Long-term field observations were performed in three excavation sites in order to investigate the displacement behavior of adjacent ground during overall excavation procedure, where the depths of deep excavations were 15 m$\∼$29 m. In this study, ground settlements and lateral displacements of braced wall measured during installation of retaining wall and removal of bracing were specially focused to evaluate the behavior quantitatively according to three-stage-divided procedure, i.e. pre-excavation, main excavation, and removal of bracing. Through field measurements on three excavation sites, lateral displacements induced during removal of bracing are approximate to 40$\%$ of the amount found during main excavation stage and additional adjacent ground deformation during post-excavation procedure ranges from 18$\%$ to 33$\%$ of that found during main excavation stage, based on the settlement volume. In conclusion, it was quantitatively identified in this study that the deformations of adjacent ground during pre- and post-excavation stage were not negligible.

Poor compaction of subgrade soil causes low stiffness and bearing capacity of sublayers so that faulting and differential settlements can be generated between new and old pavement surfaces in case of widening works. However, investigation of verifying the reason of producing the defects in the pavements are not performed in detail. In this study, several in-field tests including PMT and PBT were performed for obtaining stiffness of the sublayers in new and old pavements respectively of an widening project. Then, based on the obtained stiffness values and the measured deformations obtained by specially designed tilt meters, the main reasons of generating different deformations between the old and new pavement sections and the relationship between the deformation and stiffness are verified.
When there exists a fault zone ahead of the tunnel face and a tunnel is excavated without perceiving its existence, it will cause stress concentration in the region between the tunnel face and the fault zone because of the influence of the fault zone on the arching phenomena. Because the underground structure has many unreliable factors in the design stage, the prediction of a fault zone ahead of the tunnel face by monitoring plans during tunnel construction and the rapid establishment of appropriate support system are required for more economical and safer tunnel construction. Recent study shows that longitudinal displacement changes during excavation due to the change of rock property, and if longitudinal displacement and settlement, which are measured in the field, are considered together in displacement analysis, the prediction of change in rock mass property is possible. This study provided the method for the prediction of fault zones by analyzing the changes of L/C and (Ll-Lr)/C ratio (L= longitudinal displacement at crown, C = settlement at crown, Ll = longitudinal displacement at left sidewall, Lr = longitudinal displacement at right sidewall) and the stereographic projection of displacement vectors which were obtained from the 3-D numerical analysis of hybrid method in various initial stress conditions.

Nowadays, the construction of tunnels with a shallow depth drastically in urban areas increases. But the effect of sidewall displacement in shallow tunnel on its behavior is not well known yet. Most studies on the shallow tunnel have been limited to the stability and the failure of the tunnel and the adjacent ground in plane strain state. Therefore, the model tests were conducted in a model ground which was built with carbon rods, in order to investigate the impact of the tunnel sidewall displacement on the lateral load transfer to the adjacent ground. The lateral displacement of the tunnel sidewall and the load transfered to the adjacent ground were measured in model tests for various overburdens (0.50D, 0.75D, 1.00D, 1.25D). As results, if the cover depth of tunnel was over a constant depth (0.75D) in a shallow tunnel, the tunnel sidewall was failed with a constant shape not depending on the tunnel cover depth and also not affected by the opposite side of the wall. But, if the cover depth of tunnel was under a constant depth (0.75D), the failure of the tunnel sidewall could affect the opposite sidewall. In addition, if the displacement of tunnel sidewall with 50% of the critical displacement occurred, the tunnel failure was found to be at least 75%. However, additional studies are deemed necessary, since they may differ depending on the ground conditions.

