  • The fatigue test of the fillet weldments was executed with different beveling angles and porosities. The beveling angles of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $55^{\circ}$ were compared with fatigue lives. After the fillet weldment failure, the porosities which found at the fractured surface were observed to account the effect on fatigue life. Finite element analysis was performed to correlate the fatigue strength and the sizes and the locations of porosities. The stress-strain field was severely affected by the length of notch and the sizes and locations of porosities. Based on the quantitative analysis of porosity effect, the total volume of porosities was a key factor for fatigue strength of the fillet weldment.

  • Cucumber fruits requires a lot of labor to harvest in time in Korea, since the fruits are cut and grabbed by hand. In this study, we developed an end-effector for robotic harvester of cucumber fruits. Its development involved the integration of an end-effector system with a PC compatible, DC motors, and a motor controller board. Software, written in Pic-basic, combined the functions of motor control with various circumstances. Cucumber's properties were measured and analyzed for precision of the end-effector. The results were similar to those of other vegetables. Properties including hardness of cucumber fruits were used as basic data for development of a harvester.

  • This study aims to investigate the influence of bevel angles on the fatigue life of V-groove butt-welded joints with back-plates made by SM490A steel material, generally used for excavators, because changes in the geometry, material and surface properties of welded regions affect the fatigue life of welded structures. Butt type test specimens were prepared by the $CO_2$ welding of rolled steel plates (SM50A steel) with a thickness of 13.5 mm at a welding speed of 30 cm/min and these Butt type test specimens had two different groove angles, which are $40^{\circ}$ (A type) and $30^{\circ}$ (B type). In order to investigate differences in fatigue life between two types, 4-point bending fatigue tests were conducted with a stress ratio of R=0.1 under the cyclic loading environment at a frequency of 5 Hz at room temperature. The fatigue life of A type specimens was approximately 7% higher than that of B type specimens. The stress concentration factors calculated by finite element analysis were 2.16 for A type and 2.25 for B type, whose difference was caused by the influence of the back-plates of butt-welded structures. The current results could provide important guidelines to determine the V-groove angle of butt-welded joints with a satisfactory fatigue life, although under severe operating conditions.

  • This paper was to study the effect to Yongrak phenomenon of I groove submerged arc welding depending on the plasma cutting surface characteristics, and how to reduce the causes and characteristics Yongrak phenomenon. Shipbuilding and marine structures is designed to use the thick plates and welded by high current to obtain deep penetration. Yongrak phenomenon has been occurred frequently depending on the quality of cutting surface and it makes degrade of the welding quality and modification of the welding. As a result, it was confirmed that I Groove plasma cutting characteristics get bevel form of 2 to 4 degrees to one side direction from the vertical position with Yongrak phenomenon. This is the main reason of Yongrak phenomenon in butt joint welding and 4 degree reverse bevel on the upper surface of base metal by submerged arc welding brought the effect of significant reduction of Yongrak phenomenon.

  • This study is concerned with the cold forging of sintered preform by rotary forging process and direct powder compacting process. An experiment has been carried out using the rotary powder forging press (500kN) which had been designed and equipped with the rotational conical die inclined to the central axis of the press at certain angle The effect of process variables was observed and measured by several mechanical test, such as hardness distribution density, and microstructure of the specimens. It is found that the highly densified P/M parts can be obtained and this process is very effective for improving quality of the powder products.

  • These days, the great part of design processes in the field of ship or offshore manufacturing are planed and implemented using the customized CAD system for each ship-building companies. It means that all information for design and production could be extracted and reused at the useful other area cost considerable time and efforts. The representative example is the estimation of welding length and material amount which is demanded during the construction of ship or offshore structures. The proper estimation of welding material to be used and the usage of them at the stage of schedule planning is mostly important to achieve the seamless process of production and expect the costing in advance. This study is related to the calculation of welding length and needed material amount at the stage of design complete utilizing the CAD system. The calculated amount are classified according to welding position, stage, block, bevel and welding type. Moreover it is possible to predict the working time for welding operation and could be used efficiently for the cost management using the results of this research.
