  • The granites in the Jeomchon area can be divided into hornblende biotite granite (Hbgr), deformed biotite granite (Dbgr), deformed pinkish biotite granite(Dpbgr), biotite granite (Btgr), and granite porphyry(Gp). These granites show metaluminous, 1-type and calc-alkaine characteristics from their whole-rock chemistry. Hbgr and Dbgr belong to ilmenite-series granitoids, but Gp to magnetite-series. Dpbgr and Btgr show the intermediate nature between ilmenite- and magnetite-series. Tectonic discriminations indicate that Hbgr and Dbgr were formed in active continental margin environment, whereas Dpbgr, Btgr, and Gp in post-orogenic and/or anorogenic rift-related environment. From the Harker diagrams major oxide contents of Hbgr and Dbgr show a continuous variation with $SiO_2$, indicating that they are genetically correlated with each other. On the other hand, any correlation of major oxides variation cannot be recognized among Dpbgr, Btgr and Gp. It seems like that Hbgr and Dbgr were derived from a same parent granitic magma, judging from their occurrence of outcrop, mineral composition as well as whole-rock chemistry. Variation trends of major oxide contents between Hbgr and Baegnok granodiorite are very similar and continuous. If the two granites were derived from a cogenetic magma, there exists a possibility that the granitic bodies had been separated by Btgr and Gp of Cretaceous age. Three stages of the granitic intrusions are understood in the Jeomchon area. After the intrusion of Hbgr and Dbgr during middle to late Paleozoic time, Dpbgr emplaced into the area next, and finally Btgr and Gp intruded during Cretaceous time. Tectonic movement accompanying shear and/or thrust deformation seems likely to have occurred bewteen the intrusions of Dpbgr and Btgr.

  • The clay minerals such as sericite, pyrophyllite, chlorite and smectite abundantly occur in the Bobae pottery stone mine in Pusan. In this study, the processes which are responsible for the formation of these minerals were studied by examing their occurrence and mineralogical properties. The so-called pottery stone of this mine is characterized by the predominance of sericite and quartz. The sericite of the pottery stone is mostly $2M-{1}$ type. And many of quartz particles are smaller than a few micron in diameter. The pottery stone also contained a small amount of pyrophyllite and muscovite. The pottery stone deposit occurs within the Cretaceous rhyodacite and is particularly well developed near the contact with the quartz porphyry which intrudes the rhyodacite. The fact implies that the pottery stone is the product of hydrothermal alteration of the rhyodacite by the intrusion of quartz porphyry. The pottery stone was formed by the alteration that accompanies the dissociation of feldspar and chlorite in parent rocks and subsequent formation of sericte and quartz. Smectite, laumontite and kaolinite occur locally within the altered rocks. These minerals were formed after formation of pottery stone. It is noteworthy that beidellite occurs as a pink-colored clay from the altered rocks in the mine.

  • We examined high-resolution seismic data, side scan sonar data, surface sediments, and vibrocore samples from a sand ridge off the western part of Dukjuk-Do in Gyeonggi Bay, with the aim of interpretation of seismic stratigraphy and sedimentary environment. Based on the seismic data, the deposited sands are divided into three sedimentary units. 14C age data indicate that the top sequence (sequence I) formed at 5000-6000 yr BP, when a transgression resulted in strong shifting tides. Analyses of the vibrocore samples indicate that sequence II is a paleo-mudflat layer of intertidal sediments dominated by mud. Sequence III consists of terrestrial sediments that are presumed to have been deposited at the end of the Pleistocene, unconformably overlying the acoustic bedrock and Mesozoic granite. The side scan sonar data indicate that sand waves were formed on the seabed on top of the sand ridge. Generally, this is the direction of $N20^{\circ}E$, which coincides with the direction of tidal flow. Sand ripples occur away from the top of the sand ridge and are distributed homogeneously across a sandy slope. Vibrocore analyses indicate that the surface sediments and core sediments (samples VC-1, -2, and -3) are homogeneous, without any internal structures, and are characterized by a mixture of medium and fine sand (1-$2{\phi}$), respectively.

  • This study investigates the formation mechanism of columnar joints at the Sanin Kaigan Geopark in Japan based on its morphology, rock type and igneous structure. Columnar joints distribute to five areas of three prefectures. That is, Kyogasaki, Byobuiwa, Tateiwa and Kyugenkado in Kyotango area of Kyoto prefecture; Genbudo and Kinumaki Shrine in Toyooka City of Hyogo prefecture; Yoroinosode, Takanosushima, Mini-Yoroinosode in Kamicho Town of Hyogo prefecture; Miooshima and Nagasakihana, Shitaara Domon, Kuzakuishi, Moroyose dyke in Shinonsencho Town of Hyogo prefecture; Shirawara dyke in Iwamicho Town in Tottori prefecture. Igneous structures are divided into three types: lava flow, sill and dyke. Lithologies are divided into five types including basalt, andesite, dacite, rhyolite, and quartz porphyry. Lava flow shows colonnade and entablature. However, entablature is not seen in the sills and dykes in the area. Although the polygons of columnar joint vary from tetragon to octagon, hexagon is most frequently found. The width of colonnades ranges from 10cm to 1m, but their size does not correlate with its $SiO_2$ contents. Meanwhile, their size and morphology at single site are comparatively uniform.

