Modifying surface of activated carbon for the electrode of EDLC with an organic electrolyte was investigated to improve the electrochemical performance of EDLC by the microwave radiation. Three kinds of activated carbons, prepared activated carbon from petroleum cokes and pitch cokes and commercial activated carbon BP-25, were used for this study. For all investigated activated carbons, hydrophilic functional groups-containing oxygen disappeared from the surface of activated carbon as microwave radiation. And as microwave radiation time was increased, the specific surface area and total pore volume of activated carbons were reduced and average pore diameter were increased. From theses effects, interfacial resistance of EDLC with the modified activated carbon electrode was drastically decreased, and discharge capacitance was increased although the specific surface area of activated carbon was reduced by this microwave radiation.
Silicon/Carbon/CNT composites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries were synthesized to overcome the large volume change during lithium alloying-de alloying process and low electrical conductivity. Silicon/Carbon/CNT composites were prepared by the fabrication processes including the synthesis of SBA-15, magnesiothermic reduction of SBA-15 to obtain Si/MgO by ball milling, carbonization of phenolic resin with CNT and HCl etching. The prepared Silicon/Carbon/CNT composites were analysed by XRD, SEM, BET and EDS. In this study, the electrochemical effect of CNT content to improve the capacity and cycle performance was investigated by charge/discharge, cycle, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests. The coin cell using Silicon/Carbon/CNT composite (Si:CNT=93:7 in weight) in the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ dissolved in organic solvents (EC:DMC:EMC=1:1:1 vol%) has better capacity (1718 mAh/g) than those of other composition coin cells. The cycle performance of coin cell was improved as CNT content was increased. It is found that the coin cell (Si:CNT=89:11 in weight) has best capacity retension (83%) after 2nd cycle.
Silicon (Si) has been investigated as promising negative-electrode (anode) materials because its theoretical specific capacity of 4200 mAh/g for $Li_{4.4}Si$ is far higher than that of carbonaceous anodes in current commercial products. However, in practice, the application of Si to Li-ion batteries is still quite challenging because Si suffers from severe volume expansion and contraction and lead to a continuous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)-filming process by cracking of Si. This process consumes the limited $Li^+$ source, builds up thick and unstable SEI layer on the Si active materials, and will eventually disable the cell. Since unstable SEI reduces electrochemical performance and thermal stability of the Si anode, the surface chemistry of the anode should be modified by using a functional additive. It is found that lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB) as an additive effectively protected the Si anode surface, improved capacity retention when stored at $60^{\circ}C$, and alleviated exothermic thermal reactions of fully lithiated Si anode.

A SMPS(scanning mobility particle sizer) system measures the number size distribution of particles using electrical mobility detection technique. An aerosol charge neutralizer, which is a component of the SMPS, is a bipolar charger using a radioactive source to apply an equilibrium charge distribution to aerosols of unknown charge distribution. However, the performance of aerosol charge neutralizers is not well known, especially for highly charged particles. In this study, the effect of the particle charging characteristics of two aerosol charge neutralizers on the measurement using a SMPS system was experimentally investigated for highly charged polydisperse particles. One has radioactive source of $^{85}$ Kr (beta source, 2 mCi) and the other has $^{210}$ Po (alpha source, 0.5 mCi). The air flow rate passing through each aerosol charge neutralizer was changed from 0.3 to 3.0 L/min. The results show that the non-equilibrium character in particle charge distribution appears as the air flow rate increases although the particle number concentration is relatively low in the range of 1.5∼2x10$^{6}$ particles/㎤. The low neutralizing efficiency of the $^{85}$ Kr aerosol charge neutralizer for highly charged particles can cause to bring an artifact in the measurement using a SMPS system. However, the performance of the $^{210}$ Po aerosol charge neutralizer is insensitive to the air flow rate.

