  • The material properties of rubber was determined by the experiments of uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, planer tension, equi-biaxial tension and volumetric compression. In compression test, it is difficult to obtain the pure state of compression stress and strain due to friction force between the specimen and compression platen. In this study, the stress and strain data from the equi-biaxial tension test were converted to compression stress and strain and compared to a pure state of simple compression data when friction was zero. The compression test device with the tapered platen was proposed to overcome the effect of friction. It was fumed out that the relationship of the stress and strain using the tapered platen was in close agreement with the pure compressive state.

  • The effect of rubber mold on densification behavior of pure iron powder was investigated under cold isostatic pressing. The thickness effect of rubber mold was also studied. The elastoplastic constitutive equation based on the yield function of Shima and Oyane was implemented into the finite element program(ABAQUS) to predict compaction responses of metal powder under cold isostatic pressing. The hyperelastic constitutive equation based on Moony-Rivlin and Ogden strain energy potentials was also employed to analyze deformation of rubber mold. The coefficients of the strain energy potentials were obtained from tension and volumetric compression data of rubber. Finite element results were compared with experimental data for densification of pure iron powder under cold isostatic pressing.

  • This paper presents an analytic method and a design technique for golf shoes with air-cycled pump in the midsole. The golf shoes are modeled using the finite element method for better design by considering the configuration of the midsole and the outsole, which compose the golf shoes. Also the optimum size and shape of air-cycled pump in the midsole is examined. The values or standard human pressure for boundary conditions are adopted for the FEA(Finite Element Analysis). The unknown constants of the strain energy function of Ogden type are observed in accordance with the axial tension test. By the commercial FEM software for nonlinear analysis, MARC V7.3, the strains and the values of volume change for the midsole and the outsole are obtained, respectively. It can be concluded that results obtained by FEM in the midsole and the outsole are different depending on the characteristic of elastomer The results reported herein provide better understanding of analyzing the golf shoes. Moreover, it is believed that those properties of the results can be utilized in the shoes industry to develop the effective design method.

  • While the repeated traffic loading accumulates the damage of asphalt pavement, the damage has being healed during rest periods. And then, this healing enhances the fatigue life of asphalt pavement. A method was developed to determine the healing rate of asphalt mixture in terms of recovered dissipated creep strain energy (DCSE) per unit time, and the healing properties of four different asphalt mixtures were evaluated. The test procedure consists of repeated loading test and periodical resilient modulus tests. A normalized healing rate in terms of $DCSE/DCSE_{applied}$ was defined to evaluate the healing properties independently of the amount of damage incurred in the mixture. From the test results, it was concluded that the healing rates of asphalt mixtures were increased exponentially as the temperature was increased and more affected by the structural characteristics of mixture such as asphalt content than the binder characteristics such as the polymer modification.

  • This paper deals with the numerical determination of the stress intensity factors of cracked aluminum plates under the mixed mode of $K_I$ and $K_{II}$ in glass-epoxy fiber reinforced composites. For the stress intensity factors, two different models are reviewed such as VCCT and two-step extension method. The p-convergent partial layerwise model is adopted to determine the fracture parameters in terms of energy release rates and stress intensity factors. The p-convergent approach is based on the concept of subparametric element. In assumed displacement field, strain-displacement relations and 3-D constitutive equations of a layer are obtained by combination of 2-D and 1-D higher-order shape functions. In the elements, Lobatto shape functions and Gauss-Lobatto technique are employed to interpolate displacement fields and to implement numerical quadrature. Using the models and techniques considered, effects of composite laminate configuration according to inclined angles and adhesive properties on the performance of bonded composite patch are investigated. In addition to these, the out-of-plane bending effect has been investigated across the thickness of patch repaired laminate plates due to the change of neutral axis. The present model provides accuracy and simplicity in terms of stress intensity factors, stress distribution, number of degrees of freedom, and energy release rates as compared with previous works in literatures.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and utilize new assessment of liquefaction potential based on DSC(disturbed state concept) and dissipated energy concept. The term liquefaction has suddenly loses its shear strength and behaves like a fluid. Liquefaction has been a source of a major damage during severe earthquake. In this study, the cyclic undrained behavior of Joomoonjin strand is investigated by using an automates triaxial testing device(C. K. Chan type). In order to assess liquefaction potential of saturated strand, DSC method and energy method are applied for the experimental data. The use of DSC method and energy method to define the liquefaction potential is verified through laboratory testis of cyclic triaxial test on saturated sand specimens. Based on the analytical results of DSC method, the relationship between the factor affecting liquefaction characteristics(Dr) and physical properties of the saturated santa(fs and D.) is found. Based on the analytical results of energy method, it is found that the initial liquefaction of rand is related to the significant change in the dissipated energy. Finally, it is shown that the DSC method and energy method can capture the liquefaction mechanism.

  • A commercially available soft PZT wafer that is poled in thickness direction is subjected to longitudinal tensile stress loading in both short and open-circuit conditions. Variations of electric displacement in thickness direction and in-plane strains are measured over time during the loading. Different material responses in the two electrical boundary conditions are explained by the effects of piezoelectrically produced internal electric field on linear material moduli and domain switching mechanisms. Finally, a free energy model of normal distribution is introduced to explain the observed creep behavior, and its predictions are compared with experimental observations.

  • In this paper, robust structural design of the PEMFC stack gasket is pursued with Taguchi method by considering the noise factor in stack assembly. The study of noise problem in stacking is required to secure the safety and performance improvement of PEMFC stack. The design parameters in the Taguchi method are selected so that the structural responses are insensitive to the noise factors. In the gasket analysis, a Mooney-Rivlin strain energy function is used to consider hyperelasticity between load and displacement. By uni-axial and equi-biaxial tension tests of the gasket, the material properties are determined for the use in robust design of PEMFC gasket. The robust design of the PEMFC stack may provide structural reliability.

  • A new model for describing the behavior of clay under monotonic and cyclic loading is proposed. This model uses the hyperbolic representation for the stress -strain relationship in overconsolidated state and it describes undrained effective stress path on the basis of the critical state theory. The developed constitutive model by using an energy dissipation equation can describe the behavior of clay in heavily overconsolidated state as u.ell as lightly overconsolidated state under monotonic loading. In order to extend the model for the behavior of clay under cyclic loading, a shift function of undrained stress spacing ratio is introduced in the constitutive model developed for monotonlc loading. A single additional parameter is required to represent the cyclic effect and it can be reasonably deter mined from the test results. The measured behavior in undrained cyclic triaxial tests has been easily and precisely predicted by the newly developed constitutive model.
