Communicating Conservation to the General Public:Conservation Gallery Exhibition at the Wallace Collection, London, UK (영국 월레스 컬렉션의 상설 보존 전시관 운영을 통해 본 보존과 일반 대중과의 교류)

  • The Wallace Collection in London (one of the national museums in the UK) has a gallery dedicated to conservation related displays. As well as permanent displays on the manufacturing techniques and materials of artifacts, there is a specially designed space for temporary conservation exhibitions. Through the example of the current conservation exhibition at the Wallace Collection and similar exhibitions and displays from other museums in the UK, this paper will study how the relationship and communication between the conservation profession and the general public have changed, from conservation as a behind-the-scenes and little-known activity to a closer interaction with the public and as a direct educational tool. The general function of a museum can be seen to have evolved from providing passive information to its visitors to offering more active and various forms of education. Conservation has developed with this change towards more awareness of the profession and its role in the preservation of cultural heritage through public outreach programs and displays.

  • The Fine Art Department has sent a list of ceramic ware to the Conservation Science Laboratory of the National Museum of Korea for conservation treatment. The listed ceramic ware will be newly displayed in the ceramic ware gallery of Yongsan Museum after it is opened. Based on the list, Conservation Science Laboratory has been taking special measures to conservation the ceramic ware since 2002. This paper attempts to introduce the process of restoring the Blue-and-white porcelain Jar with phoenix Design (Jubsoo 631) and Celadon peahen-shaped water dropper (Duksoo 5202).

Report on the Conservation Treatment for the Artifacts Exhibited in the newly-opened Kimhae National Museum (국립김해박물관(國立金海博物館) 개관(開館) 전시유물 보존처리 보고(報告))

  • More than 200 objects selected for the newly-opened Kimhae National Museum were treated for conservation. The objects which represent ancient Kaya culture, were mainly composed of metallic such as gilt bronze, silver, copper alloy and iron. The corrosion products on gilt bronze and copper alloy objects were preserved or removed according to their stability. Minimum treatment was done for preserving the original state of the objects. For silver objects and iron objects with silver-plate decorations, silver surfaces were revealed after treatment of corrosion products and treatments to prevent corrosion of silver and iron were done emphatically. For iron objects, which were stabilized, the original shape of objects was restored and acrylic coating was applied to prevent further corrosion. For the objects which were being corroded, 2-step de-chloride treatments were undertaken. The first step was immersing the objects in a solution of 0.3M sodium hydroxide and the second was the pressure de-chloride treatment using borax-distilled water. The main purpose of those treatments was to get rid of the causes of corrosion. Besides, conservation treatments for potteries, making of special mounting board for exhibition and amendment of various modeling were done too.

Conservation of Chungmugong's Artifacts (보물 제326호 이충무공유물의 과학적 보존)

  • Yi Sunsin's artifacts had been exhibited at Hyeonchungsa in Asan-si, Chungchungnam-do. These artifacts include Janggeom(Long swords), Okno(Jade ornament of Korea traditional hat), Yodae(Waist belt) and Dobae(Peach shaped wine cups) Gudae(Yodae's saucers). These were covered with dust and corroded due to long term display. Condition of these artifacts was examined for a re-opening of Yi Chungmugong Memorial Pavilion on 28 March 2011. Before conservation treatment of the artifacts, scientific analysis was conducted to identify the material of the artifacts. The result showed that the red paint on the hilt of the sword is composed of two layers. Pigments of two layers were found to be hematite and cinnabar mixed with red lead respectively. Mixed layer was assumed to have been applied recently. Also it was found that the blade of the sword was repainted using chrome yellow($PbCrO_4$). Considering the time limit, conservation treatment focused on stabilization of damaged area and prevention of futher risk during display.

  • For exhibition, conducted conservation treatment for a variety of collections acquired at home and abroad such as metallic objects, wooden-ware, paintings and lacquer-ware. Conservation treatment methods for 42 metallic objects were introduced for material types. X-ray and microscopic method were used to identify the current state of the collections and in some case if necessary, various foreign particle removing and stabilization method were used depending on material type. Historical data were stored and exhibited to public.

Use of Visible Storage for Display and Conservation Treatment of a Large-sized Jar Coffin (대형 옹관의 보존처리 과정과 이를 활용한 개방형 수장고의 운용)

  • This paper describes the restoration and display of a large jar coffin at the Naju National Museum. Excavated from Tomb No. 3 at Bokam-ri, Naju, the large jar is 194 cm in height and its rim diameter is 108 cm. The jar had been broken into approximately forty fragments prior to its restoration, and a supporting structure was installed to ensure the safety of the relic during the restoration process. The restoration was conducted inside a visible storage for large jar coffins for approximately three weeks from February 5 to February 27, 2018. Over two weeks during this period, the restoration efforts inside the storage were visible to the public in the permanent exhibition space so that visitors could observe the process in person. This was planned to help visitors understand and arouse their interest in large-sized relics such as jar coffins and the restoration process. This study also investigates the practices of overseas institutions in order to suggest plans for raising public awareness of conservation treatment at conservation science centers.

  • The Stone Lamp from Hyeon Hwa Temple is an important piece of buddhist art from the Koryo Dynasty (initiated by King Hyun-Joung). It provides an insight into stone-art techniques employed during the Koryo Dynasty, and serves as an authentic example of work from that period, which had both a refined style and artistic integrity. However, the stone lamp was dismantled and has been stored at the National Museum of Korea since 1986. This was because it was severely damaged, as a result of exposure to an outdoors environment. This article discusses the conservation of the stone lamp, which was carried out by conservators at the National Museum of Korea. It was prepared for a new display of the lamp to the public. The conservation process can be briefly described as follows: Cleaning (this includes the removal of previous repairs that were made), the re-attachment of the object's original fragments, and the gap-filling of missing parts. After its conservation, the object is in a much better condition and ready to be displayed once more. What is more important, in terms of the long term preservation of the stone lamp, is that the condition of the stone lamp needs to be continuously monitored, and appropriate conservation actions should be taken as necessary.

Conservation Treatment and Analysis of the Paint of a C-46 Transport (근현대 대형유물 C-46 수송기의 도료분석 및 보존처리)

  • A C-46 transport aircraft, which can be thought of as a large cultural heritage item from the modern period, was subjected to paint analysis and conservation treatment in preparation for its exhibition. The C-46 is the first aircraft ever dispatched to overseas combat zones by the Korean Air Force and carried out missions during the Vietnam War. The aircraft is mainly made of aluminum and shows signs of corrosion on its surface, including pitting and etching, as well as gray and white powdery attachments. In the analysis of the paint, diatomite(SiO2·nH2O) was confirmed in the red paint, titanium dioxide(TiO2) was identified in the white paint, black iron oxide(Fe3O4) was detected in the black paint, and colcothar(Fe3O4) mixed with putty was confirmed in the blue paint. Infrared spectroscopy revealed the use of alkyd resin in the paint on the main body and nitrocellulose in the Taegeuk pattern. During the conservation treatment, mechanical cleaning, such as sanding, was conducted to remove paint and varnish from the surface. Corrosion was removed by sanding and cleaning with chemical solvents, and new paints and varnishes were applied. Through the paint analysis and conservation treatment, the aircraft was made available for exhibition in a stable condition.
