This study was carried out to investigate the effects of stocking density on the eating and ruminating behavior of growing Hanwoo steer (Bos taurus coreanae). A total of thirty growing Hanwoo steers were divided into four stocking density groups (G1: 1 head/32 $m^2$, G2: 2 heads/32 $m^2$, G3: 3 heads /32 $m^2$, G4: 4 heads/32 $m^2$) with 3 replicates (12 pens). The results of eating behaviors for 48 hours are summarized as follows: Total intake was higher in 2G, 3G and 4G than in 1G, but not significantly different among thetreatments. Intake of roughage was the highest in 2G (3.32 kg), while 1G (2.85 kg) was the lowest (P<0.05). Eating time of concentrate was highly in the order of 1G > 2G > 3G > 4G (P<0.05). But eating time (concentrate + roughage) and ruminating time were not significantly difference among the treatments. Resting time (standing + lying) was the highest in 4G (P<0.01), and lying time was the highest in 2G. Chewing time (Eating + ruminating) was higher in 3G than in 1G, 2G, and 4G (P<0.05). Number of bolus, number of total chews, ruminating time per bolus and number of bolus per minute were not significantly difference among the treatments. But number of chews per bolus was significantly lower in 1G than those of the other treatments (p<(0.05). Number of urinating was in the order of 1G > 4G > 2G > 3G (P<0.05). However, stocking density had no effect on drinking and defecating. Eating rate and chewing efficiency were the highest in 4G (P<0.01, 0.05), but ruminating efficiency was not significantly difference among the treatments.

A behavioral investigation in deer equipped with EMG telemetry system was carried out to examine the chewing behavior pattern for efficient feeding management of Korean spotted deer(Cervus nippon). There was more frequent and irregular eating and rumination behavior pattern in deer than those in other ruminants. Time spent on eating and ruminating was 261 and 291 min., respectively. Total number of boli regurgitated was 647 times per a day and deer regurgitated an average boil of 21.6 times per a rumination period. Total rumination time was 291 min. and deer have an average rumination time of 26.9 sec. per a boli. Deer had 245.3 min. for total chewing time, 20,405 times fur number of chews, 31.5 times for number of chews per bolus, and 53.4 times for number of chews per minute during rumination period. An average regurgitation bolus an hour was lower with 15.3 numbers in the 09∼15 hours subperiod and higher with 26 numbers in the 15∼21 hours subperiod and it had been gradually trended to become to low after 15∼21 hours subperiod. An average numbers of chews a bolus at every 6 hours subperiod increased gradually according to time. A deer spent 23.3 min. on eating and 26.2 min. on ruminating per 100g ingested dry matter. Consequently, since deer have a different chewing behavioral pattern to other ruminants such as more frequent and irregular eating and ruminating patterns, small bolus and low number of chew, it is likely to needed to establishment and development efficient feeding system for deer.

The comparisons between cellulolytic bacteria adhesion on rice straw and fiber digestion in time course during rumen fermentation were studied in situ. The adhesions of cellulolytic bacteria, F. succinogenes. R. albus and R. flavefaciens, were measured by RT-PCR. When the rice straws were incubated at 0. 2, 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours of the in situ rumen, straw was degraded with increasing speed during the incubation and showed the highest disappearance increasing rate (DM g/h) from 8 to 12 hour. The adhesions of F. succinogenes, R. flavefaciens and R. albus were achieved above 80% in 1 hour of in situ rumen fermentation and then keep adhesive population up after the time of fermentation. When the in situ samples were collected at 0, 5, 10, 30 and 60 min to detect the early stages of adhesion on the rice straws ingested into rumen, the numberous adhesive colony of F. succinogenes, R. flavefaciens and R. albus were detected in 5 min. In case of rice straw treated with 0, 2, 4 and 8% NaOH, all of three cellulolytic bacteria showed the increasing trends of adhesion with increasing DM disappearance of rice straw by higher concentration of NaOH at 12 hour of in situ. However, there were showed respectively difference at 24 hour. The present results gave certain evidence that adhesion of cellulolytic bacteria is definitely achieved in early stage of roughage ingestion into rumen, their colony develop the stable communities on roughage in process of rumen fermentation and then fiber degradation is accelerated.
