Physical Properties of Medical Radiation Shielding Sheet According to Shielding Materials Fusion and Resin Modifier Properties (차폐 재료의 융합과 개질제 특성에 따른 의료방사선 차폐 시트 물리적 특성 고찰)

  • The modifier proposed in this research is for enhancing the affinity of the glass component with the high polymer resin and the molecular weight. The particle packing, tensile strength and shielding performance of the shielding sheet made of the tungsten oxide were evaluated. The best effect can be obtained when 20% of the modifier PMMA used to improve the shielding performance and maintain the affinity and strength with the sealant is mixed. The fusion of the materials presented in this study and the mass production of the shielding sheet through the modifier are possible and will contribute to the production of lightweight shielding sheets in the future.

Radioprotective Effect of Panax Ginseng in Mouse Bone-marrow (생쥐에서 방사선방호제로서의 인삼효과에 관한 연구)

  • Radiation protection by post-irradiation injection of the ginseng extract in mice was studied. Male ICR mice, 7 weeks old, were orally injected with ginseng extrat(100mg/kg) for 10 days, and with physiologocal saline as the control. Immediately after final injection, mice were whole body irradiated with 5.08Gy(Cs-137 ${\gamma}$-ray, central dose rate : 654Gy/h) which induced Bone marrow death. At 24h after irradiation, micronucleus test and metaphase analysis in bone-marrow were carried, blood cell were counted and the survival rate were carried for 30 days after the irradiation. Stimulated recovery by the extract was observed in thrombocyte count, but that phenomenom was not showed in the erythrocyte and leucocyte counts. The 30-day survival ratio was 5% and 65% for the control and experimental group. Frequencies of micronuclei per 1000 polychromatic erythrocytes were 79.5${\pm}$1.5 in experimental group, 185.9${\pm}$35.8 in control. And Abnormal chromosomes per 50 metaphases were 112 in experimental group and 143 in control.

Induction of Micronuclei in Human and Mouse Lymphocytes Irradiated with Gamma Radiation and Effect of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (마우스와 사람 림프구에서 방사선에 의한 미소핵의 형성 및 고려인삼의 효과)

  • The frequencies of ${\gamma}$-ray-induced micronuclei (MN) in cytokinesis-blocked (CB) lymphocytes at several doses were measured in three donors of human and C57BL/6 mice. Measurements performed after irradiation showed a dose-related increases in MN frequency in each of the donors studied. The relative sensitivity of mouse in spleen lymphocytes (SLs) compared with human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) was estimated by best fitting linear-quadratic model based on the radiation-induced MN data over the range from 0 cGy to 400 cGy. In the case of MN frequency with 0.2 per CB cell, the relative sensitivity of mouse SLs was 1.67. Compared with the radiation-induced MN formation in the PBLs of human, the SLs of mouse were more radiosensitive. Using this MN assay with human PBLs and mouse SLs, studies were performed to determine whether the water fraction of ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer) against radiation-induced MN in human PBLs after in vitro irradiation (3Gy) and in SLs of C57BL/6 mice after in vivo irradiation (3Gy). The frequency of MN in human PBLs was reduced by water fraction of ginseng (0.5mg/ml of medium) both pre-and post treatment (p<0.0l) in vitro. In addition, the frequency of MN in mouse SLs was also reduced by pretreatment of ginseng (2mg/ml of drinking water for 7days) in vivo. The data suggested that the ginseng may reduce cell damage caused by ${\gamma}$-rays in vitro and in vivo. Further studies are needed to characterize better the protective nature of ginseng extract, its fractions and compounds.

Protective Effects of Chitosanoligosaccharide on Gamma Ray-Induced Hepatic Damage in Mice (생쥐에서 키토산올리고당의 감마선 저항 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect the radiation-resistance of chitosan on the mice. A healthy male ICR mice were used for experiment. The SOD and MDA activity was measured from the liver of mice at 48 and 72 hours after the irradiation. The ultrastructural changes of the liver by irradiation was observed at 24, 48 and 72 hours after irradiation. The experimental groups were divided into three groups. Group 1 was the control group which was not treated with chitosanoligosaccharide before or after iradiation. Group 2 was the prefeeding group which chitosanoligosaccharide solution was supplied by feeding ad libitum for 30 days before irradiation. Group 3 was the postfeeding group which chitosanoligosaccharide solution was supplied by feeding after irradiation. In all groups 10 mice were used. The results were as follow: The SOD and MDA activity of the prefeeding group was decreased significantly (P<0.01). Control group - The nuclei were condensed. The mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) were extended and the ribosome was dropped from the rER. Prefeeding group - The nuclei were rounded. The mitochondria was elongated. And the rER attached ribosomes. Postfeeding group - The nuclei were slightly condensed. The mitochondria and the rER were extended and the ribosome was dropped from the rER. It was concluded that the chitosanoligosaccharide was effective in the radiation-protection. So, chitosan would have the potential as the radiation-protection materials.

