  • Expansion turbine system to recover the electricity energy from natural gas transmission stations is a well-known technique. The turbo-expander efficiency depends on the ratio of the natural gas flow rates to the design flow rate of the turbo-expander. However, if there is a big difference of the natural gas flow rate through the pressure letdown station because of seasonal supply pattern, that is, high flow rate in winter while low flow rate in summer, single turbo-expander system is not so efficient as to recover the pressurized energy from the low flow-rate natural gas. Therefore, we have proposed a new concept of double turbo-expander system: one is a big capacity and the other a small capacity. Here we have theoretically computed the electric powers at the pressure reduction from 18.5 bar to 7.5 bar depending on the inlet conditions of temperature and flow rate. The calculated electricity generation has been increased by 30% from 12.4 MW in a single turbo expander to 16.1 MW in the proposed double turbo-expander system when a minimal design efficiency of 0.72 is applied.

  • A Xenon Feed System (XFS) has been developed for hall-effect thruster to small satellite space-propulsion system applications. The XFS delivers low pressure gas to the Anode and Cathode of thruster head unit from a xenon storage tank. Accurate throttling of the propellant mass flow rate is independently required for each channel of the thruster head unit. The mass flow rate to each channel is controlled using the accumulator tank pressure regulation through a micron orifice and isolation valve. This paper discusses the Xenon Feed System design including the component selections, performance estimation and functional test.

  • Recently, the needs of system performances such as working speed and processing accuracy in machine tools have been increased. Especially, the working speed increment generates harmful heat at both moving part of the machine tools and handicrafts. The heat is a main drawback to progress accuracy of the processing. Hence, a oil cooler to control temperature is inevitable for the machine tools. In general, two representative control schemes, hot-gas bypass and variable speed control of a compressor, have been adopted in the oil cooler system. This paper deals with design and implementation method of fuzzy controller for obtaining precise temperature characteristic of HB oil cooler system in machine tools. The opening angle of an electronic expansion valve are controlled to keep reference value and room temperature of temperature at oil outlet. Especially, the fuzzy controller is added to suppress temperature fluctuation under abrupt disturbances. Through some experiments, the suggested method can control the target temperature within steady state error of ${\pm}0.22^{\circ}C$.

  • The fluid system such as, the quantity control of raw water, chemicals control in the purification, the waste water system as well as in the feed water or circulation system of the power plant and the ventilation system is controlled with the valve and moter pump. The system's performance and the energy saving of the fluid systems depend on control of method and delicacy. Until, PI controller use in these system but it cannot control delicately because of the coupling in the system loop. In this paper we configure a single flow system to the multi variable system and suggest the application of 2-DOF PID controller and the tuning methods by the neural network to the electrical power of the flow control system. the 2-DOF controller follows to a setpoint has a robustness against the disturbance in the results of simulation. • In this study, safety devices for ammonia tanks of a company in Ulsan petrochemical industrial complex were studied. The type of a tank is cylindrical and this tank was originally designed to store propylene in 1972. Due to the changes of the production schedule according to market environments, the usage of this tank has been changed to store ammonia. Despite of the changes of materials, there is no scientific information or reviews for guaranteeing the safety. Therefore, in this study, the current status of this tank is investigated to confirm that the operational conditions are complying with safety conditions. Moreover, the safety devices such as an ammonia absorbing system and water curtains are analyzed how they mitigate the impact of an accident. In addition, consequence analysis is performed to provide a proper emergency response plan. Throughout these analysis, it is confirmed that installed safety devices effectively mitigate the impact of accidents, and the necessary time for an emergency response plan is suggested when ammonia release.

  • The pipping system is widely used in many industries as equipment for transporting fluids over long distances. In high-pressure pipe, as the speed of the fluid increases, a loud noise is generated. Therefore, various studies have been conducted to reduce pipe noise. In this paper, a pipe noise analysis was developed to predict and quantitatively assess the flow-induced vibration and acoustic-induced vibration due to valve flow in high-temperature and high-pressure. To do this, a high-fidelity fluid analysis technique was developed for predicting internal flow in the pipe with valve. In additional, the contribution of compressible/incompressible pressure by frequency band was evaluated using the wavenumber-frequency analysis. To predict a low/middle frequency pipe noise, the vibroacoustic analysis method was developed based on Finite Element Method (FEM). And the pipe noise prediction method for the middle/high frequency was developed based on Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA).

