In a large diameter piping system, high frequency energy can produce excessive noise, high vibration, and failures of thermo-well, instrumentation, and attached small-bore piping. High frequency energy is generated by flow induced vibration like vortex shedding in orifices and valves. Once this energy is generated, amplification may occur from acoustical and/or structural resonances, resulting in high amplitude vibration and noise. At low frequencies, pipe vibration occurs laterally along the pipe's length, but at higher frequencies, the pipe shell wall vibrates radially across its cross-section. The simple beam analogy which is based on the beam mode vibration can not be applied to evaluate shell mode vibration. ASME OM3 recommends that the stress be measured directly by strain gauge and be evaluated according to the fatigue curves of the piping material. This Paper discusses the excitation and amplification mechanism relevant to high frequency energy generation in piping system, the monitoring method of the shell mode vibration in ASME OM3, the evaluation method generally used in the industry. Finally this paper presents the stress evaluation of the cavitating venturi down stream piping, where high frequency shell mode vibrations were observed during the operation.

This paper deals with the process to identify the exciting forces generated from a rotary compressor. The equation of motion of a rigid compressor supported by several mounts was derived with 6 degree of freedom. The mass moment of inertia of compressor and the stiffness of rubber mounts were also identified by experiments. The exciting force at the center of mass of the compressor were estimated from the acceleration data measured at compressor shell. The piping system connected to the compressor was modeled. The acceleration of a pipe was predicted numerically by using the predicted exciting force. The numerical results showed good agreement with experimental results, which validated the identified exciting force.
In recent fire protection system, the pipings should be light weighted, seismic proof and wrought with non-welding method. The light weighted stainless steel pipes and fittings, satisfying these requirements, are already used as a fire protection system in Germany, Netherland, Taiwan, Australia, United States and Japan. Accordingly, performance evaluation tests were carried out to determine whether or not the fittings can be used in the pipings. As the performance evaluation tests, we conducted vibration test, water hammering test, bending test and fire test. With the results of the tests, we concluded that the fittings can be used in the fire protection system, and that the life expectancy of the fittings exceeds that of buildings.
One of the domestic co-generation plants have undergone excessive vibration problems of turbine attributed to external force for years. The root cause of turbine vibration may be shan alignment problem which sometimes is changed by thermal expansion and external farce, even if turbine technicians perfectly performed it. To evaluate the alignment condition from plant start-up to full load, a strain measurement of turbine and main steam piping subjected to thermal loading is monitored by using strain gages. The strain gages are bonded on both bearing housing adjusting bolts and pipe stoppers which. installed in the x-direction of left-side main steam piping near the turbine inlet in order to monitor closely the effect of turbine under thermal deformation of turbine casing and main steam piping during plant full load. Also in situ load of constant support hangers in main steam piping system is measured by strain gages and its results are used to rebalance the hanger rod load. Consequently, the experimental stress analysis by using strain gages turns out to be very useful tool to diagnose the trouble and failures of not only to stationary components but to rotating machinery in power plants.
Leak noise is a good source to identify the exact location of a leak point of underground water pipelines. Water leak generates broadband sound from a leak location and this sound propagation due to leak in water pipelines is not a non-dispersive wave any more because of the surrounding pipes and soil. However, the necessity of long-range detection of this leak location makes to identify low-frequency acoustic waves rather than high frequency ones. Acoustic wave propagation coupled with surrounding boundaries including cast iron pipes is theoretically analyzed and the wave velocity was confirmed with experiment. The leak locations were identified both by the acoustic emission (AE) method and the cross-correlation method. In a short-range distance, both the AE method and cross-correlation method are effective to detect leak position. However, the detection for a long-range distance required a lower frequency range accelerometers only because higher frequency waves were attenuated very quickly with the increase of propagation paths. Two algorithms for the cross-correlation function were suggested, and a long-range detection has been achieved at real underground water pipelines longer than 300m.

