  • The present study investigates in detail the combined effects of the Coriolis force and centrifugal force on the development of turbulent flows in a square-sectioned U-bend rotating about an axis parallel to the center of bend curvature. When a viscous fluid flows through a curved region of U-bend, two types of secondary flow occur. One is caused by the Coriolis force due to the rotation of U-bend and the other by the centrifugal force due to the curvature of U-bend. For positive rotation, where the rotation is in the same direction as that of the main flow, both the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force act radially outwards. Therefore, the flow structure is qualitatively similar to that observed in a stationary curved duct. On the other hand, under negative rotation, where these two forces act in opposite direction, more complex flow fields can be observed depending on the relative magnitudes of the forces. Under the condition that the value of Rossby number and curvature ratio is large, the flow field in a rotating U-bend can be represented by two dimensionless parameters : $K_{TC}$ =Re $\sfrac{1}{4}$√λand a body force ratio F=λ/Ro. Here, $K_{TC}$ has the same dynamical meaning as $K_{TC}$ =Re√λ for laminar flow.

  • Two-dimensional laminar numerical analyses were carried out for investigating the thermo-hydraulic characteristics of wavy channels with different shape parameters ($0.5{\leq}{\in}{\leq}1.5$, $0.1{\leq}{\gamma}{\leq}0.4$). PAO (polyalphaolefin), which is used for electronics cooling, is considered as the working fluid. In addition, constant properties, periodically developed flow, and uniform channel wall temperature conditions are assumed. Streamline and temperature fields, isothermal Fanning friction factors, and Colburn factors are presented for different Reynolds numbers in the laminar region ($1{\leq}Re{\leq}1000$). The results show that heat transfer is enhanced when the channel corrugation ratio (${\gamma}$) is large and channel spacing ratio (${\in}$) is small in the low Reynolds number region (Re < 50) and when ${\in}$ and ${\gamma}$ are large in the high Reynolds number region ($Re{\geq}50$).

  • The present study investigates in detail the combined effects of the Coriolis and centrifugal farce on the development of laminar flows in a square-sectioned U-bend rotating about an axis parallel to the center of bend curvature. When a viscous fluid flows through a rotating curved region, two types of secondary flow occur. One is caused by the Coriolis force due to the rotation of U-bend and the other by the centrifugal farce due to the curvature of U-bend. When the values of Rossby number and curvature ratio are large, the flow field in a rotating U-bend can be represented by two dimensionless parameters ; the Dean number K$\_$LC/=Re/√λ and a body ratio F=λ/Po. For positive rotation, where the rotation is in the same direction as that of the main flow, both the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force act radially outwards, the directions of the two secondary flows are the same. Therefore, the flow structure is qualitatively similar to that observed in a stationary curved duct with a larger f7c. On the other hand, in case of negative rotation, where two farces act in opposite direction, more complex flow fields can be observed depending on the relative magnitudes of the forces.

  • To extend the widely used Gibson and Launder's second order closure model to the low-Reynolds-number region near a wall, modifications have been made for velocity pressure-gradient interaction and dissipation terms in the stress equations, and also for the dissipation rate equation. From the computation of fully developed plane channel flow, it is found that the results with present model agree well with the data of direct numerical simulation in the predictions of stress components. And, the computed mean velocity profile coincides with the universal velocity law.

  • Turbulent wake behind a ship propeller has been investigated using the adaptive hybrid 2-frame PTV(Particle Tracking Velocimetry). 400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured according to 4 different blade phases and ensemble-averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the vortical structure of near wake within one propeller diameter downstream. The phase averaged mean velocity fields show the potential wake and the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. As the tip vortex evolves downstream, the slipstream is contracted and the turbulent intensity is decreased with viscous dissipation and turbulent diffusion.

  • A numerical analysis of steady/unsteady flow applying cavitation model and moving mesh method was carried out in order to analyze flow and response characteristics inside the pilot valve which controls the flight actuator system. The flow of the valve was assessed according to operation temperature and time. This research has found that valve characteristics became stable at above a specific temperature and the cavitation affected valve's performance. Internal pressure and response characteristics of the valve were analyzed and flow characteristics of steady and developed unsteady flow were confirmed to be matched each other.

  • This study clarified the flow path of Choosan Spring, Nari Basin, Ulleung Island, South Korea. The orientations of faults and fractures developed on the inner edge of the caldera were identified as major factors affecting the flow path. The main flow paths include fracture zones oriented N-S and E-W. The spring also flows in a NE or NNE direction under the influence of the irregular shape of the caldera, which slopes to the NNE. Using Entrobacteriaceae species as tracers, it was found that Nari groundwater flows toward Choosan Yongchulso. However, the small number of water samples used in the analysis limits our understanding of the flow path from Sungin Valley to Nari Basin and Choosan Yongchulso.
