  • The stress analyses of the 'U'-shaped multi-ply reinforced gimbal bellows under high pressure and rotational displacement loadings are performed at the room and cryogenic temperatures. The bellows are used for the Lox pipe line which connects the combustion chamber with the turbopump of a liquid rocket engine. The distributions of the stress, the strains and the contact pressures are obtained from the finite element analysis considering the geometric non-linearities of the contacts between the plies and the material one of the isotropic plasticity. Those are compared with the stress results from EJMA (Expansion Joint Manufacturing Association) standard. Also, the effects of the operating temperature and the reinforcing ring on the stresses are investigated.

  • River crossing pipelines have been being operated with buried depth of 1.2~4m underneath river bottom to prevent buoyance and external impact. River crossing pipelines have to show resistance to soil load and hydrostatic pressure. In this study, structural integrity of the river crossing pipeline subjected to soil load and hydrostatic pressure was evaluated by using FE analyses. Hoop stress increased with increasing buried depth under identical water height in case of without concrete encasement, however, hoop stress decreased with increasing water height under identical buried depth.

  • In this study, residual-stress distributions in welds with different strength used in natural gas pipelines are calculated by using finite-element analysis and simulating a realistic welding process. The temperature and residual-stress analysis results are compared with the real fusion profile and the application results of the Fitness-For-Service assessment code, API 579 in order to validate the finite-element analysis model and procedure. Parametric study is performed to assess the effect of welding and material variables such as mechanical strength mismatch, the strength of weld metal, reinforcement, and heat input on the residual stress distributions. Finally, on the basis of the parametric study results, the effects of these variables on residual stress distributions are investigated. In particular, the strength mismatch between base metals has an insignificant effect on residual-stress distributions.

  • This paper is concerned with numerical analyses of residual stresses in welds and material's susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) for the primary piping system in nuclear power plants: Both the dissimilar metal weld (DMW) for stainless steel to low alloy steel joints and the similar metal weld (SMW) for forged stainless steel to cast stainless steel joints are considered. Thermal elasto-plastic analyses using the finite element method (FEM) are performed to predict residual stresses generated in fabrication welding and its related processes for both the DMW and SMW, including effects of quenching for cast stainless steel piping, machining of the DMW root, and grinding of the SMW root. As a result, the effect of quenching should be included in the evaluation of residual stresses in the SMW for the cast stainless steel piping. It is deemed that residual stresses in both the DMW and SMW would not affect the SCC susceptibility of the welds providing that the welding processes are completed without any weld repair on the inside wall of the joint. However, the grinding process if performed on the safe-end to piping weld, would produce a high level of residual stresses in the inner surface region and thus a stress improvement process (e.g. buffing) should be considered to reduce susceptibilities to SCC.

  • In this study, 398 city gas pipe systems installed on the bridges were surveyed and analyzed classified characteristics about the ages, length, and remote isolation devices installed or not. As a result of analysis, 43.0% pipes have been used more than 20 years and 89.4% do not have remote cut-off devices, so this study suggest safety management ways for the issues. Chosen 76 pipes were researched stress strain characteristics by CAESAR-II which is a specialized program for stress analysis. And, when a loop is installed on the bridge pipe, effect on code stress by the location and size of the loop was performed. This study can help to improve safety level by revising criteria of new installation, inspection and diagnostic.

  • According to the requirements of ANSI B3l.8, the pipe thickness is determined with hoop stress resulted from internal pressure. And the other loads induced by soil, vehicle, thermal expansion, ground subsidence, etc shall be evaluated rationally. There are two ways of calculating stress of buried gas pipeline. The first is FEM. FEM can calculate the stress regardless of the complexity of pipeline shape and boundary conditions. But it needs high cost and long time. The second is the way to use equation. The reliable equations to calculate the stress of buried gas pipeline was developed and have been used in designing pipeline and evaluating pipeline safety, But these equation are very difficult to understand and use for non-specialist. For easy calculation of non-specialist, the new computer program to calculate stress of buried natural gas pipeline have been developed. The stress is calculated by the equations and extrapolation of the graph resulted from FEM. The full paper is consist of series I and II. In this paper, series I, the calculating equation of the program is explained in detail.

  • Heavy oil used as ship propulsion has a serious issue regarding exhaust emission of global warming. Recently, among large-scale merchant ships are using LNG as green ships so called ech-ships. In this study, an vaporizer and pipes under cryogenic and high pressure load were considered to evaluate structural integrity according to codes. Structural analysis of the vaporizer and pipes was performed using the commercial code, ANSYS. Integrity evaluation of the vaporizer based on von Mises stress was performed in accordance with allowable stress specified in ASME Boiler & Pressure Vesssel Section VIII Division 2. To assess structural integrity of the pipes, stress components were combined and compared with ASME B31.3. The calculated stresses for all load cases are lower than allowable stresses, therefore the structural integrity of equipments are verified.

  • The integrity evaluation of pipes in nuclear power plant are essential for the safety of reactor vessel, and integrity must be assured when flaws are found. Accurate stress intensity analyses and crack growth rate data of surface-cracked components are needed for reliable prediction of their fatigue life and fracture strengths. Fatigue design and life assessment are the essential technologies to design the structures such as pipe, industrial plant equipment and so on. The effect of crack spacing on stress intensity factor K values was studied using three-dimensional finite element method (FEM). For the case of cylinder under internal pressure, a significant increase in K values observed at the deepest point of the surface crack. Also, this paper describes the fatigue analysis for cracked structures submitted to bending loads.
