  • This study analyzed contributing factors affecting leg injury severity in pedestrian-vehicle crashes. A Binary Logistic Regression (BLR) method was used to identify the factors. Independent variables include characteristics for pedestrian, vehicle, road, and environmental conditions. The leg injury severity is classified into two classes, which are dependent variables in this study, such as 'severe' and 'minor' injuries. Pedestrian age, collision speed, and the height of vehicle were identified as significant factors for the leg injury. The probabilistic outcome of predicting leg injury severity can be effectively used in not only deriving pedestrian-related safety policies but also developing advanced vehicular technologies for pedestrian protection.

  • The mortality rate of car-pedestrian accidents is quite high compared to the frequency of accident. Recently, governments and insurance companies tend to establish and implement new safety standards for pedestrian protection such as EURO-NCAP and K-NCAP. The performance for the pedestrian protection has been gradually improved, but it is still insufficient. Therefore, various studies for the pedestrian protection are being carried out. The car-pedestrian accident is simulated in order to study to the upper legform test of the EURO-NCAP protocol. A pedestrian dummy model is employed and the results are discussed.

  • This study proposes a methodology to assess the traffic safety benefits of technical regulation for pedestrian leg. Traffic safety benefit is defined as the injury reduction in this study. Actual accident analysis and simulation experiments using LS-Dyna3d are conducted to establish statistical models for developing the methodology. The relationship between collision speed and parameters of the regulation is explored. An application example of the proposed methodology is also presented for more comprehensive understanding. It is believed that the proposed methodology would be greatly utilized in developing various technologies and policies to protect pedestrian.

  • In this paper, we proposed the method detecting multiple pedestrians using motion information and SVM(Support Vector Machine) from a moving camera image. First, we detect moving pedestrians from both the difference image and the projection histogram which is compensated for the camera ego-motion using corresponding feature sets. The difference image is simple method but it is not detected motionless pedestrians. Thus, to fix up this problem, we detect motionless pedestrians using SVM The SVM works well particularly in binary classification problem such as pedestrian detection. However, it is not detected in case that the pedestrians are adjacent or they move arms and legs excessively in the image. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed the method detecting motionless and adjacent pedestrians as well as people who take excessive action in the image using motion information and SVM The experimental results on our various test video sequences demonstrated the high efficiency of our approach as it had shown an average detection ratio of 94% and False Positive of 2.8%.

  • Recently, pedestrian protection related research topics have been actively studied by automotive designers and engineers due to the enhanced pedestrian protecting regulations. It is required to design an energy absorbing structure, such as crumple zone that can sufficiently absorb the impact energy to reduce the leg injury when accident happens. The structure is designed by reducing the height of front end module, considering the mounting location, and investigating impact characteristics. In this paper, the concept of the crumple zone was introduced and the role of the crumple zone was investigated by analyzing the performance of upper legform impact to a bonnet leading edge test, and the design process was suggested.

  • In this paper, we propose a new parallel mechanism for the legs of biped robots and the control of the robot's locomotion. A leg consists of two 3-DOF parallel platforms linked serially: one is an orientation platform for a thigh and the other is the 3-DOF asymmetric parallel platform for the shank. The desired locomotion trajectory is generated on the basis of the Gravity-Compensated Inverted Pendulum Mode (GCIPM) in the sagittal direction and the Linear Inverted Pendulum Mode (LIPM) in the lateral direction, respectively. In order to simulate the ground reaction force, a 6-DOF elastic pad model is used underneath each of the soles. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed parallel mechanism and locomotion control are shown by the results of computer simulations of a 12-DOF parallel biped robot using $SimMechanics^{(R)}$.

  • Since hundreds thousands of pedestrians are killed or injured in car accidents every year, a variety of research efforts have been performed to protect pedestrians in pedestrian-vehicle crashes. The IHRA reports that injuries on the child head, the adult head, and the adult lower leg/knee are the most critical in the crashes. Identifying the current status of international activities on pedestrian protection, this study, in particular, carries out headform impact test using selected domestic vehicles categorized by three groups - Sedan, SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle), and 1 Box (One Box) Vehicle. According to the valuable findings from the test results, this paper proposes a methodology under which the Korean Technical Regulation for protecting pedestrians in pedestrian-vehicle crashes will be developed.

  • The pronation foot can increase muscle activity, and may result in muscle fatigue and overuse syndromes. This paper aims to examine the relationships between muscle fatigue indices and pronation angles (PRA) larger than 20° for pronated foot subjects. Twelve subjects in the 15-61 age range were participated, and EMG of their biceps femoris were measured during treadmill walking at 4.5 km/h for 30 seconds. Slopes of the median frequency and the magnitude in the low frequency band were estimated respectively as muscle fatigue indices (MFIs). We hypothesized that the relationships between MFIs and PRA for the subjects in this paper be similar to those for normal ones. The test results demonstrated that we could obtain the significant correlation coefficients between MFIs and PRA (r>0.60; p<0.05).
