Development of Detection and Monitoring by Light Scattering in Real Time (광산란 방식 실시간 미세먼지 측정 및 모니터링 시스템 개발)

  • Extremely fine particles seriously affect people and are becoming a social problem. Conventional methods using the type of beta ray absorption are difficult to have real-time measurements and miniaturization for the acquisition of fine dust. In this paper, a light scattering method was used. The sensors were configured internally with semiconductor laser diodes for miniaturization, low cost and lightweight. The use of the FFT method makes it easier to separate fine dust according to size compared to conventional light scattering sensors. Bluetooth communication also allows the connection, monitoring and control of devices using smart phones.

Simulation of Beta Rays from Tritium with Cathode Rays (음극선을 이용한 삼중수소 베타선 모사)

  • Beta rays emitted from tritium in titanium tritide film were simulated with cathode rays of a scanning electron microscope to investigate the effect of beta rays from tritium on semiconductor devices. The cathode ray currents, which vary with the change of applied energy and beam spot size, were measured with Faraday cup. The current from the semiconductor device irradiated with cathode rays at various conditions was measured. The cathode ray current increased with the increase of spot size to a maximum then decreased when the spot sized increased further. The magnitude of current produced in the semiconductor device is proportional to the magnitude of cathode ray current. The magnitude of cathode ray current at each energy level was matched to the intensity of beta ray to simulate the tritium beta ray spectrum. Then the semiconductor characteristics were analyzed with I-V curves.

Analysis on Fluorine-18 Shielding Efficiency of Double Shield Apron using Acrylic (아크릴을 활용한 이중 차페 Apron의 F-18 차폐 효율 분석)

  • Fluorine-18 used in PET/CT scans is a radioactive isotope that emits positrons, and high energy annihilation gamma rays and beta rays cause exposure to radiation workers. In this study, as part of a plan to reduce the exposure dose of radiation workers working in the Department of Nuclear Medicine, the cause of the low shielding efficiency of Apron for F-18 was identified, and the effectiveness of the Apron double-shielded with acrylic was evaluated. L-Block, Apron+acrylic, Apron, Acrylic+Apron, and Acrylic five shields are used to measure the dose, and the tendencies were compared by performing a Monte Carlo simulation. As a result, it was found that the shielding rate of Apron double shielded with acrylic was about 4 to 8% higher than that of Apron single shielded. To the extent that it does not significantly affect the user's activity, double-shielded personal protective clothing with an appropriate acrylic thickness could help reduce radiation workers' exposure.

  • This study was conducted to develop a healthy functional food material using mycelial extract of Phellinus sp. Jangsoo and GMPL48007 were selected as suitable strains because of good mycelial growth and high functionality. The highest total polyphenols and reducing power were observed in the Jangsoo strain and the radical scavenging was shown in GMPL48007. Among grains media, whole-grain wheat had the highest extraction yield from mycelia of selected strains; especially, the GMPL48007 strain showed the highest content of beta-glucan.

Investigation of Scatter and Septal Penetration in I-131 Imaging Using GATE Simulation (GATE 시뮬레이션을 이용한 I-131 영상의 산란 및 격벽통과 보정방법 연구)

  • Scatter correction for I-131 plays a very important role to improve image quality and quantitation. I-131 has multiple and higher energy gamma-ray emissions. Image quality and quantitative accuracy in I-131 imaging are degraded by object scatter as well as scatter and septal penetration in the collimator. The purpose of this study was to estimate scatter and septal penetration and investigate two scatter correction methods using Monte Carlo simulation. The gamma camera system simulated in this study was a FORTE system (Phillips, Nederland) with high energy, general-purpose, parallel hole collimator. We simulated for two types of high energy collimators. One is composed of lead, and the other is composed of artificially high Z number and high density. We simulated energy spectrum using a point source in air. We estimated both full width at half maximum (FWHM) and full width at tenth maximum (FWTM) using line spread function (LSF) in cylindrical water phantom. We applied two scatter correction methods, triple energy window scatter correction (TEW) and extended triple energy window scatter correction (ETEW). The TEW method is a pixel-by pixel based correction which is easy to implement clinically. The ETEW is a modification of the TEW which corrects for scatter by using abutted scatter rejection window, which can overestimate or the underestimate scatter. The both FWHM and FWTM were estimated as 41.2 mm and 206.5 mm for lead collimator, respectively. The FWHM and FWTM were estimated as 27.3 mm and 45.6 mm for artificially high Z and high density collimator, respectively. ETEW showed that the estimation of scatter components was close to the true scatter components. In conclusion, correction for septal penetration and scatter is important to improve image quality and quantitative accuracy in I-131 imaging. The ETEW method in scatter correction appeared to be useful in I-131 imaging.

