  • This study was carried out to elucidate the symptom of leaf injury to ozone and to determine varietal difference to ozone injury in rice and soybean plant. Ozone was produced by electrostatic discharge in oxygen and was monitored by UV absorption ozone analyzer. The rice leaves were spotted red and rolling leaf edge, discolored to reddish brown or yellowish white in response to ozone, and the leaves that were severely stressed were withered from the tip of leaf. The soybean ones were also discolored to lemon yellow, yellow or dark brown. The leaf injury in both rice and soybean was clearly appeared at the reverse side of leaf and in lower leaves. Milyang 23 and Nonganbyeo among rice cultivars tested were resistant to ozone, but Chucheongbyeo was resistant to it. The ratio of leaf injury was increased and chlorophyll content was decreased as the extension of ozone exposure from 2 to 8 hours in rice. Keunolkong and Danyeopkong among soybean cultivars tested showed resistant reaction to ozone, but Kwangankong and Muhankong were susceptible to it. It was observed that the soybean plants grown for 45 days after seeding were severely damaged by ozone than those of other growth stages.

  • Ethylene production and inhibition of ethylene production by Ag ion were investigated in ornamental trees injured by $SO_2$ exposure. Concurrently the sulfur content of leaves was measured to examine the absorption of $SO_2$. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Ethylene production by leaves of Pinus thunbergii and Cedrus deodara showed peak after 2 - day exposures to $SO_2$ when visible injury was not appeared ; whereas in Taxus cuspidata showed continuos increase even after 4 - day exposures and was markedly stimulated at leaves appeared visible injury. The amount of ethylene production by leaves of Cedrus deodara and Taxus cuspidata was higher than those of Pinus thunbergii. 2. Ag ion applied on leaves at concentration of 100 ppm $A_gNO_3$ significantly inhibited ethylene production by leaves of Cedrus deodara either $A_gNO_3$ sprayed before $SO_2$ exposure or after leaves were injured by $SO_2$ exposure. 3. The sulfur content of leaves after 5 - day exposures to $SO_2$ showed higher in Pinus thunbergii and Cedrus deodara than in Taxus cuspidata, but there were no great differences in the sulfur content among untreated species.

  • The study has been carried to describe a new disease of strawberry in Korea, which was found in 1977 at Kimhae. Symptom of the disease occurred mainly on leaves as showing large annular brown spots or 'V' shaped brown lesions. Many of dark pycnidia were observed from the both side of old lesions. The pathogen was identified as Dendrophoma obscurans (Ell. & Ev) Anderson which has not been described in Korea as a pathogen of strawberry disease. The common name of the disease was given, temporaly, as Annular leaf blight of strawberry. In the laboratory study, light was necessary for the production of pycnidia and potato dextrose agar was the best media for tile pycnidia formation. There were some difference on resistance to the disease among 48 tested strawberry varieties though none of them shelved highly resistant reaction, and the older leaves showed more susceptible reaction than younger ones.

  • The buds of Hayward/Bruno tree were damaged from $-7^{\circ}C$ but serious damage was found on the buds treated at $-15^{\circ}C$ and $19^{\circ}C$. The bark tissue was more suceptible to low temperature than the bud. The trees were survived and bursted their at all on the top of the graft union and new shoots were formed from the rootstock of the tree. Yellowish area on the leaf surface was found, which is believed that as a result of low temperature. From these, the kiwifruit trees must be grafted with cold tolerant rootstocks will be clarified in future.

  • To study the effects of sulfur dioxide on the plant; Barly, wheat, soybean sweet potato, cucumber, egg plant, red pepper, tomato, lettuce, water melon, castor bean, grape and lily were exposed to the different levels of sulfur dioxide gas(0.1, 0.25, 0.50, $1.0mg/{\ell}/hr$) The symptoms of damage, ratios of destroyed leaf, sulfur content and absorption amounts of the gas by leaves were investigated 1. According to the increasing concentration of the gas ratios of destroyed leaf were increased in all plants. The ratios of destroyed leaf were shown by egg plant at $0.1mg/{\ell}/hr$ of $SO_2$ were 30 percent, and no visible injuries were shown by the wheat potato, castor bean, water melon, lily at $0.25mg/{\ell}/hr$. 2. Gray and red brown spots between the vein nerve shown by barly and wheat leaf; leaf burn by soybean, potato, sweat potato, castor bean, egg plant, red pepper, tomato and grape; leaf withering from the leaf tips by the lettuce, water melon, lily. 3. The volums of the gas absorption by cucumber, egg plant, red peper, castor he an were more than $10{\ell}/hr$, however less than $2{\ell}/hr$, be lettuce, water melon, grape, barly and wheat. 4. According to the increasing concentration of sulfur dioxide gas, sulfur contents in leaf were increased in all plants, however volums of absorption gas were decreaed. 5. According to the increase of sulfur content in leaf, ratios of destroyed leaf were increased. 6. Positive correlation was shown between total and water soluble sulfur content in leaf.