This paper presents a highly efficient power management system for UAV-drones. For free from the battery cell-balancing issue, the proposed system allows the drone to utilize a single-cell Li-Po battery. To realize low-voltage input of 3.7V, the switch-mode step-up DC-DC converter is optimally designed with high power efficiency. The prototype DC-DC converter was implemented with an output voltage of 5V, which will be provided to digital parts of the drone. The power efficiency was measured to be max. 91.3% with low surface temperature. The measured line and load regulations were 0.02V/V and 0.15V/A, respectively. Thanks to the proposed power management system, the available time-to-fly of the drone is expected to be significantly extended in virtue of the enhanced power efficiency.

Generally, there are three ways to remove VOCs from the small painting booth; adsorption, burn and oxidation catalyst. RTO and RCO are high efficiency methods for removing VOCs. But they require large installation areas, which are not suitable for the small painting booth. And we need a new removing method because it is difficult to predict the A/C changing time and the recycle time. To solve these problems, we have developed the Arc plasma system which is simple and enable consecutive-use. It removes VOCs effectively and eco-friendly. In this study we have investigated the enrichment material and VOCs removal efficiency.

For comparison to the Li-ion battery, evaluating a thermal battery must consider additional variables. The first one is the temperature difference between the battery and its unit cell. Thermal batteries and their unit cells have a temperature difference that is caused by the thermal battery activation mechanism and its shape. The second variable is the electrochemical reaction steps. Most Li-ion batteries have a constant electrochemical reaction at the electrode, and battery voltage is affected when the concentration of Li ions is changed. However, a thermal battery has several steps in its electrochemical reaction, and each step has a different potential. In this study, we used unit cell discharge tests based on interpolating a 4D lookup table to estimate the performance of a thermal battery. From the test results, we derived an estimation algorithm by interpolating the table, which is queried from specified profile groups. As a result, we found less than a 5 percent difference between estimation and experiment at the 1.3 V cut-off time.

In this study, a numerical simulation of a vanadium redox flow battery was investigated for reactions involving an electrochemical species using comprehensive conservation laws and a kinetic model. For a 3-D geometry of the cell, the distributions of electric potential, vanadium concentration, overpotential, and ohmic loss were calculated. The cell temperature and initial vanadium ion concentration were set as variables. The voltage and electrochemical loss were calculated for each variable. The effects of each variable's impact on the electrochemical performance of a vanadium redox flow battery was numerically analyzed using the calculated overpotential in the electrode and the ohmic loss in the electrolyte phase. The cell temperature increased from $20^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$ when the voltage efficiency decreased from 89.34% to 87.29%. The voltage efficiency increased from 88.65% to 89.25% when the vanadium concentration was changed from $1500mol/m^3$ to $3000mol/m^3$.

High-intensity-discharge lamps are widely utilized in outdoor and indoor lighting circumstances that need high luminance. In lighting applications for MHD lamps, the size of the lamp ballast circuit is an important factor and should be as small as possible. The electronic ballast for MHD lamps is superior to the electromagnetic(EM) ballast in that it saves energy, and has smaller volume and lighter weight. In this paper, highly efficient cost-effective and small sized electronic ballast for Metal Halide Lamp with high power factor using Digital Signal Processor are proposed. The proposed electronic ballast for MHD lamps combines a boost PFC converter with a half-bridge inverter, the algorithms of the power factor correction and ballast control were implemented using the TI's TMS320LF2406 CPU. Experimental results validate the ballast is also useful and reasonably suggested.
In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of Silicon/Carbon anode materials were analyzed to improve the cycle stability of silicon as an anode materials of lithium ion battery. Porous silicon was prepared from TEOS by the $st{\ddot{o}}ber$ method and the magnesiothermic reduction method. Silicon/Carbon anode materials were synthesized by varying the mass ratio between porous silicon and pitch. Physical properties of the prepared Silicon/Carbon anode materials were analyzed by XRD and TGA. Also the electrochemical performances of Silicon/Carbon anode materials were investigated by constant current charge/discharge, rate performance, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance tests in the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ dissolved in organic solvents (EC : DEC = 1 : 1 vol%). The Silicon/Carbon anode composite (silicon : carbon = 5 : 95 in weight) has better capacity (453 mAh/g) than those of other composition cells. The cycle performance has an excellent capacity retention from 2nd cycle to 30th cycle.