  • A dynamic fluid-structure-soil interaction analysis method is developed to investigate the effects of translational and/or rocking motions on the seismic response of flexible rectangular liquid storage tanks founded on the deformable ground. The governing equation for the dynamics of 3-D rectangular tanks subjected to the translational and/or rocking motion is abtained by applying Rayleigh-Ritz method. The dynamic stiffness matrices of a rigid rectangular foundation resting on the surface of a stratum overlaid bedrock are calculated by hyperelement method. The seismic responses of 3-D flexible tank model founded on the deformable ground is calculated by combining the governing equation for the fluid-tank system with the dynamic stiffness matrix of th rigid surface foundation.

  • The Xiaoxinancha Cu-Au deposit in the Jilin province, located in NNE 800 km of Beijing, is hosted by diorite. The ore mineralization of Xiaoxinancha Cu-Au deposit show a stockwork occurrence that is concentrated on the potassic and phyllic alteration zones. The Xiaoxinancha Cu-Au deposit in the south is being mined with its reserves grading 0.8% Cu, 3.64 g/t Au and 16.8 g/t Ag and in the north, grading 0.63% Cu, 3.80 g/t Au and 6.8 glt Ag. The alteration assemblage occurs as a supergene blanket over deposit. Hydrothermal alteration at the Xiaoxinancha Cu-Au deposit is centered about the stock and was extensively related to the emplacement of the stock. Early hydrothermal alteration was dominantly potassic and followed by propylitic alteration. Chalcocite, often associated with hematite, account for the ore-grade copper, while chalcopyrite, bornite, quartz, epidote, chlorite and calcite constitute the typical gangue assemblage. Other minor opaque phases include pyrite, marcasite, native gold, electrum, hessite, hedleyite, volynskite, galenobismutite, covellite and goethite. Fluid inclusion data indicate that the formation of this porphyry copper deposit is thought to be a result of cooling followed by mixing with dilute and cooler meteoric water with time. In stage II vein, early boiling occurred at 497$^{\circ}$C was succeeded by the occurrence of halite-bearing type III fluid inclusion with homogenization temperature as much as 100$^{\circ}$C lower. The salinities of type 1II fluid inclusion in stage II vein are 54.3 to 66.9 wt.% NaCI + KCI equiv. at 383$^{\circ}$ to 495$^{\circ}$C, indicating the formation depth less than 1 km. Type I cupriferous fluids in stage III vein have the homogenization temperatures and salinity of 168$^{\circ}$ to 365$^{\circ}$C and 1.1 to 9.0 wt.% NaCI equiv. These fluid inclusions in stage III veins were trapped in quartz veins containing highly fractured breccia, indicating the predominance of boiling evidence. This corresponds to hydrostatic pressure of 50 to 80 bars. The $\delta$$^{34}S$ value of sulfide minerals increase slightly with paragenetic time and yield calculated $\delta$$^{34}S_{H2S}$ values of 0.8 to 3.7$\textperthousand$. There is no mineralogical evidence that fugacity of oxygen decreased, and it is thought that the oxygen fugacity of the mineralizing fluids have been buffered through reaction with magnetite. We interpreted the range of the calculated $\delta$$^{34}S_{H2S}$ values for sulfides to represent the incorporation of sulfur from two sources into the Xiaoxinancha Cu-Au hydrothermal fluids: (1) an isotopically light source with a $\delta$$^{34}S$ value of I to 2$\textperthousand$, probably a Mesozoic granitoid related to the ore mineralization. We can infer from the fact that diorite as the host rock in the Xiaoxinancha Cu-Au deposit area intruded plagiogranite; (2) an isotopically heavier source with a $\delta$$^{34}S$ value of > 4.0$\textperthousand$, probably the local porphyry.

  • In most current seismic design codes, design earthquake ground motions are defined by a reference spectrum, based on bedrock and site amplification factors that quantify the geotechnical dynamic conditions. Earthquake engineering bedrock is the fundamental geotechnical formation where the seismic waves are attenuated without amplification. To better define bedrock in an earthquake engineering context, shear wave velocity ($V_S$ ) data obtained from in-situ seismic tests were examined for several rock strata in Korea; these data were categorized by borehole drilling investigations. The $V_S$ values for most soft rock data in Korea are > 750 m/s, which is the threshold $V_S$ value for identifying engineering bedrock from a strong motion station. Conversely, VS values are < 750 m/s for 60% of $V_S$ data in weathered rock in Korea. Thus, the soft (or harder) rock strata below the weathered rock layer in Korea can be regarded as earthquake engineering bedrock.
