The way of change detection in which presence of a different item is determined between memory and test arrays with a brief in-between time interval resembles how visual search is done considering that the different item is searched upon the onset of a test array being compared against the items in memory. According to the resemblance, the present study examined whether varying the probability of change occurrence in a visual short-term memory-based change detection task can influence the aspect of response-decision making (i.e., change prevalence effect). The simple-feature change detection task in the study consisted of a set of four colored boxes followed by another set of four colored boxes between which the participants determined presence or absence of a color change from one box to the other. The change prevalence was varied to 20, 50, or 80% in terms of change occurrences in total trials, and their change detection errors, detection sensitivity, and their subsequent RTs were analyzed. The analyses revealed that as the change prevalence increased, false alarms became more frequent while misses became less frequent, along with delayed correct-rejection responses. The observed change prevalence effect looks very similar to the target prevalence effect varying according to probability of target occurrence in visual search tasks, indicating that the background principles deriving these two effects may resemble each other.

The present study investigated the effect size of attention and consciousness on change detection. We confirmed the effect size of consciousness by comparing the condition which combined attention and consciousness and the condition of attention without consciousness. Then, we confirmed the effect size of attention by comparing the condition of attention without consciousness and the control condition which excluded attention and consciousness. For this purpose, change detection task and continuous flash suppression (CFS) were used. CFS renders a highly visible image invisible. In CFS, one eye is presented with a static stimulus, while the other eye is presented with a series of rapidly changing stimuli, such as mondrian patterns. The result is that the static stimulus becomes suppressed from conscious awareness by the stimuli presented in the other eye. We used a customized device with smartphone and google cardboard instead of stereoscope to trigger CFS. In Experiment 1-1, we reenacted some study to validate our experimental setup. Our experimental setup produced the duration of stimulus suppression that were similar to those of preceding research. In Experiment 1-2, we reenacted a study for attention without consciousness using an customized device. The results showed that attention without consciousness more strongly work as a cue. We think that it is reasonable to use CFS treatment employing smartphone and google cardboard for a follow-up study. In Experiment 2, when performing the change detection task, we measured the effect size of consciousness and attention by manipulating the consciousness level of cue. We used the method in which everything but the variable of interest kept being fixed. That way, the difference this independent variable makes to the action of the entire system can be isolated. We found that there was significant difference of correct response rate on change detection performance among different consciousness level of cue. In this study, we investigated that not only the role of attention and consciousness were different also we were able to estimated the effect size.
We used holes defined by color similarity (Experiment 1) and binocular disparity (Experiment 2) to study how the inner contour of an object (i.e., boundary of a hole in it) is encoded in visual working memory. Many studies in VWM have shown that an object's boundary properties can be integrated with its surface properties via their shared spatial location, yielding an object-based encoding benefit. However, encoding of the hole contours has rarely been tested. We presented objects (squares or circles) containing a bar under a change detection paradigm, and relevant features to be remembered were the color of objects and the orientation of bars (or holes). If the contour of a hole belongs to the surrounding object rather than to the hole itself, the object-based feature binding hypothesis predicts that the shape of it can be integrated with color of an outer object, via their shared spatial location. Thus, in the hole display, change detection performance was expected to better than in the conjunction display where orientation and color features to be remembered were assigned to different parts of a conjunction object, and comparable to that in a single bar display where both orientation and color were assigned into a single bar. However, the results revealed that performance in the hole display did not differ from that in the conjunction display. This suggests that the shape of holes is not automatically encoded together with the surface properties of the outer object via object-based feature binding, but encoded independently from the surrounding object.
This study investigates the characteristics of visual working memory (VWM) representations by examining two theoretical models: the integrated-object and the parallel-independent feature storage models. Experiment I involved a change detection task where participants memorized arrays of either orientation bars, colored squares, or both. In the one-feature condition, the memory array consisted of one feature (either orientations or colors), whereas the two-feature condition included both. We found no differences in change detection performance between the conditions, favoring the integrated object model over the parallel-independent feature storage model. Experiment II employed a recall task with memory arrays of isosceles triangles' orientations, colored squares, or both, and one-feature and two-feature conditions were compared for their recall performance. We found again no clear difference in recall accuracy between the conditions, but the results of analyses for memory precision and guessing responses indicated the weak object model over the strong object model. For ongoing debates surrounding VWM's representational characteristics, these findings highlight the dominance of the integrated object model over the parallel independent feature storage model.
