Study on the Flow Around an Elliptic Wing Using Flow Visualization Technique (유동가시화를 통한 타원형날개주위 유동연구)

  • This study deals with an investigation on the tip vortex generated by an elliptic wing with section shapes of NACA 0020. The flow structure on the wing surface is investigated by using tufts test as well as observing the cavitation pattern. The surface pressure on a foil surface is measured to complement the visualized flow field. Results show that a strong spanwise pressure gradient is a definite contributor on the formation of tip vorex, and the fluids from both sides contribute to the evolutionary process of tip vortex. On the other hand, a series of experiments are conducted to investigate the detailed structure of tip-vortex at various angles of attack. The tip-vortex formation and development are observed by producing a cavitation, and then by a laser sheet technique in conduction with a dye injection method. The shape of tip-vortex and the distance between a vortex core and the trailing vortex sheet are found to vary with the angle of attack. Overall features of tip flow are evaluated to complement the vortex model based on inviscid theory.

Study on the Three Dimensional Flow Characteristics of the Propeller Wake Using PIV Techniques (PIV 기법을 이용한 프로펠러 후류의 3차원 유동 특성 연구)

  • A stereo-PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique is used to investigate the vortical structure of the wake behind a rotating propeller in the present study. A four bladed propeller is tested in a cavitaion tunnel without any wake screen. Hundreds of instantaneous velocity fields are phase-averaged to reveal the three dimensional spatial evolution of the flow behind the propeller. The results of conventional 2-D PIV are also compared with those of the stereo-PIV to understand the vortical structure of propeller wake deeply. The variations of radial and axial velocities in the 2-D PIV results seem to be affected by the out-of-plane motion. generating a little perspective error in the in-plane velocity components of the slipstream. The strong out-of-plane motion around the hub vortex also causes the perspective error to vary the axial velocity component a little at the near wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component had the maximum value of about 0.3U0 in the tip vortices and continued its magnitude in the wake region.

PIV Aanalysis of Vortical Flow behind a Rotating Propeller in a Cavitation Tunnel (캐비테이션 터널에서 PIV를 이용한 프로펠러 후류 보오텍스 유동계측 및 거동해석)

  • A two-frame PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique is used to investigate the wake characteristics behind a marine propeller with 4 blades at high Reynolds number. For each of 9 different blade phases from $ 0^{\circ} $ to $ 80^{\circ} $, one hundred and fifty instantaneous velocity fields are measured. They are ensemble averaged to study the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the region ranging from the trailing edge to one propeller diameter (D) downstream location. The phase-averaged mean velocity shows that the trailing vorticity is related to radial velocity jump, and the viscous wake is affected by boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces and centrifugal force. Both Galilean decomposition method and vortex identification method using swirling strength calculation are very useful for the study of vortex behaviors En the propeller wake legion. The slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region up to about X/D : 0.53 downstream. Thereafter, unstable oscillation occurs because of the reduction of interaction between the tip vortex and the wake sheet behind the maximum contraction point.

  • Recently, contra-rotating propellers (CRP) having higher efficiency draw much attention since the EEDI regulation of IMO has been enforced. In this paper a numerical method based on the vortex lattice potential theory with a wake model and an experimental procedure with a newly built measuring device, specifically focusing on CRPs, are introduced. And they are applied to a series of CRP known to be designed for the purpose of improving EEDI. The numerical and experimental results showed good agreement explaining the characteristics of the CRP properly. The proposed method is believed to be effectively used for various CRP related studies.

  • The flow characteristics around KRISO 3600TEU container ship model have been experimentally investigated in a circulating water channel. The instantaneous velocity vectors were measured using 2-frame PIV measurement system. The mean velocity fields and turbulent statistics including turbulent kinetic energy and vorticity were obtained by ensemble-averaging 400 instantaneous velocity fields. The free stream velocity was fixed at 0.6m/s and the corresponding Reynolds number was $9{\times}10^5$. The test sections were divided into two regions, three transverse sections of the wake region(Station -0.5767, -1, -3) and five longitudinal sections of the wake((Z/(B/2)=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6). In the wake region, large-scale longitudinal vortices of nearly same strength are symmetric with respect to the wake centerline and a relatively weak secondary vortex is formed near the waterline. With going downstream, the strength of longitudinal vortex is decreased and the wake region expands.

  • The hydrodynamic lift and moment acting on the bodies of revolution with pointed-end were calculated by the surface discrete vortex method. It was found, by direct computation, that the lift normal to the on-coming flow can be generated by introducing the shed-vortex to the unless otherwise purely potential model. The value of the destabilizing moment, which is called Munk moment, is reduced by the shed-vortex model, resulting in better agreement with the existing experimental values.

A Numerical Solution Method of the Boundary Integral Equation -Axisymmetric Flow- (경계적분방정식의 수치해법 -축대칭 유동-)

  • A numerical solution method of the boundary integral equation for axisymmetric potential flows is presented. Those are represented by ring source and ring vorticity distribution. Strengths of ring source and ring vorticity are approximated by linear functions of a parameter $\zeta$ on a segment. The geometry of the body is represented by a cubic B-spline. Limiting integral expressions as the field point tends to the surface having ring source and ring vorticity distribution are derived upto the order of ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$. In numerical calculations, the principal value integrals over the adjacent segments cancel each other exactly. Thus the singular part proportional to $\(\frac{1}{\zeta}\)$ can be subtracted off in the calculation of the induced velocity by singularities. And the terms proportional to $ln{\zeta}$ and ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$ can be integrated analytically. Thus those are subtracted off in the numerical calculations and the numerical value obtained from the analytic integrations for $ln{\zeta}$ and ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$ are added to the induced velocity. The four point Gaussian Quadrature formula was used to evaluate the higher order terms than ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$ in the integration over the adjacent segments to the field points and the integral over the segments off the field points. The root mean square errors, $E_2$, are examined as a function of the number of nodes to determine convergence rates. The convergence rate of this method approaches 2.
