  • Most metallic materials and alloys show rate independence or negative rate sensitivity in some temperature region when dynamic strain aging occurs. It is generally recognized that negative rate sensitivity is an essential feature of dynamic strain aging that can depend on strain and/or strain rate. The unified viscoplasticity theory based on overstress is applied to reproduce a change of rate sensitivity type that depends on strain or strain rate. This is accomplished through the introduction of a single new term in the growth law of the equilibrium stress, which is a tensor valued state variable of the model. It is also shown that the new term can be used to reproduce a dramatic increase of rate sensitivity in dynamic plasticity.

  • The prediction of bone strength by ultrasound velocity and broadband ultrasound attenuation was examined. Ultrasound velocity and broadband attenuation were measured for sixty specimens of human trabecular bone. Samples were divided into two equal groups and loaded in compression at the strain rates of $0.0004\;s^{-1}$ and of $0.08\;s^{-1}$. The ultimate strength was determined for each specimen. Specimens tested at $0.08\;s^{-1}$ had a mean value of strength 63% higher than the specimens tested at $0.0004\;s^{-1}$. Ultrasound velocity and broadband attenuation were significantly associated with compressive strength at both strain rates. Mechanical strength was also correlated strongly with a linear combination of ultrasound velocity and broadband attenuation for both the low and high loading rates. The use of ultrasound parameters may provide good clinical means for assessing the resistance of trabecular bone to both low and high energy trauma.

  • UV laser micromachining of metallic materials has been used in microelectronic and other industries. This paper shows on experimental investigation of micromachining of copper using a 355nm UV laser with 50ns pulse duration. A finite element model with high strain rate effect is especially suggested to investigate the phenomena which are only dominated by mechanically pressure impact in disregard of thermally heat transfer. In order to consider the strain rate effect, Cowper-Symonds model was used. To analyze the dynamic deformation during a very short processing time, which is nearly about several tens nanoseconds, a commercial Finite Element Analysis (FEA) code, LS-DYNA 3D, was employed for the computational simulation of the UV laser micro machining behavior for thin copper material. From these computational results, depth of the dent (from one to six pulsed) were observed and compared with previous experimental results. This will help us to understand interaction between UV laser beam and material.

  • A subsea pipeline for oil/gas transportation or gas injection is subjected to extreme variations in internal pressure and temperature, which can involve a strain rate effect on the pipeline material. This paper describes the flow stress characteristics of a pipeline material called API 5L X52N PSL2, using and experimental approach. High-speed tensile tests were carried out for two metal samples taken from the base and weld parts. The target temperature was 100℃, but two other temperature levels of –20℃and 0℃ were taken into account. Three strain rates were also considered for each temperature level: quasi static, 1/s, and 10/s. Flow stress data were proposed for each temperature level according to these strain rates. The dynamic hardening behaviors of the base and weld metals appeared to be nonlinear on the log-scale strain rate axis. A very high material constant value was required for the Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation to support the experimental results.

  • This paper is to predict quality deterioration resulting from a caulking process of yoke which is a part of automotive steering system. The caluking is a plastic deformation process involving such as impact of high speed tool, contacts between part and fixtures and strain rate sensitivity of the part material. Elaborate application of finite element method is neccesary to calculate changes of part dimensions because they fall into a level of tolerances. Simple work hardening and strain rate sensitive model is proposed fur the material and applied for the simulation by using Abaqus which is able to cater for elastoplastic rate sensitive material and contacts. Numerical results of test models that represent tensile bar and tensile plate are compared with material data inputs. Dimensional changes for the yoke are calculated from simulations and compared to the mesurements and they show good agreement. The method presented here with the material model proved to be valuable to assess quality deterioration for similar metal forming processes.

  • In this paper, isotropically consolidated drained triaxial compression test device installed with bender elements is used to measure stress, stain, and shear wave velocity, from which the characteristics of shear strength and Poisson'ratio are investigated. The results show that there is a unique relationship between maximum shear modulus determined from shear wave velocity and effective vertical stress at failure, which is defined as the sum of vertical and radial stresses at failure. The correlation is very useful since it is possible to predict the shear strength and internal friction angle from shear wave velocity. In addition, Poisson's ratio is determined from measured axial and volumetric strains. It is demonstrated that the range of measured Poisson's ratio is between 0.15 and 0.6, and increases with the axial strain. The ratios at axial strains smaller than 0.2% corresponds to the range recommended in design codes, which are approximately from 0.3~0.35. However, at axial strains exceeding 1%, the measured ratios are between 0.5 and 0.6. It is therefore shown that use of ratios commonly used in practice will result in pronounced underestimation at large strains.

  • This paper presents a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) technique to obtain compressive stress-strain data for rubber materials. An experimental technique that modifies the conventional Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) has been developed for measuring the compressive stress-strain responses of materials with low mechanical impedance and low compressive strengths such as rubber. This paper introduces an all-polymeric pressure bar which achieves a closer impedance match between the pressure bar and the specimen materials. In addition, we are a pulse shaper to lengthen the rising time of the incident wave to ensure stress equilibrium and homogeneous deformation of a rubber materials. It is found that the modified technique can be determine the dynamic deformation behavior of an NBR rubber more accurately.

  • The behavior of continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) and the effect of the steel ratio on the behavior under moving wheel loads were investigated in this study. The CRCP sections having different steel ratios of 0.6, 0.7, and 0.8% were considered to evaluate the load transfer efficiency (LTE) at transverse cracks and to investigate the strains in CRCP when the system is subjected to moving vehicle loads. The LTEs were obtained by conducting the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) tests and the tests were performed at three different times of a day to find the curling effect due to the daily temperature changes in CRCP. The strains in the concrete slab and the bond braker layer of the CRCP system under moving vehicle loads were obtained using the embedded strain gages. The results of this study show that the LTEs at transverse cracks are very high and not affected by the time of testing and the steel ratio. The strains in CRCP under vehicle loads become smaller as the vehicle speed increases or as the wandering distance increases; however, the strains are not clearly affected by the steel ratio.

  • In order to investigate the high temperature deformation characteristics in YBaiCu307-, oxide superconductor, the compression test was performed at temperatures from $890^{\circ}C$ to $930^{\circ}C$ at initial strain rate between $1.0 x 10^{-5}s^{-1}\; and \; 1.0^{-4}s^{-1}$. As the temperature increased and the initial strain rate decreased, the flow stress decreased. The strain rate sensitivity exponent measured as 0.41-0.46, supporting occurence of a superplastic deformation. The activation energy for superplastic deformation was calculated as 500-580KJ/mol, which decreased with increasing Ag content. Microstructure of the superplastically-deformed specimens showed that a grain growth occurred during deformation, and it appeared to be considerable when Ag content increased, but most grains still remained equiaxed after deformation. In this study, the deformation mechanism of YBCO superconductor was the grain boundary sliding with the diffusional accommodation and the contribution of the gram boundary sliding to the total strain was estimated to be 65%.