Effects of low quality roughage sources on duration and frequencies of rumination and chewing in Hanwoo steers were determined, Animals were fed three diets; concentrate+rice straw(SO:SO), concentrate+ rice straw + popped rice hull(SO:3S: IS) and concentrate+ rice straw+ground rice hull(SO:3S: IS) to compare both rice straw alone and combination with rice hull. Eating and ruminating time of steers fed concentrate+ rice straw(SO:50), concentrate+ rice straw + popped rice hull(50:35:15) and concentrate + rice straw + ground rice hull(50:3S:15) were 78.8 and 338.4minlday; 98.0 and 362.5minlday, and 160 and 519.2min/day, respectively. When steers were fed popped rice hull and ground rice hull, time spent for both eating and ruminating was significantly increased(p <0.05). When steers fed popped and ground rice hull, number of ruminating chews and number of chews per rumination time were significantly decreased(p<0.05). The number of rumination boli and boli per rumination time had significantly decreased(p<0.05), but chewing time per boli, number of chew'S per bolus were significantly increased(p

Experiments were conducted to determine effects of whole and processed corns on in situ disappearance rates of nutrients in the rumen and in vitro degradability of dry matter by rumen microorganisms. Whole corn(WC) was processed into four different types; ground corn(GC), cracked corn(CC), flaked corn(FC), and soaked corn(SC). In the in situ experiment, the rate of ruminal DM disappearance after 48 hour incubation was highest in GC(76.1%) and lowest in WC and SC(12% ; P<0.01). The rate of ruminal CP disappearance after 48 hour incubation was highest in GC and CC(48 and 38%, respectively; P<0.01). The rate of ruminal OM disappearance after 48 hour incubation was highest in GC(76.14%) and lowest in WC and SC(11.82 and 12.26%, respectively; P<0.01). In the in vitro experiment, the two-stage incubation technique was used to measure digestibilities of whole and processed corns. The digestibility of DM was higher in GC, CC and FC(86.95, 85.84 and 82.29%, respectively) than in WC(15.36%; P<0.01).
This study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding a total mixed ration(TMR) of broiler litter(BL) and bakery by-product(BB) with additional BL or rice straw incorporated at 10% of dietary DM as a roughage source on behavior pattern, nutrient intake, digestibility, digestible nutrient intake, ruminal and blood parameters, and N balance of sheep. All the treatment diets were formulated to be isoenergetic[total digestible nutrients(TDN) 66.9%]. Compared with the conventional formulated feed - rice straw feeding system(control), feeding TMR with BL(T1) or rice straw(T2) at 10% of dietary DM resulted in reduced eating, ruminating and total chewing time(P<0.05), similar DM intake, low(P<0.05) digestible DM, OM, fiber and total nutrients intake, low(P<0.05) nutrients digestibilities except EE, similar ruminal characteristics(pH, VFA concentrations and ratios, efficiency of carbohydrate fermentation, NH3-N), and favorable N digestion and retention. There were no differences in the above parameters between T1 and T2 with the exception of increased(P<0.05) eating, ruminating and total chewing time for T2. These results suggested that a TMR of BL and BB with or without rice straw may replace the conventional formulated feed and rice straw in ruminant diets successfully and furthermore feeding the TMR with rice straw made sheep behavior pattern more favorable.
The effects of concentrate to roughage ratios on duration and frequencies of rumination and chewing in Hanwoo steers were determined. Five Hanwoo steers fitted with rumen fistula were used to evaluate the effects of concentrate to rice straw ratio on eating and ruminating behavior. Experimental diets were formulated with different concentrate to rice straw ratios(50 : 50, 60: 40, 70: 30, 80: 20, 90: 10). When level of roughage feed was increased by 10, 20, 30, 40 to 50% of total dry matter of the diet, total chewing time was increased linearly from 286.99, 321.09, 390.29, 406.63 to 423.30 min/d, which was mainly due to increased ruminating time from 204.91 to 342.80 min/day. However, the level of roughage did not affect eating time. The number of chews per day for rumination and number of chews per rumination were significantly decreased(p < 0.05) as roughage level was increased. In summary, the duration and frequencies of rumination in Hanwoo increased with increased rice straw level.