  • Thermal management of a fuel cell is important to satisfy the requirements of durability and efficiency under varying load conditions. In this study, a linear state feedback controller was designed to maintain the temperature within operating conditions. Due to the nonlinearity of automotive fuel cell system, the state feedback controller results in marginal stable under load condition from $0.5A/cm^2$ to $0.7A/cm^2$. A PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and the modified state feedback controller are applied to control the temperature under the load condition from $0.5A/cm^2$ to $0.7A/cm^2$. The cooling system model is composed of a reservoir, radiator, bypass valve, fan, and a water pump. The performance of the control algorithm was evaluated in terms of the integral time weighted absolute error (ITAE). Additionally, MATLAB/SIMULINK$^{(R)}$ was used for the development of the system models and controllers. The modified state feedback controller was found to be more effective for controlling temperature than other algorithms when tested under low load conditions.

  • In the hydrogen compression cycle, which is currently being developed, hydrogen is compressed to a very high pressure using a compressor, and then stored and used in a high-pressure vessel. This shows that an increase in the temperature of hydrogen in the vessel due to a pressure rise during the filling process and the pressure fatigue due to the repeated cycle may cause problems in the reliability of the vessel. In this paper, for the entire processes in a 50 MPa hydrogen compression system, theoretical and numerical methods were conducted to analyze the following: the temperature increase of hydrogen in the vessel and the time required to reach thermal equilibrium with the surroundings, the change in temperature of hydrogen passing through the pressure reducing valve, and the required capacity of the heat exchanger for cooling the vessel. The results will be useful for the design and construction of hydrogen compression systems, such as hydrogen charging stations.

  • In commercial transactions of energy sources using hydrogen charging stations, high-accuracy flow meters are needed to prevent accidents such as overcharging due to inaccurate measurements and to ensure transparency in hydrogen commercial transactions through accurate measurements. This research developed a Corioli-type flowmeter prototype and conducted a risk assessment to prevent accidents during a process change comparison experiment for existing charging stations to verify the measurement performance. A process change section was defined for the installation of measurement facilities for empirical experiments and HAZOP was conducted. In addition, JSA was also conducted to secure the safety of experimenters, such as preventing valve mis-opening during empirical experiments. Measures were established to improve the risk factors derived through HAZOP, and work procedures were established to minimize human errors and ensure the safety of workers through JSA. The design change and system manufacturing for the installation of the metering system were completed by reflecting the risk assessment results, and safety could be confirmed through the performance comparison test of the developed meter prototype. The developed prototype flow meter showed a total of 30 flow measurements under the operating conditions of 70 MPa, and the average error was -1.58% to 3.96%. Such a metering error was analyzed to have the same performance as a flow meter installed and operated for commercial use.

  • The reduction of CO2 emission has been discussed in the Marine Environment Protection committee in the International Maritime Organization as the biggest causes of GHG for the purpose of indexing CO2 amounts released into the atmosphere from ships. Accordingly, various methods including the change in the hull design to improve energy efficiency, the coating development to reduce friction resistances, the additives development for improving thermal efficiency in an engine, the low-speed operation to reduce fuel consumptions, and etc. have been applied. The main engine of a ship is an electronic engine for improving the efficiency of the whole load area. However, marine generator engines still use mechanical drive engines in intake, exhaust, and fuel injection valve drive cams. In addition, most of marine generator engines in ships apply a part-load operation of less then 80% due to an overload protection system. Therefore, marine auxiliary diesel engine set at 100% load is necessary to readjust in order to efficient operation because of part-load operation. The objective of this study is to report the results of the part-load fuel consumption improvement by injection timing readjust to identifying the operational characteristics of a marine generator engine currently operated in a ship.
