First Record of the Bothid Flounder Arnoglossus polyspilus (Bothidae, Pleuronectiformes) from Korea (한국산 둥글넙치과 어류 1미기록종, Arnoglossus polyspilus)

  • A specimen of Arnoglossus polyspilus (G$\ddot{u}$nther) (229.0 mm standard length) belonging to the family Bothidae, collect from the coastal waters of Jeju Island, represents the first record of the species from Korea. This species is characterized by having caudal fin with two simple rays on both upper and lower margins, several anterior dorsal fin rays somewhat elongated, upper jaw extending to below anterior 1/3 of lower eye, and one gill raker on the upper limb of the first gill arch. We add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean name, "No-rang-ban-jeom-ga-ja-mi".

  • First records of the two triglid fishes, Lepidotrigla hime and L. kishinouyei, are described on the basis of specimens collected from the South Sea of Korea. L. hime and L. kishinouyei are, closely similar to L. abyssalis and L. microptera in their proportional measurements, respectively. L. hime differs from L. abyssalis in having the rostral width broader than interorbital one, well developed spines of rostrum and long maxilla reaching to anterior margin of pupil. L kishinouyei differs from L. microptera in having a large and strong rostral spines and a jet black spot of pectoral fin inside.

  • The study has been carried to describe a new disease of strawberry in Korea, which was found in 1977 at Kimhae. Symptom of the disease occurred mainly on leaves as showing large annular brown spots or 'V' shaped brown lesions. Many of dark pycnidia were observed from the both side of old lesions. The pathogen was identified as Dendrophoma obscurans (Ell. & Ev) Anderson which has not been described in Korea as a pathogen of strawberry disease. The common name of the disease was given, temporaly, as Annular leaf blight of strawberry. In the laboratory study, light was necessary for the production of pycnidia and potato dextrose agar was the best media for tile pycnidia formation. There were some difference on resistance to the disease among 48 tested strawberry varieties though none of them shelved highly resistant reaction, and the older leaves showed more susceptible reaction than younger ones.

First Record of Fugu flavidus, from Korea (한국산 참복속 어류 1 미기록종 Fugu flavidus)

  • A puffer fish Fugu flavidus Li, Wang et Wang of Family Tetraodontidae was studied for the first time in Korea. Specimens were obtained from fish markets in Kunsan and Mokpo in February 1985 and June 1989. The Fugu flavidus is similar to F. obscurus and F. niphobles in morphometric characters, but differs from them in dorsal part of the body : yellowish-brown or greenish-brown, and covered with many round white spots which are clear in young and become indistinct as the fish grow. A new Korean name "Hwangjombok" is proposed for the F. flavidus.

New Record of Three Percoids (Pisces: Perciformes) from Cheju Island, Korea (제주도에서 출현한 농어목 어류의 3 미기록종)

  • Three species of the order Perciformes collected from coastal waters of Cheju Island, Korea were documented with photographs, all of which are newly known to Korea. Nemipterus bathybius Snyder, 1911 of the family Nemipteridae is distinguished by seven anal soft rays and the most upper ray at the caudal fin elongated. Cirrhitichthys aureus (Temminck et Schlegel, 1842) of the family Cirrhitidae (New Korean name: Hwangbokdom-kwa), is characterized by the five to six light black spots on the dorso-Iateral sides, 12 dorsal soft rays and a dorsal fin without spots and bands. Parapercis aurantiaca D$\ddot{o}$erlein, 1884 of the family Pinguipedidae, has several taxonomic characters. The dorsal spines and the soft rays of the dorsal fins were connected without a notch. The five to six dark yellow bands with the same size of eye length were shown on the lateral region. A new Korean name Kinsilkkoridom is proposed for the Nemipterus bathybius, and Cirrhitichthys aureus, Hwangbukdom, and Parapercis aurantiaca, Hwangssangdonggari.

First Record of the Annular Sole, Brachirus annularis(Soleidae, Pleuronectiformes) from Korea (한국산 납서대과 어류 1미기록종, Brachirus annularis)

  • This is the first report of Brachirus annularis (Pleuronectiformes: Soleidae) from Korea. A specimen of B. annularis (229.0 mm standard length) was firstly collected by drift gill net at a fishing ground locating between Jejudo and Geomundo Islands, the southern coast of Korea on 31 March, 2019. This species was characterized by having five large, deep colored patches on the ocular side of body, each patch outlined by dark brown ring, united dorsal and anal fins jointed with caudal fin, and short pectoral fin. We add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean names, "Eol-luk-seo-dae-sok" and "Eol-luk-seo-dae" for the genus and species, respectively.

  • Some asteroids were collected at a depth of 30 m in Chejudo Island. Of which two species were identified as Luidia maculata Muller et Troschel, 1842 and Linckia laevigata Linne, 1758. These species are turned out to be new to the Korean fauna and redescribed on the morphological characteristics with illustrations. Eighteen species of asteroids are reported to be distributed in the Chejudo Island of Korea.

  • Three specimens of Moolgarda seheli were collected for the first time from the southern coastal waters of Jeju Island in October 2010. This species is characterized by scales with a flexible membranous edge, a distinctive dark dot on the upper axis of the pectoral fin base, 39 lateral line scales, and 24~25 vertebrae. The newly proposed Korean name of the genus Moolgarda is "Cho-seung-kkori-sung-eo-sok" and that of M. seheli is "Cho-seung-kko-ri-sung-eo".

  • Two specimens of Apogon cookii of the family Apogonidae were collected from the coastal waters of Dokdo, Korea, and described as the first record from Korea. Specimens were caught by SCUBA diving using scoop net (length 33 cm, depth 63 cm) on October, 1997. The species differs from A. endekataenia in having 5 longitudinal stripes and a small black spot on the base of caudal fin. The new Korean name, "Da-seot-jul-eol-ge-bi-neul" as new Korean name of Apogon cookii.

  • A single specimen (705 mm in standard length) of Lampris guttatus ($Br{\ddot{u}}nnich$, 1788), belonging to the family Lampridae, was firstly collected from the coast of Samcheok, East Sea, Korea in November 2014. This species was characterized by having oval shaped body, vivid scarlet fins and jaw and pale white spots on body irregularly. We propose a new Korean name, "Buk-pyeong-chi-gwa", "Buk-pyeong-chi-sok" and "Buk-pyeong-chi" for the family, genus and species, respectively.
