  • The snake detection theory posits that, due to competition with snakes, the primate visual system has been evolved to detect camouflaged snakes. Specifically, one of its hypotheses states that the subcortical visual pathway mainly consisting of koniocellular cells enables humans to automatically detect the threat of snakes without consuming mental resources. Here we tested the hypothesis by comparing human participants' responses to snakes with those to fearful faces and flowers. Participants viewed either original images or converted ones, which lacked the differences in color, luminance, contrast, and spatial frequency energies between categories. While participants in Experiment 1 produced valence and arousal ratings to each image, those in Experiment 2 detected target images in the breaking continuous flash suppression (bCFS) paradigm. As a result, visual factors influenced the responses to snakes most strongly. After minimizing visual differences, snakes were rated as being less negative and less arousing, and detected more slowly from suppression. In contrast, the images of the other categories were less affected by image conversion. In particular, fearful faces were rated as greater threats and detected more quickly than other categories. In addition, for snakes, changes in arousal ratings and those in bCFS response times were negatively correlated: Those snake images, the arousal ratings of which decreased, produced increased detection latency. These findings suggest that the influence of snakes on human responses to threat is limited relative to fearful faces, and that detection responses in bCFS share common processing mechanisms with conscious ratings. In conclusion, the current study calls into question the assumption that snake detection in humans is a product of unconscious subcortical visual processing.

  • The present paper attempts to elucidate the taxonomic status of five species of Takydromus (T. amurensis, T. wolteri, T. tachydromoides oldi, T. kwagakunesis and T. auroralis) reported in Korean Peninsula to date. For this purpose 114 Takydromus specimens were collected from April 2003 to october 2004 in Southern Korean peninsula and morphological characters inclusive of the presence of contact between front-nasal and fostral and the number of femoral pores have been analyzed. The analysis reveals that T. kwagakunesis and T. auroralis should be synonymized to T. amurensis. In addition, the Korean Takydromus consists of two species of T. amurensis and T. wolteri.

  • This study was conducted to find the sexual size dimorphism(SSD) in morphometric characters of three species, Eremias argus, Takydromus amurensis and T. wolteri in lacertid lizard from Korea. Six external traits, snout-vent length, tail length, head length, head width, forelimb length and hind-limb length were focused to compare two sexes among the each three lizards. Student's t-test was used to compare the adult SVL between the sexes for each species. For the other parts of the body, a one-way analysis of covariance(ANCOVA) with SVL as the covariate was used. In all these species, males have longer tail and head than females like general lacertid lizard. In addition, male E. arugus have broader head and longer forelimbs and hind-limbs than conspecific females. Likewise, male T. wolteri have broader head than females. In the three lacertid lizards from Korea, snout-vent length did not significantly differ between the sexes. To understand the causes for SSD in SVL, ecological information, such as the presence/absence of male-male combat and the correlation between the SVL of female and litter size, is required. Therefore, further ecological study on the three species of lacertid lizard from Korea will make it possible to explain the reason SSD is not found in SVL.

  • Since a new (unrecorded) species was reported in 2016, a total of four sea snake species are currently listed in Korean waters. Although the possibility of year-round inhabitation of sea snakes in Korean waters has increased due to climate change, the related studies are scarce because of the lack of human resources and available equipment. We placed posters and banners requesting voluntary information on sea snakes in coastal regions and Jeju Island to obtain information on sea snake distributions in the coasts of South Korea and possible specimens through volunteer activities. As a result, we received total 45 reliable reports, including photographs or video, between March 2013 and December 2016. Eighteen reports on three sea snake species and thirteen capture cases of two species were submitted from Jeju Island and southern coastal regions of Korea mostly between August and November. There were twenty-seven false reports including seven cases of terrestrial snakes, eighteen fishes, and one each of invertebrate and inanimate material. Based on the results, we proposed the effective way of sea snake surveys using volunteers.

  • This study was attempted to investigate the effects of Duchesnea chrysantha (DC) on antioxidative activities by in vivo. Rats were divided into four experimental groups which are composed of normal diet group (N group), high fat high cholesterol diet group (HF group), high fat high cholesterol diet with 5% DC powder supplemented group (DA group) and high fat high cholesterol diet with 10% DC powder supplemented group (DB group). Supplementation of DC powder groups resulted in increased activities of hepatic glutathione peroxidase and catalase. The microsomal superoxide radical contents of the DA and DB groups were significantly reduced compared to the high fat high cholesterol diet group. The mitochondrial superoxide radical contents of the DB group were significantly reduced compared to the high fat high cholesterol diet group. Hepatic hydrogen peroxide contents in cytosol were significantly reduced 5% and 10% DC powder supplemented group. The carbonyl values contents in mitochondria and microsome of the DA and DB groups were significantly reduced compared to the HF group. Thiobarbituric acid reaction substance (TBARS) values in liver were reduced in 10% DC powder supplemented group compared to the HF group. These results suggest that DC powder may have a strong regulatory effect in the activation of the antioxidative defense system.

  • A 1-year-old, male, captive born Burmese Python (Python molurus bivittatus) presented with cloudiness of the left eye after ecdysis. Based on physical examination and history, subspectacular abscess was diagnosed. The causative microorganism was identified as a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA is a zoonotic problem of high concern and is a risk in public health and veterinary medicine. To our limited knowledge, this is the first reported case of MRSA infection in snakes.

  • Snakes are objects that appear in religions, folktales, and folktales of various countries, and have had a great influence on human spirit and culture since ancient times. In this study, we focused on the shedding of skin in the ecology of snakes and dealt with related symbols. In the process of shedding its skin, the snake overcomes difficulties and pains, grows, and escapes death to gain a new life. This has the meaning of individuation through the process of psychological transformation by overcoming hardships. This shedding of skin was recognized as a symbol of wisdom, transformation, rebirth, and healing in myths, religions, and folktales, and settled in people's unconscious.
