  • Deafs train articulation by observing mouth of a tutor, sensing tactually the motions of the vocal organs, or using speech training aids. Present speech training aids for deafs can measure only single speech parameter, or display only frequency spectra in histogram of pseudo-color. In this study, a speech training aids that can display subject's articulation in the form of a cross section of the vocal organs and other speech parameters together in a single system is to be developed and this system makes a subject know where to correct. For our objective, first, speech production mechanism is assumed to be AR model in order to estimate articulatory motions of the vocal organs from speech signal. Next, a vocal tract profile model using LP analysis is made up. And using this model, articulatory motions for Korean vowels are estimated and displayed in the vocal tract profile graphics.

Abstract The existing lip animation method of Hangul classifies the shape of lips with a few shapes and implements the lip animation with interpolating them. However it doesn't represent natural lip animation because the function of the real motion of lips, during articulation, isn't linear or simple non-linear function. It doesn't also represent the motion of lips varying among phonemes because it doesn't consider coarticulation. In this paper we present a new coarticulation model for the natural lip animation of Hangul. Using two video cameras, we film the speaker's lips and extract the lip control parameters. Each lip control parameter is defined as dominance function by using L fqvist's speech production gesture theory. This dominance function approximates to the real lip animation of a phoneme during articulation of one and is used when lip animation is implemented. Each dominance function combines into blending function by using Hangul composition rule based on demi-syllable. Then the lip animation of our coarticulation model represents natural motion of lips. Therefore our coarticulation model approximates to real lip motion rather than the existing model and represents the natural lip motion considered coarticulation.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to illustrate the circumferential comfortable retainer (CCR) as a removable maxillary retainer with good potential patient compliance and to evaluate the discomfort of the retainers including distorted speech, gagging sensation and appliance discomfort. Methods: Sixty-six orthodontic patients (male, 23; female, 43; mean age, $23.42{\pm}10.19$ years) who received orthodontic treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances were randomly assigned to two groups after debonding, a conventional wraparound retainer (CWR) group that fully covers the palate with an acrylic plate and a highly polished surface, and a circumferential comfortable retainer (CCR) group which has a horseshoe shaped base plate with three folds on the anterior region. A questionnaire that had a visual analog scale (VAS) which consists of a 100-mm horizontal line with 2 end-points labeled "no discomfort" on the left and "worst discomfort" on the right, with regard to distorted speech, gagging sensation and discomfort, was administered to patients after 4 weeks of retainer wear. The Mann-Whitney test was used to test the hypothesis that there was no difference between the two retainers. Results: Comparing distorted speech and discomfort, the CCR group significantly had lower values than the CWR group ($p$ < 0.05). Comparing gagging sensation, the CCR group had lower values than the CWR group but there were no statistically significant differences between groups ($p$ = 0.146). Conclusions: In conclusion, the results suggest that the circumferential comfortable retainer (CCR) might facilitate patient compliance and thereby improve the maintenance of the fixed orthodontic treatment outcome.

  • The hybrid phenomenon of pronunciation of K-Pop lyrics, which is the diction fusion phenomenon of lyrics, is not a strategic measure for an overseas expansion but a natural formation in the course of history of K-Pop. With the debut of Seo Tai-ji and Boys in 1992, the course of K-Pop changed and settled from ballad to dance music. After three years, the success of a hip hop dance music, 'Come Back Home', opened up a door to Korean Americans who ascertained the potential competitiveness of a hip hop music in K-Pop market. And the writer insists that such advance of Korean Americans into K-Pop market is the origin of the bilingual usage and diction fusion phenomenon of K-Pop lyrics. Therefore, this research will look into the pronunciation system of Korean and English in order to understand the bilingual pronunciation system shown in the lyrics sung by Korean American hip hop singers in the 1990s. Moreover, through Korean pronunciation system, this analysis will discover the main cause of continual acceptance and application of Korean American's broken Korean in the diction of lyrics. Last but not least, this exploration will show the correlation of English pronunciation method of Korean lyrics appeared in K-Pop and the diction of Korean lyrics used by Korean American hip hop singers in late 90s. This research will identify the primary cause of the diction fusion phenomenon in the course of history of K-Pop.

  • This article discusses the teaching of listening and reading skills through enhancing the awareness of pronunciation. First, it examines the problems which take place in listening comprehension, and seeks the ways in which we can teach the skill rather than simply practise it. The approaches proposed are based on micro-listening exercises which practise individual subskills of listening, especially by using the cloze test and tracking. The issue of using authentic materials is then examined for teaching recognition of the features of natural speech. Finally, it is argued that classroom activities need to take account of the true nature of real-life L2 listening.

  • There can be lips transformed geometrically in the lip images according to the location or the pose of camera and speaker. This transformation of the lip images changes geometric information of original lip phases. Therefore, for enhancing global lip information by using partial information of lips to correct lip phases transformed geometrically, in this paper we propose a method that can geometrically correct lips. The method is composed of two steps - the feature-deciding step and the correcting step. In the former, it is for us to extract key points and features of source image according to the its lip model and to create that of target image according to the its lip model. In the latter, we decide mapping relation after partition a source and target image based on information extracted in the previous step into each 4 regions. and then, after mapping, we unite corrected sub-images to a result image. As experiment image, we use fames that contain pronunciation on short vowels of the Korean language and use lip symmetry for evaluating the proposed algorithm. In experiment result, the correcting rate of the lower lip than the upper lip and that of lips moving largely than little was highly enhanced.

  • This paper, describe about a generation of a syllable restoration regulation for a post processing of a speech recognition and a decrease of a restoration candidate. It created a syllable restoration regulation to create a restoration candidate pronounced with phonetic value recognized through a post processing of the formula system that was a tone to recognize syllable unit phonetic value for a performance enhancement of a dialogue serial speech recognition. Also, I presented a plan to remove a regulation to create unused notation from a real life in a restoration regulation with a plan to reduce number candidate of a restoration meeting. A design implemented a restoration candidate set generator in order a syllable restoration regulation display that it created a proper restoration candidate set. The proper notation meeting that as a result of having proved about a standard pronunciation example and a word extracted from a pronunciation dictionary at random, the notation that an utterance was former was included in proved with what a generation became.

  • Korea language has postpositions such as eul, reul, yi, ga, wa, and gwa, which are attached to nouns and add meaning to the sentence. When foreign notations or abbreviations are included in sentences, the appropriate postposition for the pronunciation of the foreign words may not be used. Sometimes, for natural expression of the sentence, two postpositions are used with one in parentheses as in "eul(reul)" so that both postpositions can be acceptable. This study finds examples of using unnatural postpositions when foreign words are included in Korean sentences and proposes a method for using natural postpositions by learning the final consonant pronunciation of nouns. The proposed method uses a recurrent neural network model to naturally express postpositions connected to foreign words. Furthermore, the proposed method is proven by learning and testing with the proposed method. It will be useful for composing perfect sentences for machine translation by using natural postpositions for English abbreviations or new foreign words included in Korean sentences in the future.
