Effects of Cyclic Thermal Load on the Signal Characteristics of FBG Sensors Packaged with Epoxy Adhesives (주기적인 반복 열하중이 패키징된 FBG 센서 신호 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Fiber optics sensors that have been mainly applied to aerospace areas are now finding applicability in other areas, such as transportation, including railways. Among the sensors, the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have led to a steep increase due to their properties of absolute measurement and multiplexing capability. Generally, the FBG sensors adhere to structures and sensing modules using adhesives such as an epoxy. However, the measurement errors that occurred when the FBG sensors were used in a long-term application, where they were exposed to environmental thermal load, required calibration. For this reason, the thermal curing of adhesives needs to be investigated to enhance the reliability of the FBG sensor system. This can be done at room temperature through cyclic thermal load tests using four types of specimens. From the test results, it is confirmed that residual compressive strain occurs to the FBG sensors due to an initial cyclic thermal load. In conclusion, signals of the FBG sensors need to be stabilized for applying them to a long-term SHM.

Plasticity and Fracture Behaviors of Marine Structural Steel, Part V: Effects of Strain Rate and Temperature (조선 해양 구조물용 강재의 소성 및 파단 특성 V: 온도 의존성을 고려한 변형률 속도에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This is the fifth in a series of companion papers dealing with the dynamic hardening properties of various marine structural steels at intermediate strain rates. Five steps of strain rate levels (0.001, 1, 10, 100, 200/s) and three steps of temperature levels (LT ($-40^{\circ}C$), RT, and HT ($200^{\circ}C$)) were taken into account for the dynamic tensile tests of three types of marine structural steels: API 2W50 and Classifications EH36 and DH36. The total number of specimens was 180 pieces. It was seen that the effects of dynamic hardening became clearer at LT than at RT. Dynamic strain aging accompanying serrated flow stress curves was also observed from high temperature tests for all kinds of steels. The dynamic hardening factors (DHFs) at the two temperature levels of LT and RT were derived at the three plastic strain levels of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 from dynamic tensile tests. Meanwhile, no DHFs were found for the high temperature tests because a slight negative strain rate dependency due to dynamic strain aging had occurred. A new formulation to determine material constant D in a Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation is provided as a function of the plastic strain rate, as well as the plastic strain level. The proposed formula is verified by comparing with test flow stress curves, not only at intermediate strain rate ranges but also at high strain rate ranges.

  • The drive shaft of passenger vehicle has an important role in transmitting the torque between the power train system and the wheels. Torsional fatigue failures occur generally in the connection parts of the spline edge of the drive shaft, when there is significant fatigue damage under repeated twisting loads. A heat treatment, an induction hardening process, has been adopted to increase the torsional strength as well as the fatigue life of the drive shaft. However, it is still unclear how the extension of the induction hardening process in a used material relates to its shear-strain fatigue life range. In this study, a shear-strain controlled torsional-fatigue test with a specially designed specimen was conducted by an electro-dynamic torsional fatigue test machine. A finite element analysis of the drive shaft was carried out using the results obtained by the fatigue experiment. The estimated fatigue life was verified through a twisting load test of the real drive shaft in a test rig.

  • Fiber is an important ingredient in strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC), which can control fracture of cementitious composite by bridging action. The properties of reinforcing fiber, as tensile strength, aspect ratio and elastic modulus, have great effect on the fracture behavior of SHCC. But SHCC has serious problem as drying shrinkage because silica powder is used to make SHCC in order to improve bond strength between reinforcing fibers and cement matrix. Therefore, curing method (period and temperature) is very important for SHCC to show high tensile performance. a variety of experiments have being performed to access the performance of SHCC recently. This research emphasis is on the mechanical properties of SHCC made in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Polyethylene (PE) fibers and steel cord (SC), and how curing method affects the composite property, and ultimately its strain-hardening performance.

