  • In order to investigate the relationships between the responses of four crops (rice, soybeans, potatoes, and red pepper) to acid rain, the simulated acid rain(SAR) of pH 1.8, 2.3, and 2.8 and normal rain of pH 6.0 were applied from 30 days after emergence to harvest at the two-week interval for rice, soybeans and red pepper and at a week interval for potatoes. SAR of pH 1.8 and 2.3 caused brown spots in the leaves of rice, soybeans, and red pepper and the damages were severer as the pH of SAR lowered, while no visual damages were observed in potatoes. The SARs did not affect chlorophyll content of rice and potatoes, while chlorophyll content of soybeans and red pepper decreased as the pH of SAR lowered. Photosynthetic activity was not significantly different among the pHs of SAR in rice, while decreased as pHs of SAR lowered from pH 2.8 to 1.8 in soybeans, potatoes, and red pepper. Yield of rice, soybeans, and potatoes was not affected by the pHs of SAR, but in red pepper the length, diameter, and weight of a fruit, the number of fruits per plant, and total matured fruit yield decreased as the pHs of SAR lowered. In rice and potatoes visual damages caused by SAR did not correlated with other observed traits. However, visual damages were negatively correlated with chlorophyll content and photosynthetic activity of soybeans and photosynthetic activity and yield of red pepper.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the change yield and grain quality in rice caused by damages of brown planthopper (Bph) on major agronomic traits at the ripening stage. A major agronomic traits such as culm length, panicle length, number of panicle and number of grain per panicles was no-significant difference compared hopperburn area (HBA) and moderately damaged area (MDA) by brown planthopper with non-damaged area (NDA). but, the ripeing ratio and yield in HBA and MDA was significantly decreased. The perfect rice of brown rice in HBA and MDA was also lowered than the NDA and the immatured grain among imperfect rice in damaged area by BPH was significantly increased than in the NDA. Among the traits related with palatability of cooked rice, the amylose content was not affected by damage of brown planthopper, whereas, the protein content was significantly increased in the HBA and MDA. additionally, Peak viscosity in HBA and MDA is lower than the NDA, and setback was increased. In most cases, there was negative on yield and grain quality by the damage of brown planthopper at the ripening stage. Thus, the rice product harvested in damaged area should be separated with that in non damaged area for grain market quality of milled rice.

  • We surveyed disease outbreak status that has recently become a problem in organic tomatoes and cucurbit in plastic greenhouse that were grown without spraying pesticides during the plastic greenhouse growing season of 2015 to 2019. It was found that the incidence of leaf mold, tomato spotted wilt virus, and tomato chlorosis virus disease was severe in tomato, and disease incidence of powdery mildew and zucchini yellow mosaic virus were severe in Cucurbit. The disease outbreak was found to be faster and more severe in crops grown in pesticide-free cultivation plastic greenhouses than in plastic greenhouses that are cultivated in general using pesticides. In particular, the occurrence of viral diseases mediated by thrips and aphids was found to be severely damaged. Therefore, in order to produce good organic products, it is important to effectively control pests, and in order to minimize the damage caused by disease, sanitation and physical blocking, and comprehensively utilize organic materials or microorganisms to prevent them.

  • Melon necrotic spot virus (MNSV) is a very destructive disease to melon (Cucumis melo) plants. A MNSV was isolated from melon leaf showing necrotic spot symptoms at the plastic house in Naju, Korea in 2009. The isolate, designated as MNSV-Me, was identified and characterized by biological responses on several host plants, immuno captured RT-PCR and partial nucleotide sequencings of the genome. To evaluate MNSV-Me resistance in melon, thirty-five melon cultivars were mechanically inoculated on the cotyledon of the seedlings with the virus. MNSV-Me produced necrotic spots on the inoculated leaves of the all melon cultivars tested. Twenty-five cultivars were susceptible to the virus and they showed systemic necrotic spots on the leaves and/or necrosis longer than 3 cm in length on the stems within about forty days after inoculation. Five cultivars gave moderate resistance, no symptoms on the upper leaves but necrosis on the stem shorter than 3 cm in length. In an evaluation of MNSV-Me resistance in melon cultivars, 'Elstitan', 'Elsluxery', 'Betalichihage', 'Betalichi' and 'Womderfulhagae 1st' were found to have resistance by showing only faint necrosis on their stems.

