  • Unlike domestic railway transportation system in which majority of station are equipped with gate access controller and ticket office, it has been a very common practice in overseas railway transit or railway station that they use a pressure door mat, infrared-sensors or CCTV cameras so as to automatically determine the number of passenger onboard and alight and to reflect the information to their business (i.e., deployment of vehicles and human resources). The data collected by the automatic passenger counting (APC) system provides methods how to obtain the information about the number of passenger using the vehicles on the basis of date, time and stop(station) which enables large-scaled transit company to create profits through effective vehicle deployment and management of their employees. This paper addresses the basic features of the automatic passenger counting system using infrared sensor and describes those of the extended APC system in conjunction with wireless technologies such as GPS, WLAN or Cellular network.

  • The current research aims at classifying the bus stops as transfer center in order to establish the rational bus transfer systems. Existing research typically identifies characteristics of demands for bus stops and land use surrounding the bus stops and classifies and profiles the bus stops. A common problem with this type of research is that the results with cross-sectional characteristics of land use and bus stop usage do not capture the details of trip chain, the fundamental characteristics of the trips with transfer. This paper therefore examines bus stop classifications with such variables as transport mode chains, intermediate stop chains and timing chains. The analysis on the data collected on Monday 20 April 2009 for passengers of Gyeong-gi bus results in a clear classification among bus stops in terms of such trip chain variables. The research would provide useful information for the decision support of transfer stops location choice and infrastructure design.

  • The evaluation of public transit service quality is more complicated than evaluating other aspects of transportation service. Although various measures of effectiveness [MOEs] for transit service have been studied and applied, a more comprehensive and accurate MOE is still required. In the past, either data from user surveys or the experience of bus agency administrators and/or engineers used to measure the quality of service. However, recently, with reliable and accurate real time data from BMS(Bus Management System) and BIS(Bus Information System), more reliable and accurate MOEs are available. This study develops a service evaluation model from users' perspectives, which is based on user' cost models that consider passenger access time, riding time, waiting time, and discomfort due to in-vehicle overcrowding, violation of traffic laws, and accident rate. For validating proposed model, data from the BMS and transit-fare cards (T-Money Card) for Seoul's No. 472 main bus line were used. Models developed in this study provided reliable results.

  • Ganghwa has met a new development period in land use and infrastructure based on the 4th National Development Planning, however the public transportation system is not systematically operated yet. This paper analyzes the bus trip pattern in Ganghwa using transportation card data during a week. The result indicates that average 7,100 people use buses a day and the most frequent use occurred in Friday. Clear peak-hours between 7 and 8 A.M. and between 4 and 5 P.M. were appeared due to commuting and school trips. According the result of regression analysis, population and the number of hospitals and schools area showed positive relationships with but trips reflecting regional characteristics. The research contributes to providing basic data for constructing an efficient public transportation system in the future.
