The Contamination Level of Lens Cases by Various Wearing and Storage Periods of Soft Contact Lens and the Actual Condition of Lens Cases Care (소프트 콘택트렌즈 착용 기간과 보관 기간에 따른 보관 용기의 오염도 및 보관 용기 관리 실태)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the actual condition of caring soft contact lens cases and the change in contamination level of lens cases by wearing and storage period of soft contact lens. Methods: The actual condition of caring soft lens cases was surveyed with sixty-three of contact lens wearers. Soft contact lenses were worn for 1, 3, 7 and 14 days, and the lenses were separately stored in 12 lens cases for 1, 3 and 7 days. The contamination level of lens cases was determined by counting the numbers of microorganisms, gram negative bacteria and fungi. Results: Only 14% of survey answerers cleaned their lens cases with a brush, rinsed and dried them upside down before next usage of lens case when those lenses were kept for a long time. Furthermore, 54% of total answerers just kept soft contact lens in the case without changing the multipurpose solution. Microorganisms, gram negative bacteria and fungi were detected in lens cases even when soft contact lens were kept for 1 day in the lens case after wearing for 1 day and cleaning it with multipurpose solution. The numbers of microorganisms, gram negative bacteria and fungi in lens cases increased with storage periods of soft contact lens, and also contamination level of lens cases was increased in accordance with wearing period of lens. In the lens cases without changing multipurpose solution, the numbers of microorganisms, gram negative bacteria and fungi increased with storage period of lens with statistical significance. Conclusions: This study showed that lens wearers' concerns on caring contact lens case were not satisfactory. As the result, the contamination of lens cases was related to increase of lens wearing and storage periods suggesting that the proper instruction and education for lens wearers are required.

Effects of Storage Temperature and Time on Hatchability of Ross Broiler Breeder Eggs (로스 육계 종란의 보관온도와 기간이 부화율에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of storage temperature and time on hatch-ability of the commercial Ross broiler breeder eggs. In Trial 1,720 eggs collected in the morning were allotted to four storage time treatments (3, 5, 7 and 9 days), with three replicates per treatment. The storage temperature was fixed at $4^{\circ}C$. In Trials 2 and 3, similar protocol was used as in Trial 1 except that the storage temperature was fixed at $17^{\circ}C$ and $28^{\circ}C$respectively. In Trial 1, hatchability was significantly (P<0.05) reduced when the eggs were stored more than 3 days. In Trial 2, no significant difference was found among all treatments, indicating that, at 17$^{\circ}C$ storage temperature, the eggs could be stored up to 9 days without reducing hatchability. In Trial 3, however, hatchability of eggs stored for 9 days was significantly reduced compared to the other treatments. In conclusion, we found out that optimum hatchability can be achieved with a storage temperature of $17^{\circ}C$ for Ross broiler eggs stored for up to 9 days.

Influence of the Difference in Temperature and Duration of Storage on the Rejection of Cryopreserved Rat Tracheal Homograft (쥐기관 동종이식편에 있어서 냉동보관 온도 및 기간이 거부 반응에 미치는 영향)

  • 배경: 기관의 동종이식편은 초냉동보관으로 생육성을 유지할 수 있으며 항원성이 줄어든다고 알려졌으나 냉동보관 온도 및 기간에 따른 항원성의 변화는 아직까지 명확히 밝혀져 있지 않다. 따라서 이번 연구에서는 냉동보관 온도의 차이 및 기간이 쥐 기관 동종이식편의 거부반응에 미치는 영향을 연구하였다. 대상 및 방법: 24개의 쥐 기관을 적출하여 12개씩 -8$0^{\circ}C$ 냉동고 및 -196$^{\circ}C$ 질소탱크에 각각 1, 3, 6개월씩 보관하였다. 냉동보관한 기관을 반으로 나누어 48마리의 쥐복강에 대망으로 감싼 다음 이식하였다. 1, 3, 5군은 -8$0^{\circ}C$ 냉동고에 각각 1, 3, 6개월씩 보관한 기관 동종이식편을 이식하였고 2, 4, 6군은 -196$^{\circ}C$ 질소탱크에 각각 1, 3, 6개월씩 보관한 기관 동종이식편을 이식하였다. 7군은 대조군으로 냉동보관하지 않은 동종이식편을 이식하였다. 이식후 14일째 이식된 동종이식편을 적출하여 간질조직의 단세포 침윤정도 및 내강 폐쇄 정도를 관찰하여 거부반응을 정도를 측정하였다. 결과: 7개 군 모두에서 중등도 이상의 심한 단세포 침윤을 보였으며 각군간의 통계학적인 차이를 보이지 않았다. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6군에서 7군에서 보다 내강 폐쇄 정도가 적었으나 통계학적인 의의는 없었다. 모든 군에서 연골주위 단세포 침윤이 심한 경우에도 연골세포는 비교적 생육성을 잘 유지하고 있었다. 결론: 냉동보관 온도 및 보관 기간의 차이에 따른 동종이식편의 거부반응의 차이는 없었으며 모든 군에서 심한 거부반응을 보였다. 따라서 냉동 보관 쥐 동종이식편을 이용한 실험에서는 적절한 면역억제제의 사용이 필수적이라고 생각된다.

