  • Objective : Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly suffer from feeding disorders. Major feeding problems include mealtime behavior problems, picky eating, and a lack of food variety can lead to nutritional problems, developmental and social limitations, and stress for the caregivers. A review of the latest literature was conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of assessment tools for feeding disorders in children with ASD. Method : This study analyzed assessments to identify feeding problems in ASD based on previous studies searched through keywords such as ASD, ASD feeding problem, and ASD feeding evaluation. Results : The ASD feeding disorder assessment was divided into direct and indirect assessments. Indirect assessment, in which caregivers measure a child's situation using questionnaires, is mainly used. The assessment of feeding disorders in children with ASD was divided into 1) mealtime behavior, 2) sensory processing, 3) food consumption, and 4) others. Conclusion : As the main feeding disorder characteristics of children with ASD are very diverse, a comprehensive evaluation is necessary but is still limited. Swallowing rehabilitation experts, such as occupational therapists, should apply comprehensive assessment tools based on a basic understanding of the feeding problems, behaviors, and sensations in ASD.

  • Urinalysis is a fundamental diagnostic test routinely performed in clinical laboratories. We evaluated two manual microscopy methods, including a novel protocol, against the standardized chamber method. A total of 402 specimens, comprising 201 positive each for red blood cells (RBCs) and white blood cells (WBCs) by the strip test and automated urine sediment analyzer, were selected for the analysis. The correlation coefficients between the standardized chamber method and the novel protocol RBC and WBC test were both r=0.98, indicating a high degree of correlation. The pair-wise agreement rates for the same grade between these two methods were 86.1% for RBCs and 88.6% for WBCs, with rates within one grade difference of both at 99.5%. In contrast, the agreement rates between the standardized chamber method and smaller or medium-sized laboratory methods were notably lower, with the same-grade rates at 11.9% for RBCs and 13.4% for WBCs, and within one grade difference at 67.2% and 74.1%, respectively. Additional analyses using the intraclass correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman plots confirmed that the novel protocol exhibited superior agreement compared to the other three manual microscopy methods tested. Therefore, we recommend the novel protocol as a standardized procedure for urine sediment preparation, given its high correlation and agreement with the standardized chamber method.

  • Since the List of Plant Diseases in Korea (DisList) was first published in 1986, the 6th edition appeared 36 years later. In 2023, the 6.1 edition, a revised and improved version of the 6th edition, was released to the public on the web free of charge. The contents of DisList increased, with the number of hosts increasing from 437 taxa to 1,420 taxa and the number of disease species increasing from 1,539 to 6,680. Among these, tree diseases are 3,586 species and their hosts include 504 taxa, providing much help to experts who need them. Meanwhile, the importance of accurate disease names continues to grow with the legalization of tree care, but many disease names are still inappropriate or misused, causing confusion. Disease names that do not follow the naming regulations are still registered, and even if the same pathogen infects hosts of the same taxa, the disease names are given differently, and there are many disease names that do not indicate the characteristics of the disease. Also, there are diseases reported without Korean names. In order to make DisList better, the review committee for disease names should establish the regulations to review and register disease names, and establish a system to review new disease names before publishing papers.

  • The synthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles (nanoceria, CeO2) has received significant attention across scientific and technological disciplines in the last decade. This article explores an overview of the green synthesis method and the antibacterial activity of nanoceria. The utilization of biological materials, such as plants and microorganisms, in the synthesis of nanoceria, has gained attention as an ecofriendly approach. Plants are rich in phytochemicals, including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, proteins, and other nutritious components. Likewise, microorganisms generate bioactive metabolites, pigments, enzymes, proteins, acids, and antibiotics. The phytochemicals and metabolites are involved in the reduction of metal salt into nanoceria and provide stability to synthesized nanoparticles. Nanoceria synthesis using plants and microorganisms is facile and ecofriendly, and synthesized nanoceria are biocompatible. Many biomedical applications of nanoceria have been reported, including those that are anticancer, anti-inflammatory, larvicidal, enzyme inhibiting, antibiofilm, and antimicrobial. However, in this review, we focused on and described in detail the antibacterial potential of nanoceria. The antibacterial activity of nanoceria occurs due to excessive reactive oxygen species generation, the impairment of the cell membrane, and the inhibition of cellular mechanisms. Ultimately, this review's primary goal is to provide readers with a logical understanding of the significant achievements of nanoceria as a cutting-edge therapeutic agent for treating a range of microbial pathogens and combating other diseases.

  • Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is a major cause of nosocomial infections and is one of the most commonly isolated bacterial species in the hospital and continues to be an important pathogens in both community and hospital-acquires infection. The purpose of this study is to investigate the carrier rate of S. aureus and MRSA in the community and molecular genetic characteristics of these organisms. The identification of S. aureus and MRSA were done by the procedures in Murray's manual of Clinical Microbiology and antibiotic susceptibility patterns by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute(CLSI). MRSA strains were confirms by oxacillin disk diffusion method. forty-six strains (71.9%) of S. aureus were isolated from the nasal specimens of 64 students in health science university. twenty-two strains (22%) of 46 S. aureus were resistant to penicillin and oxacillin. twenty-two strains of the 46 S. aureus isolates were methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The mecA genes in MRSA were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Community and nosocomial infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus are a significant problem worldwide. There continuous epidemiological study is to investigate the prevalence of MRSA in community acquired infections.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze changes in thrombus signal within a stent in relation to contrast media dilution ratios during the use of an automatic exposure control (AEC) system. A custom-built flow model phantom was used, with contrast media concentrations increased by 5% increments from 5% to 100%, resulting in a total of 20 variations. The signal intensity(SI) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the model vessel, stent, and thrombus were analyzed. The results demonstrated that under no-flow conditions, signal intensity and CNR increased linearly with higher contrast media concentrations. However, under flow conditions, the CNR peaked at concentrations between 60% and 70%. Particularly, in models with thrombi within the stent, the use of undiluted contrast media resulted in the highest CNR, indicating that using undiluted contrast media is effective for detecting thrombi within stents in clinical settings.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to understand the doctor's attitude toward hospice and palliative care for terminal cancer patients. Methods: Specialists who work at general hospital were surveyed with questionnaires about hospice and palliative care for terminal cancer patients. The questionnaires comprise 17 items. The data were statistically analyzed. Results: Eighty one doctors responded. Their median age was 35 years old. Thirty six doctors (44.4%) were from internal medicine. The median of specialist's experience was 4 years. Forty three respondents (53.2%) have rarely examined and treated cancer patients even a week. Thirty seven respondents (45.6%) knew the exact definition of hospice and palliative care. Eighty respondents (98.8%) felt that hospice and palliative care is necessary, and 91.2% of them responded the necessity of palliative medicine specialist. As to the question 'Do you positively referred terminal cancer patient to hospice and palliative care?', 55 respondents (67.9%) responded 'Yes' and 22 (27.2%) 'No'. Among the 'Yes' respondents 17 (30.9%) had an experience of hesitation for referring patients to hospice and palliative care; the most common reason was the disagreement of family members (6, 35.3%). As for the reasons of responding 'No', 6 doctors (27.2%) did so because of their 'feeling of abandoning the patients' and the other f for the 'lack of information on the referral procedure for hospice and palliative care'. Thirty seven specialists (45.7%) thought it is most desirable for the patients to have hospice and palliative care for 3 months before death. Fifty eight specialists (71.6%) responded that hospice and palliative care help controlling the patient's psychological symptoms before all. Conclusion: While most doctors recognize the need of hospice and palliative care for patients with terminal ranter, their attitude toward hospice and palliative care was rather reserved. We suggest that continuing education, information and promotion for hospice and palliative care should be provided for doctors.

  • Objectives: Colonoscopy is a popular tool for screening for colon cancer throughout the world. The incidence of polypectomy and follow-up colonoscopy are persistently increasing but the studies about follow-up test after polypectomy are still lack of its domestic sources. This study is designed to look into the recurrence rate of colon polyps and risk factors after polypectomy. Methods: This is a retrospective study by reviewing medical charts of 147 patients who underwent polypectomy and follow-up colonoscopy from Jan. 2000 to Mar. 2008. The Kudo classification was used to describe the polyps found in the colonoscopy. The follow-up period was defined as the term between polypectomy and the first colonoscopy follow up. Results: Seventy six point two percent of the enrolled patient were male and the mean age was $56.5{\pm}8.1$. Mean follow-up period was $24.9{\pm}13.7$ (6 - 65) months. The cumulative recurrence rate of 1 year was 11.6%. The rate of 2 years was 36.7% and that of 3 years was 55.8%. The number of polyps was the factor which statistically showed significant relation of its recurrence rate. The histological morphology characteristic of polyps could be one independent factor which may be associated to the recurrence of polyps. Conclusions: The importance of colonoscopy follow up after polypectomy was clearly emphasized through the cumulative recurrence rate of 55.8%. Therefore, there is a need for more domestic studies with a large number of patients about the recurrence of polyps after polypectomy.

  • Objective:The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between sustained attention deficits in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) children and short-term Heart Rate Variability(HRV) parameters. In addition, we evaluate the relationship between The ADHD rating scale(ARS), the computerized ADHD diagnostic system(ADS) and Parenting stress index- short form(PSI-SF). Methods:This study was performed in the department of children and Adolescent psychiatry, Korea university Guro hospital from august 2008 to January 2009. We evaluated HRV parameters by short-term recordings of 5 minutes. K-ARS and ADS are used for screening and identifying ADHD children. Intelligence was measured using Korean educational Developmental Institute-wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. The caregivers Complete Parenting Stress Index scale for evaluation parent stress. Results:The low frequency(LF) was significantly correlated with response variability of ADS. However, the other variables of ARS and ADS were not significantly correlated with LF. Hyperactivity subscale of ARS was significantly correlated with parental distress subscale and difficult child subscale of PSI-SF and inattention subscale of ARS was also significantly correlated with dysfunctional interaction and difficult child subscale of PSI-SF. Conclusion:The LF, 0.10-Hz component of HRV is known to measure effort allocation. This study shows that the LF component of HRV is significantly correlated with the response variability of ADS. This means that more severe symptoms of ADHD were correlated with the increase in the LF that means decreased effort allocation. These results also support the clinical usability of HRV in the assessment of ADHD. Furthermore, PSI-SF is correlated with hyperactivity and inattention variables of ARS.
