  • Radio-sensitivity of pathogens in commercial marinated beef ribs, Galbi, and effect of irradiation on microbiological safety and sensory properties of marinated beef rib were investigated. Commercial raw marinated beef ribs were highly contaminated by pathogenic microorganisms including Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus, ranged from $10^{3}\;to\;10^{4}\;CFU/g$. Gamma irradiation reduced pathogen count during storage. No viable cells of pathogens were observed in sample irradiated at 7.5 kGy except for Bacillus cereus. Radio-sensitivity of inoculated pathogens in marinated beef ribs and commercial one showed $D_{10}$ value of 0.54-0.60 and 2.15-2.98, respectively, In sensory evaluation irradiated sample showed highest color and overall acceptance among treatments (p<0.05). Results indicate low dose (2.5-5.0 kGy) irradiation is effective for ensuring safety of marinated beef ribs without decreasing sensory quality.

  • Fusarium sambucinum species complex (FSAMSC) is an important taxonomic group, causing severe plant diseases. Many studies were carried out on FSAMSC plant diseases in Korea, but only 2 species (F. graminearum, F. sambucinum) from 14 host plants were registered in the List of Plant Disease in Korea. To clarify FSAMSC diversity and their pathogenecity, we examined FSAMSC isolates preserved in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection. Fifty-seven strains were reidentifed as 7 species (F. asiaticum, F. graminearum, F. vorosii, F. meridionale, F. boothii, F. kyushuense, F. armeniacum) based on multi-locus sequence typing analysis. According to previous reports and result of this study, 5 species (F. asiaticum, F. graminearum, F. vorosii, F. armeniacum, F. sambucinum) were pathogenic on 24 host plants in FSAMSC, while the pathogenicity of 3 species (F. meridionale, F. boothii, F. kyushuense) were not clear.

  • Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is the causal agent of bacterial blight on rice. In this paper, current status on molecular genetic study of major virulence genes, hypersensitive response and pathogenicity (hrp), productions of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS), extracellular enzymes and lipopolysaccharides (LPS), avr genes were reviewed. The IS elements with 611 copies including 133 ORF IS were inserted in various regions of the Xoo genome and in expecially regions franking virulence genes. Whole genome sequence of X. oryzae pv. oryzae KACC10331 were used for defining genetic organization of the virulence genes. Futhermore, the virulence genes in Xoo genome were compared to those of other Xanthomonas species in Blast GenBank data base.

  • The purpose of this study was to apply the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) system to the production of dressing. The hazard analysis examined the main materials, industrial water, microbial evaluation, and airborne microorganisms of each working area, as well as the pathogenic microbial contamination risk. The survey was conducted at SJ Company in Jincheon (Chungchengbuk-do), Korea for 30 days from April 1, 2012 to April 30, 2012. The results showed that raw material microorganisms had a total plate count in industrial water below $3.00{\times}10$ CFU/mL in working room I, working room II, the packing room, washing water, and the inspection room for five times in each place. During dressing production (including heat treatment and mixing), general bacteria were detected at an average of $3{\times}10$ CFU/mL, but yeast, mold, and pathogenic bacteria were not detected. Airborne microbiological evaluation (for total plate count, yeast, and mold) found levels below the legal limit at each working area. While workers were positive for microbes in total plate counts, coliform and Staphylococcus aureus were not detected. In conclusion, standards for hygienic management should be established to prevent and decrease hazards, such as general bacteria and pathogenic microorganisms (for example, E. coli, B. cereus, Listeria spp, Salmonella spp, Staph. aureus, Clostridium perfringens, yeast, and mold), and to found critical limits for microorganisms with an HACCP system.

  • The study has been carried to investigate a possibility to control several major insect pest of forest by microbial pathogens existing in nature as one of the biological control measure. Microorganisms including polyhedral virus isolated from diseased fall webworm were total of 4 kinds pathogenic microbes among these 4 kinds were polyhedral virus and Bacillus .species. Control effect of these two pathogens appeared to be $70.6\%$ and $49.5\%$, respectively, when they were compared with those of control plot that was $27.8\%$. Each one of bacterium species and fungus species were isolated from diseased Japanese alder leaf beetle. Pathogenisity to the healthy beetle was recognized by the fungus species, while the bacterium showed none of pathogenisity. The fungus was identified as Beauveria sp. and its effect on the beetle control was $96.2\%$ while untreated plot showed $49.2\%$ of dead beetles in the same period. Fifteen species of microbes were isolated from diseased larvae of pine gall midge. Six species out of 15 showed certain level of insecticidal effect to the larvae of the insects. The highest efficiency was showed by a fungus species, Fusarium sp. and was followed by Bacillus SP. I, Spicaria sp. pathogens isolated from larvae of pine gall midge did not affected to both of Japanese alder leaf beetles and fall webworms in any means.

  • The main cause of oral disease is the formation of tooth surface bacteria, and a chemical mouthwash is used as a suppression method. However, chemical preparations have side effects, so we tried to verify the antibacterial effect of bamboo extract against oral microbes. Subjects were 15 college students as a control group and an experimental group, and the changes in oral microbes before and after the use of distilled water and bamboo extract were compared. Analysis of SPSS Windows ver. 20.0 was used (p<0.05). Results The total number of pathogenic microorganisms further decreased after using bamboo extract solution after using gargling solution between groups.

  • Groundwater is widely used as drinking water supplies around the world. However, microbial contamination of groundwater is a serious environmental problem that degrades drinking water quality and poses a great threat to human health. Among the pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, and protozoa, viruses are not readily removed during transport through soils, having high mobility in groundwater environment due to their smaller size compared to bacteria and protozoa. Studies regarding the fate and transport of viruses in soils and aquifers are necessary to determine the vulnerability of groundwater to microbial contamination and to secure safe drinking water sources. Also, these studies provide important information to establish the regulations and policies related to public health. This review paper presented the field and laboratory studies conducted for the fate and transport of viruses in subsurface environments. Also, the paper provided the factors affecting the fate and transport of viruses, the characteristics of bacteriophages used for virus studies, and virus transport model/colloid filtration theory. Based on this review work, future researches should be performed actively to set up the viral protection zone for the protection of groundwater from viral contamination sources. Especially, the researches should be focused on the development of mathematical models to calculate the setback distance and travel time for the viral protection zone along with the accumulation of information related to the model parameters.