This paper describes the comparative results of measured and predicted values for the horizontal displacement of earth retaining wall based on two field cases, in order to evaluate the application of lateral earth pressure to earth retaining wall supported by earth anchor in Jeju. The prediction of lateral earth pressure acting on the earth retaining wall was performed by elasto-plastic analysis using Rankine earth pressure, Hong & Yun lateral earth pressure, Terzaghi & Peck modified lateral earth pressure, and Tschebotarioff lateral earth pressure. As a result, the predicted value of the maximum horizontal displacement for site A was about 10 to 12 times greater than the measured value, and in the case of site B, the predicted value was evaluated as about 9 to 12 times greater than the measured value. That is, both sites showed a similar increase rate in the maximum horizontal displacement by the predicted value compared to the measured value. In all field construction cases, the maximum horizontal displacement by measured values occurred in the sedimentary layer, soft rock layer, and clinker layer, and the horizontal displacement distribution was shown in a trapezoidal shape. The maximum horizontal displacement by the predicted value occurred around the clinker layer, and the horizontal displacement distribution was elliptical. In the ground with a clinker layer, the measured value showed a very different horizontal displacement tendency from the predicted value, because the clinker layer exists in the form of a rock layer and continuous layer. In other words, it is unreasonable to apply the existing prediction method, which is overestimated, because the characteristics of the earth pressure distribution in Jeju show a tendency to be quite different from the predicted earth pressure distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a research on the lateral earth pressure in the realistic Jeju that can secure more economic efficiency.

This paper investigates the effects of tunnelling-induced ground movements on nearby structures, considering soil-structure interactions of different ground (loose sand, dense sand, soft clay, stiff clay) and construction conditions (ground loss). The response of four-story block structures, which are subjected to tunnelling-induced ground movements, has been investigated in different ground and construction conditions (ground loss) using numerical analysis. The structures for numerical analysis has been modelled using Discrete Element Method (DEM) to have real cracks when the shear and tensile stress exceed the maximum shear and tensile strength. The response of four-story block structures has been investigated with a ground movement magnitude and compared in terms of ground and construction conditions (ground loss) considering the magnitude of deformations and cracks in structures. In addition, the damage levels, which are possibly induced in structures, has been provided in terms of ground and construction conditions (ground loss) using the state of strain damage estimation criterion (Son and Cording, 2005). The results of this study will provide a background for better understandings for controlling and minimizing building damage on nearby structures due to tunnelling-induced ground movements.

Stay cable is easily exposed to vibration induced rainy wind effects. There are some problems for not only unexpected vibration but also well-known vibration. An outbreak of displacement by the said effects brings damages such as over-tension of cables and barriers, fatigue of anchorages and dampers, and additional shear force variation of stiffening girders. This study suggests analytic methodology for dynamic tension variation of cables and shear force variation of stiffening girders. Additionally this study announces with dynamic problems for cable stayed bridge briefly. To realize this subject, we divide restoring force into chord component and normal component and then make up the differential equations which can satisfy physical phenomenon for each component. Finally we apply adequate functions such as sinusoidal and parabola in order to reduce these differential equations. Therefore we can meet with good results through a series of above process. As a remarkable result, CIP recommendations (2002) give inadequate solution with over 10% error. However it gives very good solution if parts of our study are reflected at the said recommendations. The fact means that CIP recommendations (2002) well-known as international standard of stay cables are not even concern about this subject yet. For verification of this study, F.E. analysis using E.C.C. with external forces was fulfilled, and the accuracy and conciseness of this study were shown.

A model slope was made to work out a way of detecting the sign of the occurrence of landslides and monitoring analysis was conducted to grasp the slope displacement of Terrestrial LiDAR equipment. As a result, the image of slope displacement could be monitored quickly and the accuracy of monitoring analysis was a deviation of 0.007m, 0.006m and 0.006m on average based on the figures prior to displacement after the first, second and third displacements, respectively. As the figures represent a very small deviation, they will be able to be used helpfully in measuring the displacement of actual slope in the future.

Solution for elastic foundation of plane strain state was derived by the application of variational method. Functions of the transverse distribution of the displacements for the analysis were chosen as linear functions. Loading conditions considered for the analysis were concentrated load and distributed load. Under the loading condition of the concentrated load, surface displacement was decreased drastically as the distance from the point of the loading increased. Under the loading condition of the distributed load, surface displacements were more uniformly distributed beneath the loading area when the ratio of the half of the loading width to the depth(B/H) of the compressible layer was greater. The surface displacement was more quickly converged from the edge of the loading area as the ratio(B/H) increased.
