  • A tensor invariant model equation for the turbulent energy dissipation rate is proposed in the present study, which is able to simulate secondary straining effects such as curvature effects without the introduction of additional empirical input. The source term in this model has a combined form of the generation term due to the mean vorticity with the conventional one due to the mean strain rate. An extended low-Reynolds-number $k-\epsilon$ turbulence model involving this new model equation is tested for a turbulent Coutte flow between coaxial cylinders with inner cylinder rotated, which is a well defined example of curved flows. The predicted results indicate that the present model works much better for this flow, compared with previous models.

  • This paper is concerned with the elastic buckling of thin-walled arches that are subjected to uniform bending. Nonlinear strain-displacement relations with the initial curvature are substituted into the second variation of the total potential energy to obtain the energy equation including initial curvature effects. The approximation for initial curvature effects that the bending normal strain distribution is linear across the cross section is applied consistently in the derivation process. The closed form solution is obtained for flexural-torsional buckling of arches under uniform bending and, it is compared with the previous theoretical results.

  • An analytical method capable of predicting various stress-strain responses in axially loaded concrete confined with FRP (fiber reinforced polymers) composites in a rational manner is presented. Its underlying idea is that the volumetric expansion due to progressive microcracking in mechanically loaded concrete is an important measure of the extent of damage in the material microstructure, and can be utilized to estimate the load-carrying capacity of concrete by considering the corresponding accumulated damage. Following from this, an elastic modulus expressed as a function of area strain and concrete porosity, the energy-balance equation relating the dilating concrete to the confining device interactively, the varying confining pressure, and an incremental calculation algorithm are included in the solution procedure. The proposed method enables the evaluation of lateral strains consecutively according to the related mechanical model and the energy-balance equation, rather than using an empirically derived equation for Poisson's ratio or dilation rate as in other analytical methods. Several existing analytical methods that can predict the overall response were also examined and discussed, particularly focusing on the way of considering the volumetric expansion. The results predicted by the proposed and Samaan's bilinear equation models correlated with observed results with a reasonable degree, however it can be judged that the latter is not capable of predicting the response of lateral strains correctly due to incorporating the initial Poisson's ratio and the final converged dilation rate only. Further, the proposed method seems to have greater benefits in other applications by the use of the fundamental principles of mechanics.

  • The main objective of this study is to examine the feasibility of using lead zirconate titanate (PZT)'s direct piezoelectric response as vibrational feature for damage monitoring in beam structures. For the purpose, modal strain energy (MSE)-based damage monitoring in beam structures using dynamic strain response based on the direct piezoelectric effect of PZT sensor is proposed in this paper. The following approaches are used to achieve the objective. First, the theoretical background of PZT's direct piezoelectric effect for dynamic strain response is presented. Next, the damage monitoring method that utilizes the change in MSE to locate of damage in beam structures is outlined. For validation, forced vibration tests are carried out on lab-scale cantilever beam. For several damage scenarios, dynamic responses are measured by three different sensor types (accelerometer, PZT sensor and electrical strain gage) and damage monitoring tasks are performed thereafter. The performance of PZT's direct piezoelectric response for MSE-based damage monitoring is evaluated by comparing the damage localization results from the three sensor types.

  • Fatigue damage of 2.2Ni-1Cr-0.5Mo steel used fir high strength pressure tubes and vessels was evaluated using uniaxial specimens subjected to strain-controlled fatigue loading. Based on the fatigue test results from different strain ratios of -2. -i 0, 0.5, 0.75, the fatigue damage of the steel was represented by using a cyclic strain energy density. Mean stress relaxation depended on the magnitude of the applied strain amplitude. The high pressure vessel steel exhibited the cyclic softening behavior. Total strain energy density consisting of the plastic strain energy density and the elastic tensile strain energy density described fairly well the fatigue life of the steel, taking the mean stress effects into account. Compared to other fatigue damage parameters, fatigue life prediction by the cyclic strain energy density showed a good correlation with the experimental fatigue lift within a factor of 3.

  • A tensile failure criterion that can minimize the mesh-dependency of simulation results on the basis of the fracture energy concept is introduced, and conventional plasticity based damage models for concrete such as CSC model and HJC model, which are generally used for the blast analyses of concrete structures, are compared with orthotropic model in blast test to verify the proposed criterion. The numerical prediction of the time-displacement relations in mid span of the beam during blast loading are compared with experimental results. Analytical results show that the numerical error is substantially reduced and the accuracy of numerical results is improved by applying a unique failure strain value determined according to the proposed criterion.

  • Up to now, several mathematical theories based on strain energy functions have been developed for rubber materials. These theories, coupled with the finite element method, can be used very effectively by engineers to analyze and design rubber components. However, due to the complexities of the mathematical formulations and the lack of general guidelines available fur the analysis of rubber components, it is a formidable task for an engineer to analyze rubber components. In this paper a method for predicting strain energy functions - Neo-Hookean model and Mooney-Rivlin model - from the hardness using the empirical equation without any experiment is discussed. First based on the elasticity theories of rubber, the relation between stress and strain is defined. Then for the butyl rubbers, the model constants of Neo-Hookean model and Mooney-Rivlin model are calculated from uniaxial tension tests. From the results, the usefulness of the empirical equation to estimate elastic modulus from hardness is confirmed and, fur Mooney-Rivlin model, the predicted and the experimental model constants are compared and discussed.

  • In general, moving vehicles generate continuous and repetitive strain of energy on bridges. The strain energy can convert to electric energy due to its piezoelectric element. However, some factors should be considered in order to reasonably assess the feasibility such as load distribution applied on bridges and the relationship of strains generated according to loads. This study was carried out to estimate the generated voltage when piezoelectric elements were installed to a bridge. A steel-concrete composite specimen was fabricated and loads were applied, considering vehicle load-effects. As a result, the voltage generated in the element was evaluated and compared with the analysis equation of the piezoelectric effect.

  • 현재 음성인식에서 가장 많이 사용하고 있는 특징벡터는 MFCC(Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients)이다. 그러나 MFCC도 잡음이 존재하는 환경에서는 인식 성능이 저하된다. 이러한 MFCC의 단점을 해결하기 위해 mel sub-band 스펙트럼 차감법과 신호대잡음비에 따른 에너지 압축을 이용하는 CMSBS(Compression and Mel Sub-Band Spectral subtraction) 방법을 사용한다.
