of a biped robot which has compliant ankle joints is dealt in this paper. Simulated version of a human ankle joint is built using springs and mechanical constraints, which gives a flexibility of joint and compliance against the touching ground. The biped robot with compliant ankle joints proposed here gives a good contact between its sole and the ground and makes foot landing soft. As a result, installing force sensors for measuring the center of gravity of the biped becomes easier. A motor to drive an ankle joint is not needed which makes legs light. However, the control problem becomes more difficult because the torque of the ankle joint to put the biped in a desired walking gait cannot be provided from the compliant ankle joint. To solve this problem, we proposed a dynamic gait modification method by adjusting the position of a hip joint. Simulation results for the mathematical model of the SD-2 biped in the Ohio State University are given to show the validity of the proposed controller.
This paper deals with the human-interactive actions of a quadruped robot by using Genetic Algorithm. In case we have to work out the designed plan under the special environments, our robot will be required to have walking capability, and patterns with legs, which are designed like gaits of insect, dog and human. Our quadruped robot (called SERO) is capable of not only the basic actions operated with sensors and actuators but also the various advanced actions including walking trajectories, which are generated by Genetic Algorithm. In this paper, the body and the controller structures are proposed and kinematics analysis are performed. All of the suggested motions of SERO are generated by PC simulation and implemented in real environment successfully.
Intelligent walking modeling of humanoid robot using learning based neuro-fuzzy system is presented in this paper. Walking pattern, trajectory of the zero moment point (ZMP) in a humanoid robot is used as an important criterion for the balance of the walking robots but its complex dynamics makes robot control difficult. In addition, it is difficult to generate stable and natural walking motion for a robot. To handle these difficulties and explain empirical laws of the humanoid robot, we are modeling practical humanoid robot using neuro-fuzzy system based on the two types of natural motions which are walking trajectories on a t1at floor and on an ascent. Learning based neuro-fuzzy system employed has good learning capability and computational performance. The results from neuro-fuzzy system are compared with previous approach.
Using a relationship between step length and accelerometer output, step length can be estimated. In this paper, we propose a new step length estimation algorithm, which can be used both for the plane and the slope by compensating the slope angle. The slope angle is estimated using a barometer and the slope angle is compensated by observing how the slope affects the step length estimation. The proposed algorithm is verified using five adult man walking data, where the average length error is about 3% regardless of the slope.
This study treats the method for kinematic modeling of the biped walking robot, for synthesizing various gait trajectories, and for calculating adequate values of the joint torque inside the stable region. To synthesize various and anthropomorphic walking easily, the gait trajectory is specified by a set of ten walking prameters, and the trunk motion equation is derived by the zero moment point and the gait trajectory. By distributing ground reaction force and moment reduced at the zero moment point to the both feet, the joint torque equation can be derived readily, and according to this equation, the joint torque to stable walking can be computed.
This paper deals with a workspace analysis of multi-legged walking robots in velocity domain(velocity workspace analysis). Noting that when robots are holding the same object in multiple cooperating robotic arm system the kinematic structure of the system is basically the same with that of a multi-legged walking robot standing on the ground, we invented a way ot applying the technique for multiple arm system to multi-legged walking robot. An important definition of reaction velocity is made and the bounds of velocities achievable by the moving body with multi-legs is derived from the given bounds on the capabilities of actuators of each legs through Jacobian matrix for given robot configuration. After some assumption of hard-foot-condition is adopted as a contact model between feet of robot and the ground, visualization process for the velocity workspace is proposed. Also, a series of application examples will be presented including continuous walking gaits as well as several different stationary posture of legged walking robots, which validate the usefulness of the proposed technique.
A biped walking robot which is developed as a platform for researching walking algorithm is briefly introduced. The developed walking robot has 6 degrees of freedom per one leg. The origins of the last three axis do not intersect at a point, so the kinematic analysis is cubmersome with the conventional method. In the former version of the robot, Jacobian-based inverse kinematics method is used. However, the Jacobian-based inverse kinematics method has drawbacks for the application in which knee is fully extended such as stair-case walking. The reason far that is the Jacobian becomes ill-conditioned near the singular points and the method is not able to give adequate solutions. So, a method for giving a closed-form inverse kinematics solution is proposed. The proposed method is based on careful consideration of the kinematic structure of the biped walking robot.
In this paper, a detection method of a pedestrian safety road marking was proposed. The proposed algorithm uses laser range and reflectivity of a range finder (LRF). For a detection of crosswalk marking and stop line, the DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) of reflectivity and cross-correlation method between the reference replica and the measured reflectivity are used. A speed bump is detected through measuring an altitude difference of two LRFs which have the different tilted angle. Furthermore, we proposed a velocity constrained a detection method of a speed bump. Finally, the proposed methods are tested in on-line, on the pavement of a road. The considered road markings are wholly detected. The localization errors of both road markings are smaller than 0.4 meter.
In this paper, a closed-loop observer to extract the center of mass (CoM) of a bipedal robot is suggested. Comparing with the simple conversion method of just using joint angle measurements, it enables to get more reliable estimates by fusing both joint angle measurements and F/T sensor outputs at ankle joints. First, a nonlinear-type observer is constructed to estimate the flexible rotational motion of the biped in the extended Kalman filter framework. It adopts the flexible inverted pendulum model which is appropriate to address the flexible motion of bipeds, specifically in the single support phase. The predicted estimates of CoM in terms of the flexible motion observer are combined with measurements (that is, output of the CoM conversion equation with joint angles). Then, we have final CoM estimates depending on the weighting values which penalize the flexible motion model and the CoM conversion equation. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