Development of shielding device for bremsstrahlung radiation from Y-90 microspheres (Y-90 microsphere 로부터 생성되는 제동복사선의 차폐를 위한 차폐체 개발 연구)

  • Purpose Yttrium-90 (Y-90) is high-energy beta emitters ($E{\beta}$, max = 2.28 MeV) with the mean penetration depth of 2.5 mm in tissue. Radioactive microspheres containing Y-90 is widely used for the transarterial radioembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma. However, bremsstrahlung radiation from Y-90 can cause the external radiation exposure to medical staff who handle the Y-90 microspheres. In this study, shielding device for Y-90 microspheres was developed to minimize the external radiation exposure. Materials and Methods Y-90 microsphere shielding device was made from 6 mm thicknesses of tungsten including the lead glass window. Radiation shielding ability of Y-90 microsphere shielding device was evaluated using 4 GBq of $SIR-Spheres^{(R)}$ Y-90 microspheres. The bremsstrahlung radiation was measured using radiation survey meter. Results The mean radiation dose of Y-90 microspheres in acrylic shield was $261.7{\pm}2.3{\mu}Sv/h$ (n=5) at 10 cm away from the shield. With the additional tungsten shielding device, it was $23.7{\pm}1.3{\mu}Sv/h$ (n=5). Thus, the bremsstrahlung radiation dose was decreased by 90.9%. At 50 cm away from the shield, bremsstrahlung radiation was reduced by 89.2% after using tungsten shielding device. Conclusion During the preparation and radioembolization of Y-90 microsphere, medical staff are exposed to external radiation. In this study, we demonstrated that the use of tungsten shielding device devices significantly reduced the amount of bremsstrahlung radiation. Y-90 microsphere tungsten shielding device can be highly effective in reducing the bremsstrahlung radiation.

Evaluation of friction of ceramic brackets in various bracket-wire combinations (브라켓 각도 변화에 따른 세라믹 브라켓의 마찰력 측정)

  • The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the level of frictional resistance generated from three currently used ceramic brackets; 1, Crystaline $V^{(R)}$, Tomy International Inc., Tokyo, Japan; 2, $Clarity^{(R)}$, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA; 3, $Inspire^{(R)}$, Ormco, Orange, CA, USA; with composite resin brackets, Spirit, Ormco, Orange, CA, USA; and conventional stainless steel brackets, Kosaka, Tomy International Inc., Tokyo, Japan used as controls. In this experiment, the resistance to sliding was studied as a function of four angulations $(0^{\circ},\;5^{\circ},\;10^{\circ}\;and\;15^{\circ})$ using 2 different orthodontic wire alloys: stainless steel (stainless steel, SDS Ormco, Orange, CA, USA), and beta-titanium (TMA, SDS Ormco, Orange, CA, USA). After mounting the 22 mil brackets to the fixture and $.019{\times}.025$ wires ligated with elastic ligatures, the arch wires were slid through the brackets at 5mm/min in the dry state at $34^{\circ}C$. Silica-insert ceramic brackets generated a significantly lower frictional force than did other ceramic brackets, similar to that of stainless steel brackets. Beta-titanium archwires had higher frictional resistance than did stainless steel, and all the brackets showed higher static and kinetic frictional force as the angulation increased. When the angulation exceeded $5^{\circ}$, the active configuration emerged and frictional force quickly increased by 2.5 to 4.5-fold. The order of frictional force of the different wire-bracket couples transposed as the angle increased. The silica-insert ceramic bracket is a valuable alternative to conventional stainless steel brackets for patients with esthetic demands.

Correlation of Executive Function and Quantitative Electroencephalography in Children and Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (주의력결핍 과잉행동장애 소아청소년의 실행기능과 정량화 뇌파의 상관성 연구)

  • Objectives : Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) is characterized by significant impairments in executive functions, with a prevalence of approximately 3-5% of all children worldwide. The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between executive functions and electrophysiological activities in children and adolescents with ADHD. Methods : In 31 patients with ADHD, resting-state EEG was recorded, and Comprehensive Attention Test(CAT), Stroop Color-Word Inference Test(Stroop CWIT), Trail Making Test(TMT), and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test(CST) were administered. Korean version of the ADHD Rating Scale(K-ARS) was assessed. Results : Alpha and beta power positively correlated with the Attention Quotient(AQ), while delta power negatively correlated with AQ from CAT. In the Stroop CWIT, decreased delta power and increased beta power were related to higher performance. Power of the alpha band increased with higher TMT performance. Moreover, delta power negatively correlated with good performance on the CST, while alpha and high gamma band showed a positive correlation. Correlation with the parent-rating of ADHD symptoms showed a negative correlation between alpha power and higher scores on the K-ARS. Conclusions : These findings indicate that relative power in higher frequency bands of EEG is related to the higher executive function in children and adolescents with ADHD, while the association with the relative power in lower frequency bands of EEG seem to be vice versa. Furthermore, the findings suggest that QEEG may be a useful adjunctive tool in assessing patients with ADHD.

