  • In the design of tunnel segment structure, axial and moment forces are considered as significant forces. Since axial force is much greater than moment force, the whole section of segment remains in compression. Therefore crack width can be reduced. But the axial force is not considered in criteria for serviceability check. This fact leads service condition more severe compared to ultimate condition and makes the required steel reinforcement increase to meet the serviceability criteria. In this study, the effect of axial force on serviceability of tunnel segment is evaluated, experimentally and analytically. Mock-up tests on segments with actual size were performed and investigated in terms of initial crack resistance. The evaluation proves that more comprehensive design could be achieved when the axial force is considered in the procedure for the serviceability check in design of tunnel segment.

  • In general, RC beam members are designed as flexural members, considering only the bending load. However, in actual buildings, axial and bending load are simultaneously applied due to the continuity between members. As a result, the bending strength of the RC beam member increases, but the displacement decreases, and cracks are mainly concentrated in the center of the beam. Therefore, in this study, the bending performance of both normal and strengthened RC beam using carbon fiber sheets subjected to combined axial and bending load was experimentally evaluated. The carbon fiber sheets were wrapped around the middle of the specimens, and axial and bending load were applied simultaneously to the beams. The magnitude of the axial force and the effects of carbon fiber sheet reinforcement on the deformed shape, bending strength, deflection, and ductility of the RC beams were analyzed. The results show that as the applied axial force increased, the maximum bending strength increased, but the ductility decreased 64%. The bending strength of the strengthened beams increased up to 27%, the maximum deflection decreased around 8% and the ductility increased by up to 43%.

  • The strength of steel in a concrete filled steel tube (CFT) is reduced in a fire, but the concrete filled structurally ensures the fire resistance due to its high thermal capacity. This research analyzed the fire resistance performance due to the variances of concrete strength filled inside of steel tube and the load ratios, which can influence on the fire resistance of CFT. As $280{\times}280{\times}6$ CFT columns with the concrete strengths of 24 MPa and 40 MPa and the axial load ratios of 0.9, 0.6, and 0.2 in accordance with KS F 2257-1 and 7 were heated with loading to examine the fire resistance performance, the fire resistance used to 24 MPa concrete showed 27, 113, and 180 minutes according to the axial load ratios, 0.9, 0.6, and 0.2 respectively. In case of 40 MPa concrete, the fire resistance were turned out to be 19 and 28 minutes for the axial load ratios, 0.9 and 0.6 respectively. The results of fire resistance with 40 MPa concrete showed the much lower fire resistance performance than those of 24 MPa concrete. In case of 40 MPa, the fire resistance performance was not increased significantly according to the axial load ratio than that of 24 MPa. The main reason why the higher concrete strength showed lower fire resistance than that of lower guessed the internal stress had the concrete strength weak.

  • A restraint coefficient for creep and dry shrinkage deformation of concrete in a composite section was derived to calculate the residual stress, and an equation for the loss rate of the pre-compression force was proposed. The derived restraint coefficient was computed by using the transformed section properties for the age-adjusted effective modulus of elasticity. The long-term behavior of complicate composite sections could be analyzed easily with the restraint coefficient. The articles of the current design code was examined for PSC and steel composite sections. The dry shrinkage strains of $150 ~ 200$\times$10^{-6}$ for the computations of the statically indeterminate force and the expansion joint could be under-estimated for less restrained sections such as the reinforced concrete. The dry shrinkage strain of $180$\times$10^{-6}$ for the computation of residual stress in the steel composite section was unreasonably less value. The loss rate of 16.3% of the design code for the PSC composite section in this study was conservative for the long-term deformation of the ACI 205 but could not be used safely for that of the Eurocode 2. For pre-compressed concrete slab in the steel composite section, the loss rate of prestressed force with low strength reinforcement was much larger than that with high strength tendon. The loss rate of concrete pre-compression increased, while that of pre-tension decreased due to the restraint of the steel girder.

  • The longitudinal axial strain in the plastic hinge region of reinforced concrete (RC) columns influences on the structural behavior of RC structures subjected to reversed cyclic loading. This strain decreases the effective compressive strength of concrete and increases the lateral displacements between stories by causing the elongation of member length. This paper investigated the effects of the axial force on the elongation of a RC member by using a sectional analysis of RC members. The analytical and experimental results indicated that the axial force decreased the axial strain in the plastic hinge region of RC columns. In this study, a model was proposed to predict the axial strain of RC columns. The proposed model considering the effects of axial force ratio consisted of three path types ; Path 1-loading region, Path 2-unloading region, and Path 3-reversing cyclic loading region. The axal strains predicted by the proposed model were compared with the test results of RC columns with various axial force ratios, and agreed reasonably with the observed longitudinal strains.

  • Because the torque control method, which is also caled the clamping method in domestic construction sites, is affected by a variation of the torque coefficient, quality control of the torque coefficient is essential. This study was focused to evaluate the effects of several environmental factors and errors when installing bolts while tightening high-strength bolts. Conditioning environmental parameters include wet, rusty and exposure-to-air-only conditions. In addition, because of errors in workability such as instalation of two washers, upset washers are selected. During the tests, torque, torque coefficient, tension and angle of nut rotation were obtained using a bolt testing machine. Test specimens of four types of bolts (High-Strength Hexagon bolt on KS B 1010, Torque Shear Bolt on KS B 2819, High-Strength Hexagon bolt coated with zinc, and ASTM 490 bolt) were recomended. Based on test results, the tightening characteristics subjected to environmental parameters were investigated and compared with the results in normal condition.

  • It is generally known that the mechanism of behavior in the flexible earth retaining system is relatively more complicated than in the rigid earth retaining system. Moreover in the case of long span strut supporting system the analysis of strut axial force change becomes more difficult when the differences of ground condition and excavation work progress on both sides of excavation section are added. When deeper excavation than the specification or installation delay of supporting system or change of ground condition happen during construction process, lots of axial force can be induced in some struts, which threaten the safety of construction. This paper introduces two examples of long span deep excavation where struts and rock bolts were used as a supporting system with flexible wall structure. The characteristics of ground deformation and strut axial force change, which were measured in the sections of two examples that are 50 meters apart in one construction site and have almost similar design and construction conditions were analysed, the similarity and difference between measurement results of two examples were compared and investigated. This article aims to improve and develop the technique of design and construction in future projects having similar ground condition and supporting method.

  • To apply the research results to the design and the construction of the high rise buildings, long-term behavior of reinforced concrete structure have been widely studied. However, shoring and reshoring at early ages have not been considered in the most of studies. The removal of forms and shores has been dealt with one construction sequence. i.e. the deformation occurred at the early age before the removal of shore has been neglected. In this paper, two-dimensional frame analysis program for long-term behavior of reinforced concrete was developed. In the developed program, construction sequence including the settlement and the removal of shores is considered to predict axial force variation due to forms ,shores, and time-dependent concrete stiffness. Analysis results show that the time-dependent axial force of shores is reduced, and the redistributed axial force of the interior column is greater than the value by elastic analysis and that of the exterior column is smaller. In order to demonstrate the validity of this program, the test frame was constructed in sequence of the placement of concrete, form removal, reshoring, shore removal, and the application of additional load. The proposed program predicts experimental results well.
