  • New formulas to determine the critical elastic buckling load of long tapered columns are given. This study is restricted to solid round or rectangular columns with fixed-free ends as often used in highway design. The exact solution of the differential equation of the deflection curve is expressed in terms of Bessel Function and the solution is numerically evaluated using Bisection method by computer. In the F.E.M analysis of columns under their own weight, the stability problem can be resulted in a eigen value problem of conservative system. Approximate solution by the F.E.M is evaluted numerically using Jacobi method and compared with exact solution of the prismatic column to increase the precision. In addition, critical buckling load of the tapered column for every shape factor and ratio of cross-sectional change (Diameter of bottom end/Diameter of upper end) was converted into a comparable expression to critical buckling load of the prismatic column.

  • The cases of collapse of greenhouses in rural areas have been increasing due to the unexpected heavy snow load. Studies on how to prevent the collapse of greenhouses are rare, however, and the damages are repeated annually. This studysuggests two reinforcing methods: the use of ahigh-strength tapered module, and the addition of a pre-tension tie. The high-strength tapered section is installed where the bending moment is maximum. The design of a plastic greenhouse is controlled by its strength rather than its deflection. The shape of a greenhouse resembles that of an arch system, but its actual structural behavior is the frame behavior, because it is non-continually composed of a curved element (a beam) and vertical elements (columns). This system is too weak and slender to resist a vertical load, because an external load is resisted by the moment rather than by axial force. In this study, a new method, the installation of a temporary tie at the junction of the arch and the column only during snow accumulation, is proposed. The tie changes the action of the greenhouse frame to an arch action. The arch action is more effective when the pre-tension force is applied in the tie, which results in a very strong temporary structural system during snowfall. As a result of using this high-strength tapered section, the combined strength ratio of what? decreased from 10% to 30%. In the case of the additional reinforcement with a tie, it was reduced by half.

  • In this study, the behavior of Pile-Bent structure with varying diameters subjected to lateral loads were evaluated by a load transfer approach. An analytical method based on the beam-column model and nonlinear load transfer curve method was proposed to consider material non-linearity (elastic, yielding) and P-${\Delta}$ effect. For an effective analysis of behavior Pile-Bent structure, the bending moment and fracture lateral load of material were evaluated. And special attention was given to lateral behavior of Pile-Bent structures depending on reinforcing effect of materials and ground conditions. Based on the parametric study, it is shown that the maximum bending moment is located within a depth (plastic hinge) approximately 1~3D (D: pile diameter) below ground surface when material non-linearity and P-${\Delta}$ effect are considered. And distribution of the lateral deflections and bending moments on a pile are highly influenced by the effect of yielding. It is also found that this method considering material yielding behavior and P-${\Delta}$ effect can be effectively used to perform the preliminary design of Pile-bent structures.

  • This research area is a greate section of triple tunnels that passes through the fault fractured zone the in the granite area. In this area, tunnel section, pillar width and overburden height are changed consecutively due to declivity of 1 : 4.5 and slope formation of upper part as changed section. That is, stability estimation for each section varying pillar width can be conducted because tunnel diameter changes gradually from 0.5D to 1.0D according to distance of pillar width. We have estimated the stability of pillar width in triple tunnels with monitoring value, and compared the stability with results of numerical analysis.

  • Plate girders with variable depths have been often used at piers considering not only the economy but also an aesthetic aspect. Tapered plate girders exhibit more complicated behaviors than prismatic girders especially under shear. However, a comprehensive design method for the determination of the shear strength has yet to be developed mainly due to lack of study. In this study, investigated is the buckling and ultimate behaviors of tapered plate girders subjected to shear through finite element analyses. From the analysis results, a simple design formula is suggested for the evaluation of the shear strength of tapered plate girders.

  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the tapered beams with the constant surface area. The surface area of the objective beams are always held constant regardless shape functions of the cross-sectional depth. The shape functions are chosen as the linear and parabolic ones. Ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of such beams are derived and solved numerically for determining the natural frequencies. In the numerical examples, hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. As the numerical results, the relationships between non-dimensional frequency parameters and various beam parameters such as section ratio, surface area ratio, end constraint and taper type are reported in tables and figures. Especially, section ratios of the strongest beam are calculated, under which the maximum frequencies are achieved.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of stepped cantilever columns with a tip mass of rotatory inertia and a translational spring at one end. The column model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibration of columns with stepwise variable cross-section and subjected to a subtangential follower force is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. And the bisection method is used to calculate the critical divergence/flutter load. The frequency and critical divergence/flutter load for the stepped column with a single step are presented as functions of various non-dimensional system parameters: the segmental length parameter, the section ratio, the subtangential parameter, the mass, the moment of inertia of the mass, and the spring parameter.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present the buckling loads of tapered columns due to dynamic concept. The ordinary differential equation governing the bucking loads for tapered columns is derived on the basis of dynamic concept. Three kinds of cross sectional shape are considered in the governing equation. The Improved Euler method and Determinant Search method are used to perform the integration of the differential equation and to determine the buckling loads, respectively. The hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, clamped-clamped and free-clamped end constraints are applied in numerical examples. The buckling loads are reported as the function of section ratio, and the effects of cross-sectional shapes are investigated. The buckling load equation, which are fitted by numerical data, are proposed as a function of section ratio. It is expected that these equations can be utilized in structural engineering field.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the free vibration characteristics of tapered beams with general boundary condition(translational and rotational elastic support) at one end and carrying a tip mass with translational elastic support at the other end. The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered beams is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are compared with existing solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The lowest four natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of section ratio, dimensionless spring constant and mass ratio.

  • The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of stepped non-circuiar arches are derived as nondimensional forms including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation. The governing equations are solved numerically to obtain frequencies and mode shapes. The lowest four natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated for the stepped parabolic arches with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. A wide range of arch rise to span length ratios, slenderness ratios, section ratios, and discontinuous sector ratios are considered. The effect of rotatory inertia and shear deformation on natural frequencies is reported. Typical mode shapes of vibrating arches are also presented.