  • In the non-linear behavior of many materials, there is difference between the monotonic behavior by static load and the cyclic behavior by cyclic load. In particular, the short fatigue cracks to propagate in elasto-plastic stress concentrations(notches), are governed significantly by the cyclic behavior of materials. Accordingly, it is needed to investigate and compare the monotonic and cyclic behavior of materials. In the pressent study, the stress-strain relations of materials by monotonic and cyclic load tests were examined for 2 kinds of steels(SS41, HT80) and 5 kinds of Al-alloys(A5083-O, A6N01-T5, A7N01-T4, A7016-T6, A7178-T6). And the constants for mechanical properties of the materials were determined by experimental results, Moreover, when a notch was subjected to cyclic load, the effect of cyclic hardening property of materials on the variation of stress-strain amplitude in the notch tip was discussed by the application of Neuber's rule and experiments for a center notched plate.

Measurement of effective cure shrinkage of EMC using dielectric sensor and FBG sensor (유전 센서 및 광섬유 센서를 이용한 EMC 유효 경화 수축 측정)

  • Recently, as the thickness of the semiconductor package becomes thinner, warpage has become a major issue. Since the warpage is caused by differences in material properties between package components, it is essential to precisely evaluate the material properties of the EMC(Epoxy molding compound), one of the main components, to predict the warpage accurately. Especially, the cure shrinkage of the EMC is generated during the curing process, and among them, the effective cure shrinkage that occurs after the gelation point is a key factor in warpage. In this study, the gelation point of the EMC was defined from the dissipation factor measured using the dielectric sensor during the curing process similar with actual semiconductor package. In addition, DSC (Differential scanning calorimetry) test and rheometer test were conducted to analyze the dielectrometry measurement. As a result, the dielectrometry was verified to be an effective method for monitoring the curing status of the EMC. Simultaneously, the strain transition of the EMC during the curing process was measured using the FBG (Fiber Bragg grating) sensor. From these results, the effective cure shrinkage of the EMC during the curing process was measured.

  • In a plastic metal forming of thermally rate-sensitive material, the localized shear band stems from evolution of a narrow region in which intensive plastic flow occurs. And it give rise to fatal fracture with plastic instability. The objectives of this study are to investigate the localization behavior by using numerical method and predict the failure for WHA(Tungsten Heavy Alloy). In this work, the implicit finite difference scheme is used because of the advantage about convergence and the numerical stability. This study is based on an analysed material with hardening as well as thermally softening behavior which includes isotropic strain hardening and observed the extension of localization within shear band according to material properties.

  • Austenite stainless steel(ASS), aluminum alloy and nickel steel alloy are the most widely used in many cryogenic applications due to superior mechanical properties at low temperature. The Face-Centered Cubic(FCC) and Hexagonal Close-Packed(HCP) materials are used for the primary and secondary insulation barrier of Liquefied Natural Gas(LNG) carrier tank and various kinds of LNG applications currently. In this study, tensile tests of ASS, aluminum alloy and nickel steel alloy were carried out for the acquisition of quantitative mechanical properties under the cryogenic environment. The range of thermal condition was room temperature to $-163^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range was 0.00016/s to 0.01/s considering the dependencies of temperatures and strain rates. The comprehensive test data were analyzed in terms of the characteristics of mechanical behavior for the development of constitutive equation and its application.

  • A set of constitutive equations is formulated to predict elastic-plastic strain hardening response of sintered porous iron under combined tension and torsion. The proposed constitutive equations were capable of predicting characteristic behaviors of porous metals. Agreement between theoretical curves and experimental data for elastic-plastic response of sintered porous iron was very good for various initial porosities.

  • The paper presents the application of FE simulations of NATM tunnel using different constitutive models. The results from a series of two dimensional plane strain finite element analyses of medium-liner interaction for NATM are presented. Four types of constitutive models are considered, namely, linear elastic, elasto-plastic Mohr-Coulomb, Hardening-Soil, Soft-Soil model. The design for tunnels requires a proper estimate of surface settlement and lining forces. It is shown that the advanced constitutive model gives better predictions for both ground movement and structural forces.
