  • To analyze the interfacial property between the fiber and the matrix, work of adhesion was used generally that was calculated by surface energies. In this paper, it was determined what types of contact angle measurement methods were more accurate between static and dynamic contact angle measurements. 4 types of glass fiber and epoxy resin were used each other to measure the contact angle. The contact angle was measured using two types, static and dynamic contact angle methods, and work of adhesion, Wa was calculated to compare interfacial properties. The interfacial property was evaluated using microdroplet pull-out test. Generally, the interfacial property was proportional to work of adhesion. In the case of static contact angle, however, work of adhesion was not consistent with interfacial property. It is because that dynamic contact angle measurement comparing to static contact angle could delete the error due to microdroplet size to minimize the surface area as well as the meniscus measuring error.

  • This paper deals with detection and classification of leaf diseases for phenomics systems. As the smart farm systems of plants are increased, It is important to determine quickly the abnormal growth of plants without supervisors. This paper considers the color distribution and shape information of leaf diseases, and designs two deep leaning networks in training the leaf diseases. In the first step, color distribution of input image is analyzed for possible diseases. In the second step, the image is first partitioned into small segments using mean shift clustering, and the color information of each segment is inspected by the proposed Color Network. When a segment is determined as disease, the shape parameters of the segment are extracted and inspected by proposed Shape Network to classify the leaf disease types in the third step. According to the experiments with two types of diseases (frogeye/rust and tipburn) for apple leaves and iceberg, the leaf diseases are detected with 92.3% recall for a segment and with 99.3% recall for an input image where there are usually more than two disease segments. The proposed method is useful for detecting leaf diseases quickly in the smart farm environment, and is extendible to various types of new plants and leaf diseases without additional learning.

  • As the wind blades become larger, they tend to be made by mixing glass fiber and carbon fiber, and it is important to increase the properties of the adhesive which adheres the two materials. The physical properties of the adhesive vary depending on the content of the additive and curing conditions. In this study, the change in adhesion strength with the difference between the CNT (Carbon Nanotube) content of the epoxy adhesive and the humidity during curing was evaluated. GFRP and CFRP specimens were prepared and adhered using an epoxy adhesive, and to examine changes in characteristics with carbon nanotube contents and with the humidity during curing of the epoxy adhesive, adhesion strength was evaluated by dividing the difference between carbon nanotube content and humidity. To find out the change with the CNT contents, the intelaminar shear strength (ILSS) test was performed by dividing the contents of the CNT into 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 1 wt%, and to confirm the change with the humidity conditions, the adhesive was cured by dividing the humidity by 20, 50, and 80%. From the result of the experiment, the adhesive force decreased when the content was excessively large, although the adhesive property was enhanced by adding CNT to the epoxy adhesive. In addition, it was confirmed that the adhesion characteristics were not changed as the humidity increased.

  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the transportation sector in South Korea accounts for 16.5% of all CO2 emissions, and road transportation accounts for 96.5% of this sector's emissions in South Korea. Hence, constant research is being carried out on methods to reduce CO2 emissions from this sector. With the emerging use of smart crossings, attempts to monitor individual vehicles are increasing. Moreover, the potential commercial deployment of autonomous vehicles increases the possibility of obtaining individual vehicle data. As such, CO2 emission research was conducted at five signalized intersections in the Gangnam District, Seoul, using data such as vehicle type, speed, acceleration, etc., obtained from image detectors located at each intersection. The collected data were then applied to the MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES)-Matrix model-which was developed to obtain second-by-second vehicle activity data and analyze daily CO2 emissions from the studied intersections. After analyzing two large and three small intersections, the results indicated that 3.1 metric tons of CO2 were emitted per day at each intersection. This study reveals a new possibility of analyzing CO2 emissions using actual individual vehicle data using an improved analysis model. This study also emphasizes the importance of more accurate CO2 emission analyses.