The effects of herbs on the radiation-induced apoptosis in intestinal crypt cells (방사선 조사 마우스에서 소장움세포의 Apoptosis 발생에 미치는 생약의 효과)

  • This study was performed to determine the effect of several herbs on radiation-induced apoptosis in jejunal crypt cells. Longyanrou(Euphoris longana), Suanzaoren(Zizyphus vulgaris), Yuanzhi(Polygala tenuifolia), Rensan(Panax ginseng), Fuling(Poria cocos), Muxiang (Saussurea lappa), Chuanxiong(Cnidium officinale), Baishaoyao(Paeonia lactifolia), Shengma (Cimicifuga heracleifolia), Chaihu (Bupleurum falcatum) and Dongchongxiacao ( Paecilomyces japonica) reduced the frequency of radiation-induced apoptosis(p<0.05). Although the mechanisms of this effect remain to be elucidated, these results indicated that Longyanrou, Suanzaoren, Yuanzhi, Rensan, Fuling, Muxiang, Chuanxiong, Baishaoyao, Shengma, Chaihu and Dongchongxiacao might be useful inhibitors of apoptosis, especially since these are relative nontoxic natural products.

  • S-2, W-diaminopentyl isothiuronium bromide and relevant thiophosphate derivative were prepared starting from both phthalimide and l-ornithinic acid. Drug toxicities of the prepared isothiuronium bromide and S-2-(W-aminoalkylamino) ethyl isothiuronium bromides were tested through ICR male mice, 4 and 8 weeks old and weighing $25{\sim}35g$. The former compound was found to be less toxic than those of latter compounds. This difference of drug toxicities seemed to be originated from their chemical structures, which were examined through IR Spectrometry Radioprotective effects of these compounds were discussed through relevant research data and diaminopentyl derivatives are considered to be a potent radioprotectant with low drug toxicity.

Ionizing Radiation Effect on the Carbohydrate Moiety of Chicken Ovomucoid (계란 ovomucoid의 탄수화물 부분에 미치는 이온화방사선의 영향)

  • Radiation effects on carbohydrate moiety of chicken ovomucoid, a protease inhibitor as a typical allergenic glycoprotein of egg white, was observed. The trypsin inhibitory activity of chicken ovomucoid decreased exponentially and the inactivation was more significant irradiated in $N_2$ than in $O_2$. From the protein blotting, radiation caused protein degradation in $O_2$ and protein aggregation also in $N_2$. The patterns of carbohydrate blotting were also similar with that of protein blotting. Sugar chains in low molecular weight fraction (MW<5,000) were released by radiation and those in $O_2$ were higher than in $N_2$. From the HPLC patterns of the degradation of sugar chains, all peaks of oligosaccharides have the tendency to decrease with the increase of radiation dose and more remarkable in $O_2$ than in $N_2$. These results suggest that ionising radiation could cause the overall conformational changes of ovomucoid by the degradation and release of oligosaccharides.

  • The sorption of radioactive cobalt and ruthenium on alumina, silica gel, zeolite 3A, kaolin and Na-bentonite has been studied as a function of pH. nuclide concentration and ionic strength. Retardation factor for cobalt and ruthenium on soil minerals was determined through porosity measurement. Hydrolysed species, cobalt and ruthenium interact with solid surfaces by physical adsorption processes. Freundlich sorption isotherms for cobalt and ruthenium are effectively linear. The sorption decreases with increasing ionic strength for cobalt and ruthenium. The effect of increasing porosity on the retardation factor countered the effect of a significant increase in the distribution coefficient.

  • In this study, to set-up the calculation method of radiation shielding of the KSC-4 shipping cask which is being used for spent fuel transportation, the pre-existing two calculation methods, deterministic and probabilistic methods were tested. For the first, the DOT4.2 computer code adopting the deterministic theory was applied for the calculation of effective neutron shielding under assumption of continuous wall thickness of the cask. To verify the first results, the probabilistic theory was used as an alternate calculation. In this case MCNP4A computer code adopting the probabilitic theory was used. And same approximation was obtained from the two different shielding calculations. From the results, it could be confirmed that the design and calculation method used for the radiation shielding of the KSC-4 was adequate and sufficiently safe to meet the design and QA requirements of 10CFR71 Appendix H.

Radioprotective Effects of Post-Treatment with Hesperetin against γ-Irradiation-Induced Tissue Damage and Oxidative Stress in BALB/c Mice (BALB/c 마우스에서 감마선 조사로 유도된 조직 손상과 산화적 스트레스에 대한 헤스페레틴 투여 후의 방사선방호 효과)

  • Ionizing radiation induces cell damage through formation of reactive oxygen species. The present study was designed to evaluate the protective effects of post-treatment with hesperetin against ${\gamma}$-irradiation-induced cellular damage and oxidative stress in BALB/c mice. Healthy female BALB/c mice were exposed to ${\gamma}$-irradiation and administered hesperetin (25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg, b.w., orally) for 7 days after 6 Gy of ${\gamma}$-irradiation. Exposure to ${\gamma}$-irradiation resulted in hematopoietic system damage manifested as decreases in spleen indexes and WBC count. In addition, hepatocellular damage characterized by increased levels of aspartate aminoransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in plasma. However, post-irradiation treatment with hesperetin provided significant protection against hematopoietic system damage and decreased AST and ALT levels in plasma. The results indicate that ${\gamma}$-irradiation induced increases in lipid peroxidation and xanthine oxidase (XO) as well as decreases in antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) and glutathione (GSH) in the liver. These effects were also attenuated by post-treatment with hesperetin, which decreased lipid peroxidation and XO as well as increased antioxidant enzymes and GSH. These results show that post-treatment with hesperetin offers protection against ${\gamma}$-irradiation-induced tissue damage and oxidative stress and can be developed as an effective radioprotector during radiotherapy.