  • In grape vineyards, whitish spots in a cloud shape have been often observed on the fruit surface recently. However, the cause of the halo spot symptom was unknown, hindering countermeasures to be properly designed for the control. A small hole in the middle of the formless halo spot remained as a scar formed by oviposition of the thrips. It became later a suberized scab, which is separated from the epidermal cells on the surface either to be retained on or to be detached from it as time proceeds. Such a symptom is distinguished from the feeding damages caused by thrips or true bugs occurring on the grape fruits. With DNA extracted from the egg-shell found in the hole, molecular diagnosis by amplifying an ITS2 region with universal primers and subsequently digesting the PCR product by an restriction enzyme (RsaI) revealed that the egg was laid by Frankliniella occidentalis. In addition, a mitochondrial COI sequence confirmed that the halo spot symptom was formed by its oviposition. This study provides accurate information on the peculiar damage symptom caused by oviposition of F. occidentalis that could be useful in the control strategies for this pest in vineyards.

  • Thrips infest hot peppers (Capsicum annuum) cultivating in open fields and give serious economic damages. This study reports their yearly occurrence from transplanting to harvest at three different places in Andong, an intense hot pepper-cultivating area. Two main occurrence peaks were detected in June and September. Two dominant thrips were the flower flowers, Frankliniella occidentalis and F. intonsa, which comprised of over 87% of the total occurring thrips. Other thrips did not follow the occurrence peaks of the two dominant species. Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) was detected from the dominant two species, in which higher viruliferous rate was recorded in F. intonsa. Although the hot peppers were the resistant varieties against TSWV, some of them cultivating in the fields exhibited a characteristic disease symptom infected by the virus over the growing seasons. TSWV was isolated from the viruliferous thrips and assessed in NSs sequences encoded in S RNA segment of the virus. Compared to the known resistance breaking (RB) strains, the TSWV isolated from the viruliferous thrips in Andong did not show any RB mutations.

  • A green-house experiment was conducted to know the performance of Chinese cabbage and radish applied with simulated acid rain(SAR) on the leaf and/or soil. The pHs of SAR and normal water were 2.7 and 6.0, respectively. The pHs of SAR and normal water applied on leaf/soil were 6.0/6.0, 6.0/2.7, 2.7/6.0, and 2.7/2.7 and they were applied fifteen times at the two- or three-day intervals with 10mm at a time. Leaf application of SAR caused brown spots in both crops, while no such symptoms were observed in soil application. SAR applied on the leaf or soil increased chlorophyll content significantly in Chinese cabbage, but slightly in radish. Leaf or soil application of SAR did not affect N, P, and K concentrations in both crops. The sulfur content in radish leaf increased by leaf or soil application of SAR, while in the root it increased by soil application only. Yield of Chinese cabbage was not affected by SAR, while both leaf and root yields of radish were significantly reduced by leaf application of SAR compared with soil application.

  • In Ulrung floral community the growing environments and nutritive values of wild garlic was investigated. The wild garlic, grown for $3{\sim}4\;years$ in community area, were able to develope bulbs. The bulbs with 2 leaves had the highest ratio of propotion as 75.1% of share among the distribution of bulbs with completely developed leaves and 1 leaf-bulbs and 3 leaves-bulbs had 19.6% and 5.3%, respectively. Also the 2 or 3 leaves-bulbs indicated the better growth states in the part of shoot and bulbs than 1 leaf-bulbs, and there was a significant defferences in each growth between 2 leaves-and 3 leaves-bulbs. On the wild garlics we cannot find out insect injuries. However, there was deseases with symptoms of leaf-spots and lesion from May to June. At first it made a small spots on the leaves, followed by senescence at arrounding area of spots, and then it expanded to whole leaf. This pathogenic bacterium was supposed to be a member of Aristastoma. The contents of crude protein, fat, and carbohydrate in each portion of wild garlics decresed in the order of shoot, expanded leaves and bulbs. On the contrary, crude fibers increased in the same order and so it is not suitable for human consumption nutritional value. However, because the shoots of wild garlics have more than the other Allium sp., the shoots will be a good quality food stuff.

  • Recently, the concentration of fine dust causative substances (NOx, VOC, etc.) in the atmosphere has increased, resulting in high concentrations of tropospheric ozone (O3) and increased damage to crops. This study aimed to analyze the impact of high concentrations of ozone gas on the initial growth of rice plants and investigate the relationship between ozone damage resistance and anthocyanin biosynthesis. To achieve this, rice plants were exposed to elevated levels of ozone g as using an ozone chamber, and subsequent measurements were taken to assess changes in growth, the percentage of damaged leaves, and the anthocyanin content. The results revealed that varieties with a higher proportion of damaged leaves exhibited a relative increase in anthocyanin biosynthesis following ozone exposure. Notably, detrimental effects on growth, such as decreased biomass, were mitigated. Additionally, Anthocyanin biosynthesis genes in rice were listed by selecting homologous genes from Arabidopsis and Maize. The expression of OsF3H2, OsFLS1 and OsLDOX3 was induced during ozone treatment. This result is expected to contribute to the study of the protection mechanism of plants from ozone damage.
