  • It is extremely crucial in academic researches to clarify exact spellings and original contents of the works under analysis. In the case of Sijo, the works in different collections of poems with the same title prove to have been transformed in its spellings and expressions through the long period. Therefore it has been a very important step which should be taken prior to a research of Sijo that spellings and expressions of those works be compared and checked. In this point of view, I believe the book titled A Full Collection of Sijo. Yokdae Sijojunseo, written by me can be of great help to identify the expressions and contents. Moreover this book enables us to check authors and melodies of the works. This is a study on the aspects and phases of transformation of an original work by examining 'Eobusasisa'. The findings are the following: first of all, the number of collections including 'Eobusasisa' is unexpectedly small; secondly, how the original work was transformed and modified in various collections. A representative collection including 'Eobusasisa' as a transformed style into Sijo is Haedonggayo, where 38 poems out of 40 of 'Eobusasisa' are collected. All the modifications and changes have been checked in this study. To sum up, it is very important to compare the variations of a Sijo work with each other. It enables us to check up and to identify the writers, spellings, expressions, and melodies.

  • Jangan-sa is one of the Buddhist temples in the southeastern seaside district, which was restored directly after the termination of Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Recently we could find out 4 records on the constructions of Daeoong - jeon in J angan-sa. These are written in the 12th year of Emperor Soonchi, written in the 8th year of Emperor Geonryung, written in 1947 Buddha Era and written in 1951 Buddha Era. Until the revelation of these records, the present building has been considered to be built in 1657, the 8th year of King Hyojong, based upon Kim Bang - han's "Jangan - sa Daeoong - jeon - gi". Because the gongpo of Daeoong - jeon was finished with the type of the late period of Chosun Dynasty, we doubt of the correction on it's building date, just in the year of 1657. Now we are able to examine the building date and the alteration date, based upon the actual measurement and constructional records of Daeoong - jeon. So to speak, the building destroyed in 1592, had been restored in 1658, the 9th year of King Hyojong and was reconstructed in 1744, the 20th year of King Youngjo. Afterward it was repaired on small scales in 1947 and in 1951. Though this building is considered to be lack of the completeness owing to the later alterations, it is still worthy heritage for the research on the building type at the directly after the termination of Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592.

  • Ahn Minyoung's editorial work of gajib(songbook) was the work for realization of artistic ability which had been a pursuit for his life. According to recent excavation of 'Seungpyeonggok' that is another gajib editted by Ah Minyoung, it is found that his editorial work of gajib was began in earlier days. 'Seungpyeonggok' composes 12 pieces of works, and it arranged each piece of work with melody of gagok, respectively. For the size, it is evaluated to 'the smallest gajib' among the left gajib at present. This gajib was composed to celebrate the gathering of Seungpyeonggye which led by Ahn Minyoung. There is Preface which was written by Ahn Minyoung, and the content of preface could be similar to the one in his another gajib 'Geumokchongbu' except some omission, variation, or alternation of content and phrase partly to fit for the character of each gajib. The names of Seungpyeonggye's members are shown in the preface of 'Seungpyeonggok', so it is important material for studying the appearances and activities of the members at that time. The purpose and intention of Seungpyeonggye's gathering was clarified in the preface of 'Seungpyeonggok' was composed to the repertoir of gagok sung at the celebration party. All the collected works are related to Daewongun directly or indirectly in their contents. Because the celebration party of Seungpyeonggye was designed for Daewongun, all the contents are dedication for Dasewongun easily. And the works of 12-pieces previously discussed were found as playing repertoir, 'type of pyeon-ga' which was composed to 8-pieces and 4-pieces identically.

  • Jasan An Whak did research on the essence of Sijo to show that Sijo has some features as a literature. I tried to show the formation process of Sijo theory in 1930s through Jasan's Sijo theory. As a preparatory step for it, I introduced Jasan's Sijo theory released in early 1930s and examined the characteristic aspects of it. Jasan recognized a literature as a directing post that reveals the history of our national spirit. He thought a literature as a foundation for satisfying new age. Also, he recognized the essence of a literature as a emotional expression. He emphasized that a new literature in Joseon age should have not only particularity of Joseon literature but also universality of modern literature. Jasan studied style of Sijo. Because he was at the time of modernization, he used the term, 'style', instead of 'poongkyeok', which had used before modern time. He tried to show linguistic artistry of Sijo through the series of his works about the style of Sijo. Jasan tried to find formal beauty of Sijo in the aspect of rhythm instead of rhyme. And he claimed that poetic words can be lengthened or shortened to be harmonious with the melody of Sijo. In other words, it is possible to change the words of Sijo for harmonizing with a tune. Jasan recognized that the words of Sijo have a musical function as well as a semantic function.