Effect of Storage Media and Duration on Pulpal Cell Viability in Exfoliated Deciduous Teeth (탈락 유치 내 치수 세포의 보관 용액과 기간에 따른 생존)

  • If it is possible to preserve and culture cells from exfoliated deciduous teeth in a readily available storage medium within each family, more stem cells would be obtained. This research is about the effect of storage media and time on pulpal cell viability of exfoliated deciduous teeth. 330 exfoliated deciduous teeth were randomly divided into 11 groups; fresh group, dry group, groups stored in cell culture medium (2, 4, 7 days each), in milk (2, 4, 7 days each), and in saline (2, 4, 7 days each). Primary culture of pulpal cells was conducted in each group and the success rates were compared by calculating the number of teeth with viable cells. The result of primary culture shows that the success rate decreases as the time of storage gets longer. There was no statistical difference between groups stored in the cell culture medium, milk, and saline for 2 and 4 days. However, the groups stored in milk and saline for 7 days showed dramatic decrease in success rate compared to the group stored in the cell culture medium. In conclusion, exfoliated or extracted deciduous teeth can be used to culture pulpal cells when they are stored in milk and saline for a certain period of time; however obtaining viable pulpal cells becomes harder as the storage time gets longer.

  • This study was performed to evaluate effects of different holding temperatures and storing periods during the pre-incubation period on egg hatchability of hens egg in broiler breeders. For the treatments 1(T1)~7(T7), which were stored fur 1(T1) to 7 days(T7) before egg incubation, respectively. There were three replicates per treatment and forty eggs per replicate. This study was performed twice, which were 40(Summer) and 50 weeks of age(Autumn) in broiler breeders. Storing ambient temperature of egg, egg weight, at 0 and 18 days during incubation, fertility, hatchability and embryo mortality were examined. Average hatchability was rapidly decreased only in Summer. Although it was not significantly different in Autumn. This experiment was concluded that storing periods of hatchery egg was influenced hatchability, especially in high ambient temperature conditions(Summer, above $25^{\circ}C$ ). In conclusion, we found out that optimum hatchability can be achieved with a storage temperature of 13 ~$19^{\circ}C$ for broiler breeder eggs stored for up to 7 days.

지하수의 채취 및 전처리 방법에 따른 TOC 농도변화

  • TOC(total organic carbon)분석은 폐수 및 강수의 오염특성을 평가하기 위한 도구로서 BOD(biochemical oxygen demand), COD(chemical oxygen demand) 와 함께 사용되어 왔다. TOC 측정시간은 10분 정도로 BOD(5~6일), COD(2~3시간)에 비해 아주 짧은 시간에 측정할 수가 있으며, 전처리과정이 단순하고 정확도도 높은 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구는 지하수의 잠재오염성을 밝혀내기 위한 도구로 TOC를 활용하여 신뢰성 있는 분석 값을 얻기 위해서 시료의 채취, 보관, 측정까지의 최적 조건을 도출하는데 목적을 두었다. 아울러 시료 채취 후 일정 경과 시간에 따른 TOC의 변화를 관찰하였다. 시료채취 용기, 채취 후 산성화, 보관방법 및 기간에 대한 실험 결과, 대상 변수에 따라서 TOC의 농도변화에 커다란 차이점을 볼 수 있었다. TOC 농도가 낮은 지하수시료의 측정에서는 빛을 차단시킨 불투명 유리병을 사용해야만 하고 채취 즉시 산도를 높여(pH<2)주며 4$^{\circ}C$ 이하에서 보관하여야 한다. 지하수중 TOC 측정시료는 가능한 보관 기간에 있어서 채수 후 24시간 이내에 측정하는 것이 좋으나 1) 본 연구에서는 채취현장과의 거리를 고려하면 현실적으로 불가능하므로 기간에 따른 TOC 변화를 30일까지 측정, 조사하였다.