The objective of this study was to confirm biohydrogenation of linoleic acid and stearic acid production by mixed men fungi and bacteria. In mixed fungal biohydrogenation study, when linoleic acid solution was added to fungal culture (after 24 hr pre-incubation), all linoleic acids were converted to trans-11 vaccenic acid via cis-9, trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid production within 24 hr period of incubation. All linoleic acid solution was hydrogenated to trans-11 vaccenic acid within 24 hr incubation and this was continued until the end of incubation (48 hr). Both treatments (added linoleic acid solution or the same amount of solution without containing linoleic acid into fungal cultures) produced the similar amount of stearic acid. In contrast, 100% of linoleic acid solution was hydrogenated to stearic acid in mixed bacterial culture. It is concluded that the end product of mixed fungal biohydrogenation of linoleic acid is trans-11 vaccenic acid whereas mixed bacteria produced stearic acid as an end product of their biohydrogenation.

A study was conducted to determine the effect of alcohol-fermented feedstuff formulated with byproducts on the fermentation characteristics and dry matter disappearance in the rumen. Dietary treatments were either a soybean curd-based alcohol-fermented feedstuff(AFS) and brewery grain-based alcohol-fermented feedstuff(AFB). The AFS and AFB are composed of 50% commercial beef cattle feed, 50% soybean curd dreg, 5% molasses and 0.5% yeast, and 25% commercial beef cattle feed, 25% brewery grain, 25% soybean curd dreg, 25% corn grit, 5% molasses and 0.5% yeast, respectively. The ruminally cannualted Korean cattle were utilized to investigate the change of ammonia, pH alcohol, volatile fatty acids, and DM digestibility at 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 hr after feeding. The rumen ammonia concentrations were significantly lower in AFS and AFB with incubation time, especially at 6 hr incubation(AFS, 0.7 mg/dl; AFB, 1.5 mg/dl; control 2.5 mg/dl). Lower rumen pH was observed in AFS and AFB during the early stage of incubation, but no significant difference was found at late stage of incubation. The total VFA concentrations were not affected by diet treatments at 2 hr incubation time, but the concentration significantly decreased after that. The dry matter disappearance was significantly lower in AFS and AFB during the early stage of incubation. However, the dry matter disappearance of AFS and AFB was similar to that of control during the late stage of incubation. It is concluded that the industrial byproducts such as soybean curd dreg and brewery grain were effective materials to make an alcohol fermented feedstuffs and resulted in better fermentation characteristics in the rumen when both were applied to Hanwoo.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of whole grain barley cracked feed on eating behaviors of Hanwoo steers during finish fattening period. Thirty Hanwoo steers (28 months old) were assigned to five dietary treatments: control (C: normal concentrate as a basal diet), and four feeding groups [T1: 10% addition of whole grain barley cracked (WGBC) feed, T2: 20% addition of WGBC, T3: 30% addition of WGBC and T4: 40% WGBC during the finish fattening period, respectively]. The results of eating behaviors for 48 hours are summarized as follows: Total intake (roughage + concentrate) was higher in the order of T4 > T1 > C > T3 > T2 (P<0.05). Eating time was higher in the order of T4 > T3 > C > T1 > T2 (P<0.01). Ruminating time was higher in the order of T4 > T1 > C > T3 > T2 (P<0.05). But resting time was higher in the order of T2 > T1 > C > T3 > T4. The chewing time including eating and ruminating time was higher in the order of T4 > T3 > C > T1 > T2 (P<0.01). Number of bolus, number of total chews, number of chews/bolus and feed value index were highest in T4 (P<0.05). Ruminating time per bolus was highest in C, and T3 was the lowest (P<0.05) as compared to others. Number of bolus per minute was highest in T3, and C is the lowest (P<0.05). Eating rate and chewing efficiency were highest in T2 (P<0.01, 0.05), but ruminating efficiency was higher in T1 than others. The group behavior was higher in the order of resting(78.5%) > ruminating(11.4%) > eating(10.1%). The stand resting of group behavior was higher in the order of T3 > C > T2 > T1 > T4.
