Glyceria declinata, 'Yu-Reop-Yuk-Jeol-Bo-Ri-Pul', was found along the Seomjin River, Gurye-eup, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, as well as along the Gwangjucheon River, Sa-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju. It is distinguished from G. acutiflora by spikelets 15-20mm long and obtuse lemma. Puccinellia distans, "Cheo-Jin-Mi-Kku-Ri-Gwang-I", was found in Yeongjong Island, Incheon, Yongyu Island, Incheon and Chojijin, Ganghwa-gun. It is distinguished from P. nipponica by lemmas 1.8-2.5mm long, ligule 1-2mm long and the lower branches of panicle usually reflexed after anthesis.

  • Korean Poaceae includes approximately 80 species of the agricultural weeds. Precise species identification is the first step for more effective weed management in the agricultural fields. However, the identification of species in Poaceae is not easy without the assistance of taxonomists or identification experts although they are relatively easy to distinguish from the plants of the other family by the unique characteristics of caryopsis. Thus, DNA barcode was suggested as an alternative powerful technique for species identification by using short sections of DNA from a specific region of the genome. Two standard barcode markers of vascular plants, chloroplast rbcL and matK, and a supplementary nuclear ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region were used for barcode of major Korean Poaceae weeds, 403 individuals of 84 taxa. All the barcode markers revealed a good level of sequencing success with the lowest 73.7% for matK and the highest 88.8% for rbcL. The barcode sequences were deposited to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database for public use. Combined matK and ITS showed very high resolving power with 92.9%. Besides the identification of weeds for weed managment, the generated DNA barcode data could be used for many other applications such as rapid biodiversity assessment and conservation prioritization.

  • Echinochloa oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch (Na-do-non-pee), was found at paddy fields of Jeonranamdo on a large scale after a first discovery at Masan, Kyeongsangnamdo. This species was not easily distinguished from rice before flowering at the paddy field because of a similar morphology to rice. It is, however, distinguished from other species of the Korean Echinochloa by reliable morphological characters such as horizontal or drooping panicles at maturity, lower glumes with usually 1/4-2/5 as long as the spikelets, awned lower lemmas, and the number of chromosomes, 2n = 54. Echinochloa oryzicola (Vasinger) Vasinger was distinguished from E. oryzoides by erect panicles, lower glumes with at least 1/2 as long as the spikelets, and the number of chromosomes, 2n = 36.

  • Two unrecorded Poaceae species, Anthoxanthum glabrum and Saccharum arundinaceum, are herein newly reported from Korea. Anthoxanthum glabrum (Ae-Gi-Hyang-Mo) was found in Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do, Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do. It is distinguished from A. nitens by the length of its spikelet, glume and lemma. Saccharum arundinaceum (Keun-Gae-Sa-Tang-Su-Su) was found in Mapo-gu, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do. It is distinguished from S. spontaneum by hair on the lower glume and according to the length of the hair on the callus of its spikelet. In this study, a description and illustrations of the species and photos of the habitat are provided.

  • This study aims feeding habit of the Korean water deer(Hydropotes inermis argyropus) using a visual analysis of rumen contents of 44 individuals. The samples were collected from Cheorwon(Gangwon province) and the eastern part of Jeonnam province. Based on the analysis, a total of 15 orders, 18 families and 13 species were identified. Among them, Solanceae(53.8%) and Graminease(30.3%) showed the highest proportions. Plants of 13 orders, 15 families and 10 species were found and forbs(70.21%) and Solanceae(54.9%) were most preferred in Cheorwon. Eight orders, 7 families and 4 species were found in the Eastern parts of Jeonnam province, and Gramineae(78.6%) and woody plants(14.70%) was most preferred. Among four seasons, Gramineae in spring(80.6%) and autumn(68.8%), Leguminosae(75.9%) in summer, and Solanceae(85.4%) in winter were the highest proportions.

  • Phytoliths, silica microfossil that produced within and between cells and tissues of plants are especially yielded in Gramineae with many different forms and can attribute to the reconstruction of climatic and environmental changes and agriculture activity of the Quaternary. The phytoliths in soil can remain for long periods of time, because of strong resistance to physical and chemical weathering. The spatial range of study is too small due to deposition of phytoliths directly to the soil. There are difficulties of phytoliths identification because of multiplicity and redundancy, so far uniform and exact classification scheme has not been adopted. Therefore we attempted phytolith classification system applied to Korea. The paleoenvironmental reconstruction research using phytholith are applicated in many parts of studies. Also high-resolution paleoclimatic reconstruction expected to be possible using phytolith indices of Iph and Ic as well as climatic indicator of phytolith morphology.

  • An unrecorded alien species plant, Phalaris paradoxa L. (Poaceae) was found in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju island, Korea. It is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe, and it is currently found worldwide. Phalaris paradoxa is distinguishable from related taxa (P. arundinacea, P. canariensis, P. minor and P. arundinacea var. picta) in Korea by the following combination of characterstics: spikelets in clusters (the upper central fertile spikelet surrounded by six lower sterile spikelets), wing of the keel. This taxon was named 'Nal-gae-ca-na-ri-sae-pul' in Korean based on its character. We provide its description, illustrations, photographs and a key of related taxa in Korea.
