  • Putting his 'Panic theatre' aesthetics into practice, Fernando Arrabal is a leader of the avant-garde theatre. Creating ${\ll}$Guernica${\gg}$, Arrabal's play, in a dance theatre format, this study tries to analyze the group pathos in fanatical conscious and poetic movement. Logic analysis is based upon the pathos value of the theatre of the Absurd that transcends the unrealistic and the illogic on the authority of dual element of the internal opposition and contradiction of human beings. In ${\ll}$Guernica${\gg}$, the dance of the Absurd found expression in the group pathos phenomenon of fanatical conscious, and was analysed as a new framework of communication structure.

  • Children with congenital cardiac defects associated with high pulmonary artery pressure may die despite accurate surgery. Postoperative mortality and morbidity have been attributed to acute rises in pulmonary artery pressure and resistance. Acute pulmonary hypertensive crisis is defined as a paroxysmal event in which pulmonary arterial systolic pressure rises to or above systemic levels followed by a rapid fall in systemic pressure and a minor pulmonary hypertensive event is defined as an acute rise in pulmonary arterial pressure to more than 80 % of systemic levels but without a fall in systemic pressure. From Oct. 1988 to Jul. 1989, we experienced 23 patients who showed many pulmonary hypertensive crises after operation in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Seoul National University Children\ulcorner Hospital. Their preoperative PAP/SAPs were 53 to 123 %[mean 93.3%] and diagnoses were VSD[7], TAPVR[5], TGA[4], AVSD[3], MS[1], DORV[1], Truncus arteriosus[1], and AP window[l]. There were 9 deaths among 23 patients and they showed many pulmonary hypertensive crisis episodes during postoperative intensive care, which was managed by sedation, hyperventilation, oxygen, and acidosis correction and which decreased after using tolazoline. In view of our experience, we recommend that pulmonary artery pressure should be monitored in congenital heart defected patient with preoperative pulmonary hypertension to confirm and to manage the pulmonary hypertensive crisis accurately and using tolazoline is helpful in the treatment of pulmonary hypertensive crisis.

  • Hippocampal slice models can be a powerful tool to study the mechanism of partial epilepsy. Despite the loss of connection with the rest of the brain, in vitro hippocampal slice preparations allow detailed physiological and pharmacological studies, which would be impossible, in vivo. There are several methods to induce electrographic seizures on hippocampal slice models. Those are electrical pulse train stimulation, 0 $Mg^{2+}$ artificial cerebrational fluid and high concentration of extracelluar $K^+$ on bath. Among them, the electrically triggered seizure may mimic the physiological communication between neuronal populations without any deterioration of normal physiologic and chemical status of the hippocampal slice models. Presumably, such communication from hyperexcitable areas to other neuronal populations is involved in the development of epilepsy. Electrographic seizures in hippocampal slice models occur in the network of neurons that are involved in epileptic seizures in the hippocampus in vivo. Because these models have many advantages and are very valuable to research of epileptogenesis on partial epilepsy, I would like to introduce the electrophysiological methods to induce electrographic seizure or epilepsy on hippocampal slice models briefly in this paper.

  • Planaria were recently reported to be a simple and sensitive model to investigate the mechanistic aspect of seizure and to screen potential anticonvulsants. Using planarian model, we analyzed the pharmacological effect of ukgansan (UGS), an oriental herbal medicine containing seven medicinal herbs, on the planarian locomotor velocity (pLMV) and glutamate-induced seizure-like activity (pSLA). To test whether D. japonica is suitable for studying anti-seizure agents, we investigated the effect of glutamate on pLMV and pSLA in D. japonica. In the present study we first confirmed that pSLA in D. japonica was induced by L-glutamate. Glutamate significantly produced pSLA in a dose dependent manner, but did not affect pLMV. These glutamate-induced paroxysms were decreased by antiepileptic drug, topiramate. A similar inhibitory effect on glutamate-induced pSLA was observed after the treatment of UGS. The present results suggest that UGS and its active constituents possess useful substance inhibiting seizure in planarian and that D. japonica provides a convenient model to search active herbs containing anti-seizure activity.

  • Objectives: We investigated the effect of electroacupuncture on epileptic rat model and its underlying mechanisms on suppression of the epilepsy. Methods: It was used pentylenetetrazol $(35{\sim}40\;mg/kg.\;i.p)$ induced epileptic rat model and square wave electrical stimulations (5 mA, 5, 40 or 80 Hz frequency) was applied to acupoints on 'Dazhui' and 'Taichong' for 30min. Results: Electroacupuncture suppressed spikes and slow waves of EEG due to the epileptic condition. Out of electroacupuncture, a high frequency of 80Hz had a better effect for suppress epileptic EEG wave. Conclusions: Electroacupuncture can markedly reduce the excitability of cerebral cortex and strengthen the inhibitory process, checking epilepsy wave. Some intrathalamic nuclei have a promoting or inhibiting effect on epileptic EEG wave. This experimental study we are proposed to Electro-acupuncture can suppression epileptic rat model and it's scientific mechanisms.

  • The imidazopyridine, zolpidem, a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic drug, is widely-prescribed for insomnia. It is regarded as a good alternative to benzodiazepine because of the reduced possibility for abuse and development of dependence. However, more recently, due to the reduced possibility for abuse and development of dependence, it is regarded as a good alternative to benzodiazepine. adverse effects of zolpidem have been recognized. The objective of this report is to provide information on the potential for occurrence of benzodiazepine-like withdrawal seizure in patients who chronically take zolpidem continually. We present and discuss a case of seizure after sudden interruption of the protracted use of an abusively high dose of zolpidem. Zolpidem may not be the ideal drug for longterm pharmacotherapeutic management of insomnia. Clinicians should administer zolpidem at a low-dose for a short period of time for prevention of drug abuse and dependence and the potential for occurrence of benzodiazepine- like withdrawal seizure.

  • A 10-year-old intact female Yorkshire terrier dog (weighing 3 kg) was referred with the primary complaint of severe dyspnea, cyanosis and occasional syncopal episode. Physical examination revealed irregularly irregular bradycardia with persistent pulse deficits. The 12-lead surface ECG showed high grade atrioventricular blocks. Thoracic radiography revealed severe intrathoracic collapse. The dog was successfully treated with an intraluminal self-expanding stent ($COOK^{(R)}$) under the aid of transcutaneous cardiac pacing.
