This study was investigated the changes of chemical components in winter cereal crops before and after germination for development of functional foods. The contents of general composition (crude protein, lipid, and ash), phytic acid, free sugar, mineral, and fatty acid were analyzed. Crude ash content was slightly decreased after germination but protein contents was slightly increased in oats after germination. Phytic acid content showed the highest increase from 1.09 to 1.56 mg/g in oats after germination. Glucose contents of rye and wheat increased 6 and 3.5 folds after germination, respectively. Also, maltose contents of oat and wheat increased 7.4 and 5.5 folds, respectively. Major fatty acids were palmitic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. After germination, palmitic acid and linoleic acid decreased while oleic acid increased in oats and barley. Further studies are needed to investigate the functional components and biological properties of winter cereal crops after germination.
These experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of seed coating with ten environmentally acceptable polymers, on germination percentage, water uptake, respiration, emergence and seedling growth characteristics. The water absorption of polymer-coated seeds in saturation condition was highest in klucel and lowest in polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP), and that in water was highest in klucel and lowest in maltrin. Respiration rates of polymer-coated seeds in Hwayoungbyeo and Ilpumbyeo were lower than those of none-coated seeds, and those in Daecheongbyeo and Jinmibyeo were higher than that of none-coated seeds, and those of sepiret coated seeds were higher than PVP coated seeds. The germination polimer-coated seed was reduced by one percentage by coating with seed coating machine. Germination percentage was not affected by any of polymer coating in high quality seed, but there were significant effects in low quality seed coating with waterlock, surelease 46 and sepiret significantly reduced germination some cultivars. Germination percentage after accelated ageing treatment were slightly higher most of polymer-coated seeds than in none-coated seeds, but those of sepiret-and klucel-coated seeds were lower significantly. Germination percentage of seeds coated with daran 8600, rnaltrin, sacrust and opadry were enhanced slightly under cold test other polimers reduced germination. The seedling height of polymer-coated seeds were longer than those of none-coated seeds, but those of waterlock, PVP and maltrin coating seeds were shorter, seedling hight was shortened by polimer coating under cold test. Polymer-coated seeds showed higher emergence percentage, shorter emergence time in field condition. The highest emergence percentage and the shortest emergence time was shown at 90% soil moisture content.
This research was investigated to prepare basic data in a study on the copper tolerance of herbaceous plants through the growth rate and the elimination rate dependent on Cu concentration of 6 species; Commelina communis, Medicago sativa, Echinochloa frumentancea, Zea mays, Helianthus annuus and Abutilon avicennae, We examined the germination rate, root and shoot growth of seedling and fresh biomass of 6 species (Commelina communis, Medicago sativa, Echinochloa frumentancea, Zea mays, Helianthus annuus and Abutilon avicennae) painted to Cu contaminated soil (50, 100, 200, 300-CuCl₂/㎏) and control for 14 days. The germination rate of H. annuus, E. frumentancea and C. communis were not affected by Cu concentration. However, root and shoot growth of H. annuus was about 7% of control and the biomass was 35% of control at 300 ㎎-CuCl₂/㎏. E. frumentancea and C. communis that showed good growth rate at higher Cu contaminated soil (>200 -CuCl₂/㎏), were the most tolerant plant to Cu concentration. Especially, E. frumentancea eliminated over 30% of Cu in soil and the amount of Cu uptake increased with increasing Cu concentration; 1,020㎎ Cu per 1 ㎏ of soil at 300 ㎎-CuCl₂/㎏. From these results, we concluded that E. frumentancea would be used for phytoremediation.

The inhibitory substance on the growth of mung bean seedling was amorphous crystal that had a single spot on silica gel thin layer chromatography under ultra-violet irradiation in dark room. The Rf value was 0.85 in n-butanol-acetic acid-formic acid-water(15 : 12 : 3 : 10) system, and 0.92 in n-butanol-acetic acid-water(4 : 1 : 5) system, respectively. Biochemical reaction of the inhibitor was negative to $FeCl_3$, pyrimidine, ninhydrine, folin, fehling, Salkowski and Ehrlich reaction, but the inhibitor had a blue fluorescence from irradiation of ultra-violet rays and had maximum absorption at 252nm on UV spectrum. On IR spectrum, the Peaks of the inhibitor appeared at $3300{\sim}3500,\;2900{\sim}3000,\;1600{\sim}1700,\;and\;1400cm^{(-1)}$. The strain tested was identified to be similar Streptomyces iuteogriseus by morphorogical and physiological characteristics.

