  • The purpose of this study is to present an analysis method for the prediction of the changes m ground conditions. To this end, three dimensional convergence displacements are analyzed in several ways to estimate the trend of displacement changes. Three-dimensional arching effect is occurred around the unsupported excavation surface including tunnel face when a tunnel is excavated in a stable rock mass. If the ground condition ahead of tunnel face changes or a weak zone exists, a diagnostic trend of displacement change is observed by the 3 dimensional measurement and numerical analysis. Therefore, the change of ground condition and the existence of a weak zone ahead of tunnel face can be predicted by monitoring 3-dimensional absolute displacements during excavation, and applying the methodology (the ratio of L/C, $C/C_o$, etc.) presented in this study.

  • Load tests for fourteen small-scale foundation models combined with geotextile, sand mat and rigid mat were conducted to study the effect of geotextile(G/T), sand mat(S/M), and foundation types on deformation of foundation soils. In addition, the experimental results were compared with those obtained from numerical analysis using a software program. The main conclusions were summarized as follows: 1. The restraint effect on G/T is more outstanding on the lateral displacement than on the vertical one. 2. The single use of S/M has better effect on the restraint of vertical displacement than lateral one. 3. The use of both S/M and G/T is required for the restraint of lateral and vertical displacement. 4. Multi-layered foundation with large rigidity shows similar tendency to that of foundation reinforced with S/M and G/T.

  • The George Massey immersed tunnel passes the Fraser River near Vancouver, Western Canada. The tunnel was founded on sandy soils and its behavior during earthquake was analyzed by an effective stress constitutive model called UBCSAND. This model is able to calculate pore pressure rise and resulting tunnel movements due to cyclic loading. Centrifuge tests conducted at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) were used to verify the model performance. The centrifuge tests consisted of 2 models: Model 1 was designed for an original ground condition, Model 2 for a ground improvement by densification. In Model 1, large deformation of the tunnel was observed due to liquefaction of surrounding soil. Because of the densified zones around the tunnel the vertical and horizontal displacements of the tunnel in Model 2 was 50% less than Model 1. Measured excess pore pressures, accelerations, and displacements from centrifuge tests were in close agreement with the predictions of UBCSAND model. Therefore, the model can be used to predict seismic behavior of immersed tunnels on sandy soils and optimize liquefaction remediation methods.

  • Empirical seismic displacement equations based on the Newmark sliding block method are widely used to develop seismic landslide hazard map. Most proposed equations have been developed for embankments and landfills, and do not consider the dynamic response of sliding block. Therefore, they cannot be applied to Korean mountain slopes composed of thin, uniform soil-layer underlain by an inclined bedrock parallel to the slope. In this paper, a series of two-dimensional dynamic nonlinear finite difference analyses were performed to estimate the permanent seismic slope displacement. The seismic displacement of mountain slopes was calculated using the Newmark method and the equivalent acceleration time history. The calculated seismic displacements of the mountain slopes were compared to a widely used empirical displacement model. We show that the displacement prediction is significantly enhanced if the slope is modeled as a flexible sliding mass and the amplification characteristics are accounted for. Regression equation, which uses PGA, PGV, Arias intensity of the ground motion and the fundamental period of soil layer, is shown to provide a reliable estimate of the sliding displacement. Furthermore, the empirical equation is shown to reliably predict the hazard category.

  • Displacement of tunnel face is important issues for the evaluation of tunnel safety. In this study, conventional convergence and displacement data measured from horizontal inclinometer were analyzed to investigate the trend and characteristics of tunnel deformation during construction. Trend of measured displacement agreed with general understanding of tunnel deformation prior to excavation. It shows that displacement measured from horizontal inclinometer can be used to preestimate the total deformation of tunnel.

  • A three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed to predict the location of a fault zone ahead of a tunnel face based on convergence displacement. Geometrical models for the numerical analysis were developed based on the possible geometric intersection between the fault zone and the tunnel. Fifteen fault models were generated from combinations of faults with five different strikes (at $15^{\circ}$ intervals) and three dips (vertical, $45^{\circ}$ and $-45^{\circ}$) relative to the tunnel route. The displacements on the crown and side walls were calculated and analyzed using a vector orientation approach. As a result, nine representative prediction charts were developed, showing location and orientation of the fault zone based on convergence displacement.

  • In the present study, artificial neural network based on the multi-layer perceptron is used and an optimum model is chosen through the process of efficiency evaluation in order to develop a system predicting maximum displacements of the earth retaining walls at various excavation stages. By analyzing the measured field data collected at various urban excavation sites in Korea, factors influencing on the behaviors of the excavation wall are examined. Among the measured data collected, reliable data are further selected on the basis of the performance ratio and are used as a data base. Data-based measurements are also utilized for both teaming and verifying the artificial neural network model. The learning is carried out by using the back-propagation algorithm based on the steepest descent method. Finally, to verify a validity of the formulated artificial neural network system, both the magnitude and the occurring position of the maximum horizontal displacement are predicted and compared with measured data at real excavation sites not included in the teaming process.

  • In the back analysis of braced excavation based on displacement measurements, the accumulated errors of abnormal displacement caused by unexpected loads are usually observed. To minimize such errors, in this study, displacement increment was used fur back analysis rather than displacement for the conventional method. That is, the increment of sequential displacement is used as the objective function and the back analysis program is developed by taking advantage of sequential linear programming method by modified method of feasible directions. Based on small scale model test, the analysis of proposed method is verified.

  • A new treatment is proposed to handle a deflection limit in the open-loop-onset-point (OLOP), which is commonly used in the prediction of pilot in-the-loop oscillation (PIO) due to a rate saturation. The new approach is motivated by the frequency response of a stand-alone actuator in that, unlike the suggestion by the original OLOP procedure, the rate limit onset is not delayed to a higher frequency by a deflection limit. Indeed, if a feedback control loop is closed, the rate limit onset can be shifted to a lower frequency since the controller tends to react with larger commands when deflection limited. The amplitude of the command at this onset frequency is combined with the deflection limit to estimate the associated gain reduction in the open-loop-onset-point in the final step of the OLOP process. The comparison of the new approach with the previous method reveals that an inaccurate optimism which can occur in the previous method is corrected by the proposed treatment.