  • The first Protestant medical missionary, Horace Allen, came to Korea in 1884 and built the first western-style hospital, Jaejungwon. John Heron, Oliver Avison and other foreign medical doctors soon followed. They established hospitals and medical schools, and, by treating patients and educating native doctors, they disseminated and developed modern medicine in Korea. At the same time, they wrote letters and reports to their sponsoring agencies, as well as family and friends, thereby leaving a vast body of literature that is scattered all over the world. Since the end of the 19th century, the records left by foreign medical missionaries have been valuable resources for the study of Korean history. While all types of records, such as diaries, memoirs, reports and travel logs, are available, these tend to be exaggerated or unverifiable because they are unilateral records. In contrast, letters can be verified because they are bilateral records between the recipient and the sender, and cannot be modified or altered according to changes in circumstances. Despite the academic value of these materials, however, there have been insufficient efforts to discover or identify these primary data sources, or to systematically organize them for scholars. This paper identified 49 archival collections from 29 institutions in North America. After analyzing their academic value, the paper will explore digital humanities options in utilizing the letters for future scholarship.

  • Today, in the case of literary works such as modern poetry, novels, 'literature production : literature acceptance' are relatively simple as 'writing : reading'. However, in classical literature, there are ways of 'singing, chanting, narrating, performing, public reading, writing : listening, reading.' Modern literary works such as poetry and novels are sole arts made up only of literature, but classical literature have many complex arts accompanied by music, theater, etc. In order to understand the way classical literature, it is necessary to consider music, theater, etc. also. There are a number of subjects to research today in relation to the accepting method of classical literature. There are such things at Hyang-ga (향가), Goryeo Sog-yo (고려속요), Sijo (시조) and Gasa (가사) in of classical poetry. There is a public reading in classical novels. There is securing video materialㄴ for narrators in oral literature. And there are Si-chang (시창. 詩唱) and aloud reading in chinese proses. 'Listening literature', such as the oral literature needs to have the A. Lord's 'formular theory' - 'formular' (general words), 'themes' (general subject), and 'improvisation.' It is the opposite of contemporary poetry and novels that value ' special words', 'special contents', and 'original text.' Classical literature with a great deal of 'listening literature' besides ' reading literature' needs to have this 'formular theory' too basically. In the case of 'excessive pornographic' oriented events in Goryeo Gayo (고려가요) and Pansori (판소리), a vision is required to set up a space for the realization of literature. The haman basic elements like a man and woman's body subject can be evoked as a literature means at open place for anonymous people. Unlike modern poetry and novels, which are 'reading literature', and contain only literature, classical literature have 'listening literature' besides 'reading literature', and have complex arts - classical poetry (literature and music), and oral literature (literature, music, theater etc.) These aspects are available to research modern mass media literature, which are all 'listening literature,' and all complex arts - pop songs (literature and music), movies (literature, drama, image, music etc.) and TV dramas (literature, drama, image, music etc.). Thus, a proper understanding and consideration of the accepting method is very important in understanding, researching and educating classical literature.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of learning methods for education to transmit the items designated as intangible cultural heritages focusing on Seoul-gut. Recently, as the Act on the Preservation and Promotion of Intangible Cultural Heritages was promulgated, 'the archetype' instead of 'the prototype' has become highlighted as a crucial axis for transmission. Although there are some controversies over the definition of the archetype among scholars, it is now possible for transmitters to make use of transformations rather freely being freed from strict orientation to the prototype to follow some fixed frame. Examining learning methods used in education to transmit mudang-gut, one of the items designated as intangible cultural heritages, however, this author has found that the prototype is still emphasized or in the center of learning instead. Presenting learning methods employed for Hwanghaedopyeongsansonoreum-gut of a national intangible cultural heritage, Namijanggunsadang-gut of Seoul Special City's intangible cultural heritage, and Bonghwasandodang-gut as examples, this researcher intends to reveal the reality. In the recent situation that education centering around academies is being widely spread to transmit mudang-gut, setting forth the designation of some of the items as intangible cultural heritages, they are publishing articles on newspaper as an advertisement to encourage learning about mudang-gut. Responding to the advertisement, there are more and more shamans intending to learn mudang-gut coming to the society for preserving items designated as intangible cultural heritages. They can, of course, perform mudang-gut on their own but come to learn it as there is no fixed or definite system for it. Even though the concept of the archetype was introduced, as now it is possible to learn the fixed frame through learning about the prototype regarding the item of mudang-gut as an intangible cultural heritage, those involved in shamanism are coming to it more and more. As transmitting the prototype rather deteriorated the liveliness of gut, those involved in shamanism are coming to it to learn about gut thinking that it is where they can learn the basic frame and also acquire more detailed knowledge about shamanism. Therefore, it is needed for the item of mudang-gut designated as an intangible cultural heritage to accept the aspects of change and develop new methods of education to transmit intangible cultural heritages.