The Effects of Breed, Laying Age and Egg Storage Period on the Hatchability of Korean Native Chickens (한국토종닭의 품종, 산란 연령 및 종란의 보관 기간이 부화 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the effects of breed, laying age, and egg storage period on hatching performance. Eggs were collected from early laying period (27 to 29 weeks old) and late laying period (50 to 52 weeks old) in Hwanggalsaek Jaeraejong, Korean Rhode Island Red, and Korean White Leghorn chicken breeds. Eggs laid for each period were stored for 3, 7 and 14 days and then hatched. Fertility, hatchability, and embryonic mortality were observed to determine the hatching performance. The results showed that hatching performance was affected by breed, laying age, and egg storage period with independently or interactively. The Korean Rhode Island Red breed had the lowest hatching performance. Hatchability and early embryonic mortality rate increased in early laying period eggs compared to the late laying period, but the late embryonic mortality rate increased in late laying period eggs. Additionally, hatching performance decreased as the egg storage period increased. Using breed-specific hatching management techniques, avoiding late laying period eggs, and shortening the egg storage period to seven days after laying may improve the hatching performance.

A Effect on the Maintenance of Chicken Freshness through $\pi$-Water Treatment ($\pi$-Water 처리를 통한 닭고기의 신선도 유지 효과)

  • The present study attempted to obtain a basic data concerning the effect of $\pi$-water, a sort of physiological water, on the maintenance of chicken freshness. The meats were divided into three groups: the control, 20% - dilution, and 5% - dilution groups. In the experiment, the changes of the TBA-values of the meats started to appear on the 3rd day in the control group, and from the 4th day in the 20% - and 5% - dilution groups. The changes of pH didn't appear in the meats as the storage time passed. The number of general bacteria increased rapidly on the 3th day in the control, and on the 5th day in the 20% -, and 5% - dilution groups. As for the color, the meats turned greenish on the 5th day in the control, 7th, in 20% - dilution, and, l0th in the 5%-dilution groups. As for the order, the meats emitted the unpleasant order, such as that of ammonia, on the 3rd day in the control, 5th, in the 20% - dilution, and, 7th, in the 5ft-dilution group.

The Viability & Vascularization of the Cryopreserved Rat Tracheal Allografts with Omental Implantation (초냉동 보관된 백서의 동종 기관 이식편의 대망 내 이식에 따른 조직 생육성 및 혈관 형성)

  • Background: Using the neovascularizing properties of the omentum, we studied the viability and vascularity of the cryopreserved rat tracheal allografts with omental implantation. Material and Method: The cryopreserved tracheal allografts of eight-week old male Sprague Dawley rats were implanted into the omentum. The rats were divided into the four groups according to the duration of cryopreservation and of omental implantation. We examined the tracheal allografts histologically for viability of cartilages, inflammation and fibrosis of smooth muscle and connective tissue, and degree of vascularity. Result: The degree of inflammation in the smooth muscle and the connective tissue of the tracheal allografts was not statistically related to neither the duration of cryopreservation or of omental implantation. The tracheal cartilages of the tracheal allografts were found to be severely calcified in all cases. Significant difference in vascularity was found between the groups I and II (p < 0.05). And a sufficient vascularity in the intercartilaginous space was observed in the mid portion of the tracheal allografts as well as both ends. Conclusion: In conclusion, the omental implantation for 2 weeks could establish a sufficient vascularity in the intercartilaginous spaces for maintaining the viability of the tracheal allografts. This study might provide a possibility of the sequential tracheal allotransplantation after omental implantation.

Quality Characteristics of Sulgi with Added Fresh or Frozen Red Onions (보관방법을 달리한 자색양파 첨가 설기의 품질 특성 평가)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the quality characteristics of Sulgi (Korean steamed rice cakes) prepared with fresh or frozen red onions. Sulgi was prepared with different levels (10, 20 or 30%) of fresh or frozen onions and stored for 4 days. The L value significantly decreased with the addition of fresh red onions and the a value significantly increased with the addition of either fresh or frozen red onions. The pH value was also increased with the addition of fresh red onions. In terms of texture, the hardness of Sulgi with either fresh or frozen red onions was reduced. The gumminess and brittleness gradually decreased with the addition of fresh or frozen red onions. Sulgi composed of 30% red onions showed the best sensory results in terms of color, flavor, texture, taste, and overall acceptance.
