  • Quantile regression has become a more widely used technique to describe the distribution of a response variable given a set of explanatory variables. This paper proposes a novel modelfor quantile regression using doubly penalized kernel machine with support vector machine iteratively reweighted least squares (SVM-IRWLS). To make inference about the shape of a population distribution, the widely popularregression, would be inadequate, if the distribution is not approximately Gaussian. We present a likelihood-based approach to the estimation of the regression quantiles that uses the asymmetric Laplace density.

  • A R-S-S-R three dimensional mechanism is designed for crank-rocker type through the optimization technique. The nonlinear kinematic equation of the mechanism is formulated by adopting the concept of structural error and precision points. Taking this equation as an objective function, the required mechanism is optimally synthesized by the Fletcher-Davidon-Powell's method of optimization techniques. The structural errors due to the various positions of precision points are compared, and the results from the use of two penalty functions suggested respectively by Fiacco-McCormick and by Powell are also compared on their effectiveness. The mobility of the optimally designed mechanism is checked for the possibility of its motion, and when a mechanism is optimally designed, it is strongly suggested that the mobility must be checked on the designed mechanism.

  • Evolutionary algorithms, which are frequently used in an automatic calibration of watershed runoff simulation models, are unconstrained optimization algorithms. An additional method is required to impose constraints on those algorithms. The purpose of the study is to modify the SCE-UA (shuffled complex evolution-University of Arizona) to impose constraints by a penalty function and to improve performance of the automatic calibration module of the SWMM (storm water management model) linked with the SCE-UA. As indicators related to peak flow are important in watershed runoff event simulation, error of peak flow and error of peak flow occurrence time are selected to set up constraints. The automatic calibration module including the constraints was applied to the Milyang Dam Basin and the Guro 1 Pumping Station Basin. The automatic calibration results were compared with the results calibrated by an automatic calibration without the constraints. Error of peak flow and error of peak flow occurrence time were greatly improved and the original objective function value is not highly violated in the automatic calibration including the constraints. The automatic calibration model with constraints was also verified, and the results was excellent. In conclusion, the performance of the automatic calibration module for watershed runoff event simulation was improved by application of the penalty function to impose constraints.

  • Single-person households recently have been rapidly increasing and one reason may be the increment in elderly single-person. Since the change of living patterns is relevant to the government policy direction, it is important to understand how single-person households are clustered and which factors have influence on them. In this study, we tried to detect spatial clusters of single-person households and low-income elderly single-person households after adjusting for deprivation index. A recently developed fused lasso for Poisson data was used for data analysis and we provided the details on how to use it in R. From these analysis results, we observed the effect of socioeconomic level on the clusters and explained the reason why spatial clusters are shown after adjusting for deprivation index.

  • A subdomain-interface finite element method is suggested to solve a class of fully- coupled thermomechanical problems with contact boundaries. The penalty method is used for connecting subdomains that satisfy interface compatibility conditions. As a result, effective stiffness matrices are always positive definite, and computational efficiency can be improved to a considerable degree. Moreover, any complex-shaped domain can be divided into independently modeled subdomains without considering the conformity of meshes on interfaces. Using a computer code based on the present method, these advantageous features are shown through a set of numerical studies.

  • Subdomain-interface variational formulation is presented to solve a class of dynamic contact problems of composite structures. The penalty method is used for imposing inequality constraints on contact surfaces and for connecting finite element subdomains that satisfy interface compatibility conditions. As a result, any complex-shaped domain can be easily divided into independently modeled subdomains without considering the conformity of meshes on interfaces. Some advantageous features of the present method are shown through a set a numerical studies with a developed computer code.

  • A domain/boundary decomposition technique is applied to carry out efficient finite element analyses of 3-D contact problems. Appropriate penalty functions are selected for connecting an interface and contact interfaces with neighboring subdomains that satisfy continuity constraints. As a consequence, all the effective stiffness matrices have positive definiteness, and computational efficiency can be improved to a considerable degree. If necessary, any complex-shaped 3-D domain can be divided into several simple-shaped subdomains without considering the conformity of meshes along the interface. With a set of numerical examples, the basic characteristics of computational efficiency are investigated carefully.

  • Many gradient-based mathematical methods have been developed and are in use for structural size optimization problems, in which the cross-sectional areas or sizing variables are usually assumed to be continuous. In most practical structural engineering design problems, however, the design variables are discrete. The main objective of this paper is to propose an efficient optimization method for structures with discrete-sized variables based on the harmony search (HS) meta-heuristic algorithm that is derived using penalty function. The recently developed HS algorithm was conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. It uses a stochastic random search instead of a gradient search so that derivative information is unnecessary. In this paper, a discrete search strategy using the HS algorithm with a static penalty function is presented in detail and its applicability using several standard truss examples is discussed. The numerical results reveal that the HS algorithm with the static penalty function proposed in this study is a powerful search and design optimization technique for structures with discrete-sized members.