We investigated that electron beam irradiation is the effective method to control the sprouting of sweetpotato roots without changing of food quality characteristics. In 12 and $25^{\circ}C$ storage after electron beam irradiation, all control samples were sprouted from 6 and 4 weeks after storage, respectively. The sprouting rate of control increased with time and the rate reached to 11.2-12.4 and 70.5-74.2% at 8 weeks after 12 and $25^{\circ}C$ storage. Also, the sprouting of middle and below positioning sweetpotato roots at 12 and $25^{\circ}C$ storage after irradiation reached to 8.6-11.3 and 42.7-48.7% after a storage period of 8 weeks, respectively. However, the sprouting of all sweetpotato roots stored at $4^{\circ}C$ and upper (0-7 cm) positioning samples of box stored at 12 and $25^{\circ}C$ with electron beam was completely inhibited due to increase peroxidase and indole acetic acid (IAA) oxidase activity. Also, all samples with electron beam such as hardness, pH, sugar content, weight loss, and vitamin C and dacarotene content did not differ from that of the control. Therefore, if electron beam will be irradiated to sweetpotato roots above 0.1 kGy before packing, it will effectively inhibit their sprouting stored at $25^{\circ}C$ without the change of food quality characteristics.
Rhizo-bacteria were isolated from organic-farming soils to select antagonistic agent for controlling citrus melanose disease. Among several antagonistic bacteria, KB-401 effectively inhibited mycelial growth of several plant fungal pathogens, including the pathogen of citrus melanose, Diaporthe citri. KB-401 also inhibited spore germination of the fungal pathogen. The tip of germ tube was swollen when conidia of D. citri were co-culture with KB-401 in PD broth amended 1% glucose. KB-401 was identified as Bacillus subtilis through the investigation for physiological characters and the analysis of nucleotide sequences of 16S rDNA.
Dry-type artificial seeds were produced by dehydrating alginate-encapsulated somatic embryos of lire. When placed on half- strength MS solid medium 20% of the artificial seeds dehydrated to the level of 80% water loss were capable of germination. Addition of 0.1 mg/L ABA to alginate solution before encapsulation enhanced the germination percentage of those dehydrated to the level of nil to 90% water loss by up to 1.7-folds. The results suggest that ABA may enable somatic embryos to overcome physical and/or physiological restraint by encapsulation and dehydration.
1) The purpcse of the present study is to investigate the effects of culture filtrates of Fuarsium oxysporum f. vasinfectum which is known to produce wilt toxin (fusaric acid) on the germination of host plants (sesame, cotton) and non-host plants (wheat, rice). 2) The experiment on the germination of sesame, cotton, wheat and rice seeds in the seed beds separately added with culture filtr ates of 10 differential strains of Fusarium oxysporom f. vasinfectum demonstrated that culture filtrates of most strains of the fungus inhibit or retard the germination of seeds of 4 plants used in this study while those of a few strains do not give notable influence on the germination of seeds of those plants. a) Culture filtrates of strain 201 of the fungus strongly inhibited the germination of seeds of those plants in nearly same degree, but culture filtrates of the other strains, 281, 321, etc., showed remarkable differences in the toxicity inhibiting or retarding the germination of the seeds of those plants. b) In general, sesame seeds are greatly susceptible, wheat and cotton seeds are moderately susceptible and rice seeds are resistant to the toxicity of culture filtrates of the fungus. 3) In the soil containing a number of differential strains of Fusarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum, the germination of seeds and also the growth of seedlings of non-host plants are possibly checked by the toxic substance, fusaric acid produced by the fungus.

This study was to investigated the changes of physiologically active components in germinated brown rice treated with chitosan (CGBR) and its anti-obesity effect in rat fed a high fat diet. Contents of physiologically active compounds such as total phenolic compounds, total dietary fiber, $\gamma$-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and total phytic acid in CGBR were significantly higher than those of traditional germinated brown rice (GBR). Lipase inhibitory activity of CGBR was higher than those of GBR and brown rice (BR). High fat diets containing CGBR, GBR, and BR were administered to three groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats for four weeks. All groups showed no significant difference in body weight, total abdominal fat, and plasma lipid levels. However, CGBR group appeared to have lower body weight gain and total abdominal fat level than other groups fed high fat diets containing GBR and BR. Total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol contents in plasma of CGBR group were also lower than those of other groups. Thus, new germination method of brown rice using chitosan is a useful process, which utilizes plant defense responses to elevate the production of secondary metabolites and anti-obesity effect.
This study was conducted to evaluate various beneficial functions of soaked and germinated Robusta coffee beans. Vietnam Robusta coffee beans were soaked in purified water or Salicornia extract for 12 h. The total polyphenol content of non-germinated coffee (NGC), Salicornia extract-germinated coffee (SGC), and water-germinated coffee (WGC) was found to be 16.71-20.17%. First, NGC, SGC, and WGC at concentrations of 25-100 ㎍/mL showed significant anti-oxidant effects on DPPH radical scavenging and xanthine oxidase activity. NGC, SGC, and WGC also inhibited tyrosinase activity and melanin formation in α-MSH-induced B16F10 cells. In addition, the anti-obesity property of germinated coffees was tested by the Oil Red O staining method. NGC, SGC, and WGC inhibited adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells without cytotoxicity. Taken together, germinated Robusta coffees with enhanced flavor showed beneficial multifunctional effects, such as anti-oxidant, anti-melanogenesis, and anti-adipogenesis effects.