  • In June 2019, Angelica acutiloba plants showing virus-like symptoms such as chlorotic local lesion and mosaic on the leaves were found in a greenhouse in Nonsan, South Korea. To identify the causal virus, we collected 6 symptomatic A. acutiloba leaf samples and performed reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis using specific detection primers for three reported viruses including tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). RT-PCR results showed that five symptomatic samples were positive for TSWV. Mechanical sap inoculation of one of the collected TSWV isolate (TSWV-NS-AG28) induced yellowing, chlorosis and mosaic symptoms in A. acutiloba and necrotic local lesions and mosaic in Solanaceae species. Phylogenetic analysis based on the complete genome sequences showed that TSWV-NS-AG28 had a maximum nucleotide identity with TSWVNS-BB20 isolated from butterbur in Nonsan, South Korea. To our knowledge, this is the first report of TSWV infection in A. acutiloba.

  • In order to investigate the effect of $AgNO_3$ pretreatment on reducing $SO_2$ injury in leaves of Forsythia koreana, changes of pH, chlorophyll content, peroxidase activity, sulfur content, and stomatal behaviour in leaves were examined. 1. $AgNO_3$ sprayed at 200 ppm or above increased black spot development in lower epidermis of leaves. But pretreatment with 100 ppm $AgNO_3$ significantly reduced de foliation and visible injury rate of leaves exposed to $SO_2$. 2. $AgNO_3$ pretreatment prevented lowering pH and decreasing chlorophyll content induced by $SO_2$ injury in leaves. But both $AgNO_3$ pretreatment and $SO_2$ exposure increased peroxidase activity in leaves. 3. $AgNO_3$ pretreatment did not affect reducing $SO_2$ absorption and stomatal opening in leaves exposed to $SO_2$.

  • The practical monitoring was performed to survey the mortalities in aquaculture farms of olive flounder, rockfish, rainbow trout, Japanese eel, white shrimp and abalone in South Korea from May to November, 2011. The aquatic organism disease inspectors, who have the national licenses for the diagnosis and prevention of aquatic disease and have close relationship with the farms, investigated the rates and causes of mortalities according to the standard manual. In 70 flounder farms, the cumulative mortalities rate was 27.9%, and the mortalities were caused by scuticociliatosis, streptococcosis, VHS, non-infectious loss, vibriosis and gliding bacterial disease. The moralities rate of 30 rockfish farms was 13.6%, and those were mainly contributed by gill flukes and streptococcosis. Most of mortalities of rainbow trout were caused by non-infectious loss and protozoan white spot disease. The mortalities rate of Japanese eel was 0.6% by edwardsiellosis, protozoan white spot disease and gill flukes. The loss rate of white shrimp was 71.2%, and most of them was related with non-infectious ones, such as carnivalization, transportation loss, and the rest was caused by viral white spot disease. The mortalities rate in the abalone farms was 10.7% and all of them were related with non-infectious loss.

  • In order to find out the cause of plant injury, the symptom of plant injury, and contents of element concerned in the plant were analysed. Also, a case study was conducted to find out the factor of plant injury at a agriculture and industry complex in Gyeongsang province in 2004. The distribution of isomeric curve was made with meteorological data, toxic gas concentration exhausted from pollution source. The general symptom of plant injury by ammonia gas was dry and dead of leaves with white color. At low concentration of ammonia gas, plant leaf showed spots of reddish brown. The characteristic of plant injury symptom by hydrogen fluoride gas was that the symptom was appeared at the edge of leaf. The isomeric curve of sulfur dioxide at the region, where the plant was damaged, showed that the area was affected by exhausted gas from the pollution source. Especially, this area was affected more deeply at summer than any other season.
