  • As the link between traffic accidents and social and economic losses has been confirmed, there is a growing interest in developing safety policies based on crash data and a need for countermeasures to reduce severe crash outcomes such as severe injuries and fatalities. In this study, we select Daejeon city where the relative proportion of fatal crashes is high, as a case study region and focus on the severity of pedestrian crashes. After a series of data manipulation process, we run machine learning algorithms for the optimal model selection and variable identification. Of nine algorithms applied, AdaBoost and Random Forest (ensemble based ones) outperform others in terms of performance metrics. Based on the results, we identify major influential factors (i.e., the age of pedestrian as 70s or 20s, pedestrian crossing) on pedestrian crashes in Daejeon, and suggest them as measures for reducing severe outcomes.

  • For the performance experiments of databases systems with moving object databases, we need moving object trajectory data sets. For example, benchmark data sets of moving object trajectories are required for experiments on query processing of moving object databases. For those reasons, several tools have been developed for generating moving objects in Euclidean spaces or road network spaces. Indoor space differs from outdoor spaces in many aspects and moving object generator for indoor space should reflect these differences. Even some tools were developed to produce virtual moving object trajectories in indoor space, the movements generated by them are not realistic. In this paper, we present a moving object generation tool for indoor space. First, this tool generates trajectories for pedestrians in an indoor space. And it provides a parametric generation of trajectories considering not only speed, number of pedestrians, minimum distance between pedestrians but also type of spaces, time constraints, and type of pedestrians. We try to reflect the patterns of pedestrians in indoor space as realistic as possible. For the reason of interoperability, several geospatial standards are used in the development of the tool.

  • Human has various types of emotions which affect speculation, judgement, activity, and the like at the moment. Specifically, walking is also affected by emotions, because one's emotion status can be easily inferred by his or her walking style. The present research on biped walking with humanoid robots is mainly focused on stable walking irrespective of ground condition. For effective human-robot interaction, however, walking pattern needs to be changed depending on the emotion status of the robot. This paper provides analysis and comparison of gait experiment data for the men and women in four representative emotion states, i.e., joy, sorrow, ease, and anger, which was acquired by a gait analysis system. The data and analysis results provided in this paper will be referenced to emotional biped walking of a humanoid robot.

  • Walking is the most basic personal mobility and its importance and concern is ever increasing with the highlighting of a new paradigm, such as transit oriented development, sustainable development and revitalization of green transport. The existing analytical research on pedestrian network is using a pedestrian's moving distance to a destination and integration in space syntax theory as its representative accessibility factors. However, the uniplanar network moving distance fails to reflect topographic characteristics, so the moving distance could show a similar result value in case of the regions for analysis that have a similar network structure to each other. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to suggest a new analytical methodology on pedestrian network accessibility in consideration of the grade in pedestrian sections and a pedestrian's size. this study, in its analysis of a uniplanar pedestrian network moving distance, analyzed the pedestrian network moving distance in consideration of the grade in pedestrian sections, and even the pedestrian network moving distance in consideration of a pedestrian's size, and suggested the methodology on pedestrian network accessibility analysis in consideration of a more substantive pedestrian's characteristics. It is hoped that the methodology used by this study will be used as the methodology on pedestrian network analysis which can reflect topographic characteristics in the pedestrian network analysis, and take a more substantive pedestrian's movement into account.

  • Transportation system improved with rapid economic growth has helped human being a lot. However, the system has been also created social problems. The fast increasing auto ownership has not only increased transportation accidents but decreased air quality rapidly. One of the serious problems in transportation is that transportation policies have disregarded human factor, especially pedestrian environment. This research has developed microscopic pedestrian simulation with Netlogo. Netlogo is a very useful program for simulating complex systems such as pedestrian movements. The simulated pedestrian movements has been compared with actual surveyed pedestrian movements on a sidewalk. The comparison has been showed that the simulation program can be used for analyzing various pedestrian environments. Also, the impacts of bollard on the sidewalks have been analyed with the simulation program.

  • This paper introduces 'EgresSIM', which is microscopic evacuation simulation software. EgresSIM developed in this paper is a three-dimensional (3D) pedestrian evacuation simulator based on the improved model advanced from the floor field model(FFM), a microscopic pedestrian model. This software can simulate large size buildings that consist of a number of floors, stairs, rooms, and exit doors. Moreover, this software can arrange several hundreds or thousands of pedestrians in indoor space and check their movements through the 3D viewer in real time, as well as produce detailed results about evacuation situations such as which paths are employed by individual pedestrians, how long does it takes to evacuate, and how many evacuees are gathered at each of the exit doors. Building data needed in the simulation are constructed as XML files according to pre-defined indoor data models and information of simulation results is also created as XML log files. A moving pattern of pedestrians can be represented in many ways by adjusting the sensitivity parameters of two walk models supported by EgresSIM. Thus, evacuation simulation can be done based on many assumptions of situations such as movement to the nearest exit door or blackout after outage.

  • We propose a wearable system to help the visually impaired persons for walking safely to destination. If a user selects a destination, the system guides the user to destination with position data from GPS receiver and shortest path algorithm. At the same time, after acquiring complex spatial structures in front of the user with ultrasonic sensors, we categorize them into several predefined patterns, and determine an avoidance direction by estimating the patterns. As a result, visually impaired persons can arrive at destination safely and correctly without others help.

  • This paper suggests the evaluation method of gait analysis in measurements obtained using the "Foot Scanner" and "Foot Analyzer" system. Previous examination method with the unaided eye on the sole of the foot and analysis method of pressure distribution in gait have been discussed by many researchers. Also they have concerned with pressure curve, COP(center of pressure) trace, and velocity in COP. However experiment results depend on test environment and conditions of subjects. Consequently we need to regard the special energy parameter for solving the problem. The kinetic energy and impulse parameter can be used as parameters of gait analysis. The results of this study confirmed the validity of presented of the parameters through the experiment with eight subjects.

  • The use of multi-spectral cameras is essential for day and night pedestrian detection. In this paper, a color camera and a thermal imaging infrared camera were used to detect pedestrians near a crosswalk for 24 hours at an intersection with a high risk of traffic accidents. For pedestrian detection, the YOLOv5 object detector was used, and the detection performance was improved by using color images and thermal images at the same time. The proposed system showed a high performance of 0.940 mAP in the day/night multi-spectral (color and thermal image) pedestrian dataset obtained from the actual crosswalk site.
