  • The internal or external restraint of thermal and dry shrinkage movements could thus generate tensile stresses in concrete pavement for early traffic opening. Restrained shrinkage and thermal stresses could produce microcracks in concrete which increase its permeability and accelerate its long-term deterioration under weathering and load effects. Fiber reinforced concrete is an effective approach to the control of microcrack and crack development under tensile stresses. This study aims at evaluation of the durability of high early strength concrete for early traffic opening and increase of service life. Three different types of regulated-set cement which recently has been used much in Korea were adopted. Fibers were added and their mixtures were compared with plain high early strength concrete mixture. The use of fibers increased durability performance of high early strength concrete using regulated-set cement than the corresponding plain mixtures.

  • In order to apply seismic isolators to the low-cost buildings, seismic isolators have to be low-cost and light. In this paper fiber reinforced strip form isolator in which the steel plates of conventional rubber bearing was replaced by fiber was proposed. The proposed fiber reinforced strip form isolator was designed, fabricated, cut and subjected to vertical test and harizontal test. Therefore fiber reinforced strip form isolator was to be shown valid in the view point of fabrication and application to desired size. The harizontal test and vertical test have shown that fiber reinforced strip form isolator could replace the rubber isolator. By these results, low-cost and light seismic isolator can be applied to the low-cost building. These fiber reinforced strip form isolator can be applied to the low-cost building.

  • Fiber reinforcement has been being widely used in concrete to enhance the mechanical properties and to reduce the micro-cracking caused by plastic and drying shrinkage. While researches has been focused on the benefits of fiber reinforcement, the properties of fiber reinforced concrete are strongly dependent on the type, shape and the amount of fibers in concrete. In this study, the resistance of nylon fiber reinforced concrete against the chloride ion penetration was experimentally observed by NT Build 492. The test results showed that the addition of nylon fiber has little effect on the change of the resistivity of concrete to the chloride ion penetration.

  • Recently, polypropylene fiber reinforced mortar and concrete as civil and architectural materials have been used in major countries in the world. Polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete has many advantages in terms of economical aspect, chemical stability and durability. It has been reported that polypropylene fiber can control restrained tensile stresses and cracks and increase toughness, resistance to impact, corrosion, fatigue and durability. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to investigate the strength as well as many mechanical characteristics including toughness and shrinkage control properties. A specially devjsed shrinkage test has been applied to measure the crack control characteristics of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete. The present study indicates that the polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete curbs greatly the crack occurrence due to shrinkage and enhances toughness resistance. The present study provides a firm base for the efficient use of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete in actual construction such as pavements and slab structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the material strength and tensile deformation behavior of highly ductile high-strength cement composites reinforced by synthetic fibers. Materials and mixture proportions were designed to make composites with a strength level of 80 MPa in compression. Two kinds of polyethylene fibers with different properties were employed as reinforcing fibers. A series of experiments on density, compressive strength, and deformation performance was performed. Experimental results showed that the tensile behavior and cracking patterns of cement composite strongly depends on the types of reinforcing fibers. It was also demonstrated that the cement composite with a compressive strength of 77.7 MPa and a tensile strain capacity of 7.9% can be manufactured by using a proper polyethylene fiber.

  • This study investigated the failure mechanism of RC beams strengthened with AFRP sheets. Total 5 half-scale RC beams were constructed and tested to estimate the effectiveness of various methods to prevent the debonding failure of AFRP sheets. From the experimental results, it was found that increasing bonded length or end U-wrappings does not prevent debonding failure. On the other hand, the beams with center U-wrappings and shear-keys reached the ultimate state with their sufficient performance. The center U-wrappings tended to control debonding of the longitudinal AFRP sheets because the growth of the longitudinal cracks along the edges of the composites was delayed. In case of shear-keys, it was sufficient to eliminate debonding and the beams failed by AFRP sheets rupture due to the sufficient bond mechanism.

  • The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is significantly growing in construction and infrastructure applications where durability under harsh environmental conditions is of great concern. In order to examine the applicability of FRP rebar as a reinforcement in flexural member, flexural tests were conducted. 12 beams with different FRP materials such as CFRP, GFRP and Hybrid FRP and reinforcement ratio were tested and analyzed in terms of failure mode, moment-deflection, flexural capacity, ductility index and sectional strain distribution. The test results were also compared with the theoretical model represented in ACI 440.1R06. Test results indicate that the flexural capacity of the beams reinforced by FRP bars can be accurately predicted using the ultimate design theory. They also show that the current ACI model for computing the deflection overestimates the actual deflection of GFRP series and underestimates the deflection of CFRP series.

  • Columns are one of the most critical parts of a structural system subjected to earthquake excitations. In this regard, extensive experimental studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapping on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. Among them, many studies focused on the behavior of circular or square RC columns strengthened with CFRP or GFRP sheets. Since the cross-sectional shape affects confinement by FRP wrapping, its strengthening effect and final damage pattern may differ with shapes. In this study, a series of cyclic tests was conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of rectangular reinforced concrete columns strengthened with basalt-based fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) sheets and composite fiber panels. The result shows that the effect of strengthening is not significant, and it implies a little increase of confinement by BFRP sheets and composite fiber panels, which is considered partly due to the cross-sectional shape of the columns.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of plain and steel fiber high strength concrete under uniaxial and biaxial loading condition. A number of plain and steel fiber high strength concrete cubes having 28 days compression strength of 82.7MPa(12,000 psi) were made and tested. Four principal compression stress ratios ($\sigma_2/\sigma_1$=0.00, 050, 0.75 and 1.00), and four fiber concentrations($V_f$ =0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and $1.5\%$) were selected as major test variables. From test results, it is shown that confinement stress in minor stress direction has pronounced effect on the strength and deformational behavior. Both of the stiffness and ultimate strength of the plain and fiber high strength concrete Increased. The maximum increase of ultimate strength occurred at biaxial stress ratio of 0.5($\sigma_2/\sigma_1=0.5$) in the plain high strength concrete and the value were recorded $30\%$ over than the strength under uniaxial condition. The failure modes of plain high strength concrete under uniaxial compression were shown as splitting type of failure but steel fiber concrete specimens under biaxial condition showed shear type failure. The values of elastic modulus were also examined higher than that from ACI and CEB expression under biaxial compression condition.