In the equipment industry such as chemical plants, high temperature, high pressure, and toxic fluids move between various facilities through piping. The movement and damage of pipes due to changes in the surrounding environment such as temperature changes, vibrations, earthquakes, and ground subsidence often lead to major accidents involving personal injury. In order to prevent such an accident, various types of expansion joints are used to absorb and supplement various shocks applied to the pipe to prevent accidents in advance. Therefore, it is very important to measure the deformation of the used expansion joint and predict its lifespan to prevent a major accident. In this paper, the deformation of the expansion joint was understood as a kind of motion, and the change was measured using a Hall Effect Sensor and a 9-Axis Sensor. In addition, we studied a system that can predict the deformation of expansion joints by collecting and analyzing the measured data using a general-purpose microcomputer (Arduino Board) and C language.

In the nuclear industry, wall thinning defect of straight pipe occur the enormous loss in life evaluation and safety evaluation. To use non-destructive technique, we measure deformation, vibration, defect evaluation. But, this techniques are a weak that is the measurement of the wide area is difficult and the time is caught long. In the secondary side of nuclear power plants mostly used steel pipe, artificiality wall thinning defect make in the side and different thickness make to the each other, wall thinning defect part of deformation measure by using shearography. In addition, optical measurement through deformation, vibration, defect evaluation evaluate pipe and thickness defects of pressure vessel is to evaluate quantitatively. By shearography interferometry to measure the pipe's internal wall thinning defect and the variation of pressure use the proposed technique, the quantitative defect is to evaluate the thickness of the surplus. The amount of deformation use thickness of surplus prediction of the actual thickness defect and approximately 7 percent error by ensure reliability. According to pressure the amount of deformation and the thickness of the surplus through DB construction, nuclear power plant pipe use wall thinning part soundness evaluation. In this study, pressure vessel of thickness defect measure proposed nuclear pipe of wall thinning defect prediction and integrity assessment technology development. As a basic research defected theory and experiment, pressure vessel of advanced stability and soundness and maintainability is expected to contribute foundation establishment.

Ice slurry that is a mixture of fine ice crystals and liquid water is a widely used working fluid in the ice thermal energy storage system due to its flowability and large latent heat of fusion. Generally ice slurry is made from supercooled water. But the excessive supercooling causes the water to freeze even worse to block the pipe. Additionally large degree of supercooling of water degrades the efficiency of the ice thermal energy storage system. Therefore the effective method to control the phase change from supercooled water to ice slurry is needed. In this paper we experimentally studied a novel method to generate the ice slurry from the supercooled water using the ultrasonic vibration. It was found that the cavitation impact of supercooled water by ultrasonic vibration can help the generation of ice slurry.

This research is focused on the experimental study of the noise induced by two-phase refrigerant flow in the evaporator. The two-phase flow in the evaporator has various flow patterns. The effects of two-phase flow pattern's characteristics on the noise of the evaporator are investigated experimentally. The experimental data shows that the generated noise is mainly related to the layout of the pipe and the certain two-phase flow patterns such as the churn and slug flow. Based on these results, we removed the unnecessary vertical pipe and changed the pipe diameter of the evaporator - inlet into small one in order to avoid the intermittent flow condition. The noise level of newly-designed inlet-pipe of the evaporator was measured experimentally by refrigerant-supplying equipment and compared with that of conventional one.

A new method is presented that uses guided wave techniques for sludge and blockages detection in long-range pipelines. Existing techniques have the limitations that the sludge position needs to be known a priori and the area to be inspected needs to be accessible. Two guided wave techniques have been developed which allow the sludge or blockages to be detected remotely without the need to access the specific location where the pipe is blocked, nor to open the pipe. The first technique measures the reflection of guided waves by sludge which can be used to accurately locate the blocked region; the second technique detects sludge by revealing the changes to the transmitted guided waves propagating in the blocked region or after it. The two techniques complement each other and their combination leads to a reliable sludge or blockage detection. Various types of realistic sludge have been considered in the study and the practical capabilities of the two techniques have been demonstrated.