Experimental study on Characteristics of Secondary Flow in Meandering Channels (사행수로에서 2차류 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • 자연하천과 같은 사행수로에서 발생하는 이차류는 흐름 분포를 왜곡시킴으로써, 유사이동, 하상과 제방침식, 하천의 지형변형 등에 매우 큰 영향을 미치게 된다. 또한, 이차류는 주 흐름방향에 수직으로 발생하기 때문에 자연하천에 유입된 오염물의 횡방향 혼합에도 지대한 역할을 한다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 사행수로에서 이차류의 특성을 정량적으로 분석하고자 중심각이 $120^{\circ}$인 두 개의 만곡부로 이루어진 사행수로에서 실험을 수행하였다. 실험수로는 직사각형 단면과 자연형 단면 두 가지 형태로 제작하였으며, 자연형 단면 하상은 베타함수를 이용하여 제작하였다. 이차류의 정확한 측정을 위해 3차원 유속측정 장치인 micro-ADV를 이용하였다. 실험조건으로는 직사각형 단면과 자연형 단면에서 평균수심과 유량을 달리하여 실험을 총 12회 수행하였다. 실험결과, 직사각형 단면수로에서의 주 흐름의 최대유속선은 수로의 가장 짧은 경로를 따라 발생하였는데, 이는 Shiono와 Muto (1998)의 결과와 일치한다. 자연형 단면 수로에서의 주 흐름은 직사각형 단면 수로에서의 주 흐름 거동과 비슷한 양상을 보였다. 이것은 실제 자연하천 만곡부에서의 주흐름 거동(최대유속선이 최심선을 따라 발생)과는 상이한 결과였다. 그 첫째 원인은 실험수로의 조도가 일반적인 실제하천의 조도를 상사법칙에 맞게 계산한 값보다 작았기 때문이다. 그리고 두 번째 원인은 실험수로의 하폭대 수심비율은 실제하천의 하폭대 수심비율보다 컸기 때문인 것으로 사료된다. 이차류의 정량적인 분석을 위해 각 측정지점별로 횡방향, 수심방향 유속을 그려본 결과, 직사각형 단면에서는 하나의 셀이 존재하는 반면에 자연형 단면에서는 셀이 두개 존재함을 알 수 있었다. 이는 자연하천에서도 발견되는 현상이다. 실제 자연하천에서는 주 셀이 바깥제방 셀보다 큰 형태를 보이지만, 실험수의에서의 셀의 형태는 주 셀보다 바깥제방 셀이 더 크게 발생하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이는 앞서 언급한 바와 같이 조도가 작음으로 인한 것으로 판단된다. 이차류 강도를 계산한 결과, 직사각형 단면 수로의 최대값은 두 번째 만곡 유입부지점(U2)에서 가장 크게 나타났으며. 자연형 단면 수로에서 최대값은 두 번째 만곡을 조금 지난 (U4)지점에서 가장 크게 나타났다. 자연형 단면에서는 하폭 대 수심비가 커질수록 이차류강도가 크게 나왔으나, 직사각형 단면에서는 반대로 나왔다. 그리고, 자연형 단면의 이차류 강도는 직사각형 단면보다 크게 나타났다. 특히, 직사각형 단면의 이차류강도는 첫 번째 만곡부분보다 두 번째 만곡부분이 더 크게 나타나는 현상만 보였지만, 자연형 단면의 이차류 강도는 앞서 언급한 특징 외에 만곡부에서 증가하고, 직선부에서 감소하는 주기적인 형태를 보였다.

The Effects of 8-week Ketone Body Supplementation on Endurance Exercise Performance and Autophagy in the Skeletal Muscle of Mice (8주 케톤체 투여가 마우스 지구성 운동수행능력과 골격근의 자가포식에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 8-week β-hydroxybutyrate (β-HB) administration with and without endurance exercise training on endurance exercise performance and skeletal muscle protein synthesis and degradation using a mouse model. Forty-eight male wild-type ICR mice (8 weeks old) were randomly divided into four groups: sedentary control (Sed+Con), (Sed+Con), sedentary β-HB (Sed+β-HB), exercise control (Exe+Con), and exercise β-HB (Exe+β-HB). β-HB was dissolved in PBS (150 mg/ml) and injected subcutaneously daily (250 mg/kg) for 8 weeks. Mice performed 5 days/week of a 20 min treadmill running exercise for 8 weeks. The running exercise was carried out at a speed of 10 m/min at a 10° incline for 5 min, and then the speed was increased by 1 m/min for every 1 min of the remaining 15 min. Following 8 weeks of treatments, visceral fat mass and skeletal muscle mass, blood parameters, and the markers for autophagy and protein synthesis were analyzed. The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA (p<0.05) using the SPSS 21 program. Eight weeks of Exe+β-HB treatment significantly lowered blood lactate levels compared with the other three groups (Sed+Con, Sed+β-HB, and Exe+β-HB) Exe+β-HB) (p<0.05). Eight weeks of Exe+β-HB significantly increased maximal running time (time to exhaustion) compared with the Sed+Con and Exe+Con groups (p<0.05). Eight weeks of β-HB administration significantly decreased autophagy flux and autophagy-related proteins in the skeletal muscle of mice (p<0.05). Conversely, the combined treatment of β-HB and endurance exercise training increased protein synthesis (mTOR signaling and translation) (p<0.05). The 8-week β-HB treatment and endurance exercise training had synergistic effects on the increase in endurance performance, increase in protein synthesis, and decrease in protein degradation in the skeletal muscle of mice.