The aim of this study was to investigate font change blindness based on text difficulty in the "Moving Window Task", as originally introduced by McConkie and Rayner(1975). During the reading process where the moving window was applied, different target words in terms of font style compared to the text were presented. As participants' gaze reached the position of the target word, the font of the target word was changed to match the text font. The font of the target word before the change was either sans-serif when the text font was serif, or serif when the text font was sans-serif. After completing the reading task, more than half of the participants(62.5%) reported not detecting the font change. Observation of eye movements at the target word positions revealed that when understanding the content within the text was difficult, there was an increase in the number of regressions, an extended gaze duration, and a reduction in saccade length. Specifically, the increase in the number of regressions was evident only when the text font was serif, in other words, when the font of the target word shifted from sans-serif to serif. These results suggest that sensory interference unrelated to content understanding is not easily detected during reading. However, the possibility of detection increases when comprehension of the content becomes challenging. Furthermore, this exceptional detection possibility implies that it may be higher when the text font is serif compared to when it is sans-serif.
The present study examined memory accuracy for faces with positive, negative and neutral emotional expressions to test whether their emotional content can affect visual working memory (VWM) performance. Participants remembered a set of face pictures in which facial expressions of the faces were randomly assigned from pleasant, unpleasant and neutral emotional categories. Participants' task was to report presence or absence of an emotion change in the faces by comparing the remembered set against another set of test faces displayed after a short delay. The change detection accuracies of the pleasant, unpleasant and neutral face conditions were compared under two memory exposure duration of 500ms vs. 1000ms. Under the duration of 500ms, the accuracy in the pleasant condition was higher than both unpleasant and neutral conditions. However the difference disappeared when the duration was extended to 1000ms. The results indicate that a positive facial expression can improve VWM accuracy relative to the negative or positive expressions especially when there is not enough time for forming durable VWM representations.
The present study aimed to understand the sensory characteristic of change detection by comparing the experience of detecting a salient visual change against the experience of detecting a sensory conflict evoked by a binocular mismatch. In Experiment 1, we used the change detection task where 2, 4, or 6 items were short-term remembered in visual working memory and were compared with following test items. The half of change-present trials were manipulated to elicit a binocular rivalry on the test item with the change by way of monocular inputs across the eyes. The results showed that change detection accuracy without the rivalry manipulation declined evidently as the display setsize increased whereas no such setsize effect was observed with the rivalry manipulation. Experiment 2 tested search efficiency for the search array where the target was designated as an item with the rivalry manipulation, and found the search was very efficient regardless of the rivalry manipulation. The results of Experiment 1 and 2 showed that when the given memory load varies, the experience of detecting a salient visual change become similar to the experience of detecting a sensory conflict by a binocular rivalry.
A recent study of visual working memory(VWM) under a change detection paradigm proposed an idea that the comparison process of VWM representations against incoming perceptual inputs can be performed more rapidly than the process of forming durable memory representations into VWM. To test this hypothesis, we compared the size of interference effect caused by pattern-backward masks following after either the sample(sample-mask condition) or test items (test-mask condition). In Experiment 1, subjects performed a color change detection task for four colored-boxes, and pattern masks with mask-onset asynchronies(MSOA) of either 64ms or 150ms followed each item location either after the sample or after the test items. The change detection accuracy was both comparable in the sample-mask condition regardless of the MSOAs, whereas the accuracy in the trials with a MSOA of 150ms was substantially higher than the MSOA of 65ms in the test-masking condition. In Experiment 2, we manipulated setsizes to 1, 2, 3, 4 items and also MSOAs to 117ms, 234ms, 350ms, 484ms and compared the pattern of interference across a variety of setsize and MSOA conditions. The sample-mask condition yielded a pattern of masking interference which became more evident as the setsize increases and as the MSOA was shorter. However, this pattern of interference was less apparent in the test-mask condition. These results indicate that the comparison process between remembered items in VWM and perceptual inputs is less vulnerable to interference from pattern-backward masking than VWM consolidation is, and thus support for the recent idea that the comparison process in VWM can be performed very fast and accurately.

Program plagiarism is a significant factor to reduce the quality of education in computer programming. In this paper, we propose the technique of identifying similar or identical programs in order to prevent students from reckless copying their programming assignments. Existing approaches for identifying similar programs are mainly based on fingerprints or pattern matching for text documents. Different from those existing approaches, we propose an approach based on the program structur. Using paring progrmas, we first transform programs into XML documents by representing syntactic components in the programs with elements in XML document, then run X-tree Diff+, which is the change detection algorithm for XML documents, and produce an edit script as a change. The decision of similar or identical programs is made on the analysis of edit scripts in terms of program plagiarism. Analysis of edit scripts allows users to understand the process of conversion between two programs so that users can make qualitative judgement considering the characteristics of program assignment and the degree of plagiarism.