  • Background: In recent years, introduction of novel immunosuppressive agents and its proper implementation for clinical practice have contributed to improving clinical outcomes of kidney transplantation (KT). Here, we report clinical outcomes of KTs and related risk factors. Methods: From July 1998 to June 2016, 354 KTs (182 from living and 172 from deceased donors) have been performed at Ulsan University Hospital. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical characteristics and outcomes of KT recipients, then estimated graft and patient survival rate were estimated and analyzed risk factors using Cox-regression. Results: The median follow-up period was 53 months (range; 3 to 220 months). The mean ages of recipients and donors were 45.0 years (SD, 12.5) and 44.7 years (SD, 13.6) years, respectively. During follow-up, 18 grafts were lost and 5- and 10-year death-censored graft survival was 96.7% and 91.5%, respectively. Biopsy-proven acute rejection (BPAR) occurred in 71 patients (55 cases of acute cellular rejection and 16 of antibody-mediated rejection). Cox-regression analysis showed that BPAR was a risk factor related to graft loss (hazard ratio [HR], 14.38; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.79 to 54.53; P<0.001). In addition, 15 patients died, and the 5- and 10-year patient survival was 97.2% and 91.9%, respectively. Age ≥60 years (HR, 6.03; 95% CI, 1.12 to 32.61; P=0.037) and diabetes (HR, 6.18; 95% CI, 1.35 to 28.22; P=0.019) were significantly related to patient survival. Conclusions: We experienced excellent clinical outcomes of KT in terms of graft failure and patient survival despite the relatively high proportion of deceased donors. Long-term and short-term clinical outcomes have improved in the last two decades.

  • A lot of clones of the genus Dioscorea have been introduced from some tropical and subtropical regions since 1997. In 33 clones of water yams (Dioscorea alata L.), some morphological characteristics were investigated at the field. Variation ranges of the total weight and tuber number per stump were within the ranges from 90 to 2,147 g with an average of 610 g ; and 1.3-4.7 with an average of 2.8, respectively. The color tones observed on the tuber-flesh were sorted into 3 color-categories, i.e., white, pale brown and pale purple, and those on leaves were sorted into 3 color-categories, i.e., green, heavy green and purplish green. Intraspecific genetic relationship of 19 variation types of the Yam classified by their external morphological characteristics such as leaf and tuber shape was assessed by DNA using random and specific primers. Twenty two out of 113 primers (100 random[10-mer] primers, two 15 mer [M13 core sequence, and (GGAT)4 sequence]) had been used in PCR-amplification. Only 12 primers, however, were successful in DNA amplification in all of the analyzed plants, resulting in 93 randomly and specifically amplified DNA fragments. The analyzed taxa showed very high polymorphisms(69 bands, 71.0%), allowing individual taxon to be identified based on DNA fingerprinting. Monomorphic bands among total amplified DNA bands of each primer was low under the 50%. Similarity indices between accessions were computed from PCR(polymerase chain reaction) data, and genetic relationships among intraspecific variations were closely related at the levels ranging from 0.66 to 0.90.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of temperature and photoperiod on the growth of Fagopyrum tataricum. It showed a tendency to promote the germination rate and plant height of tatary buckwheat under high temperature. Plant height and number of leaves were promoted in the order of 25>20>15>30℃ under the different temperature after 30 days of the planting. In the 10, 12, 14hr photoperiods at 20℃, plant height, number of leaves and dry weight were increased as much as photoperiod became long except by 16hr. Rutin contents was not regular both common and tatary buckwheat under the photoperiods. The rutin content in leaves was higher than stem. Compared to yield of tatary and common buckwheat, plant height, number of leaves, number of branch and stem diameter of tatary buckwheat increased more than common buckwheat. Especially, number of leaves was increased about 2.5 times more than common buckwheat. And there was a difference in about 2.1 times in grain weight and about 5.4 times in number of grains. Rutin content of plant parts was higher in the order of leaf>stem>grain in common buckwheat at the harvest. But it was higher with order of leaf>grain>stem in tatary buckwheat. Rutin content was 1469.8mg/100g in grain of tatary buckwheat. It was about 60 times higher than 22mg/100g in grain of common buckwheat.

  • This study was carried out to determine agronomic and genetic characteristics of the production process in tropical yams(Dioscorea alata L.). To make clear the possibility of cultivation of tropical yams in the Suwon area, the growth of the aboveground parts and the enlargement of tuber of Dioscorea alata, were investigated. The aboveground parts of the plants whose sprouted mother tuber were planted in late April were grown slowly until the 70-days after planting and grown rapidly after. From about 50-days after plantation, total length of vines slowly decreased due to the burning of the branch vines of lower modes. With regard to the branching progressed to 4th for the solo yam and to 6th for purple yam. The secondary branches tended to grow better. When the formation of daughter tubers was observed at the 50-days after planting, their enlargement was very slow. The rapid growth of tubers began at the 40-days and continued to the 90-days. General components such as protein, fiber, and lipid were higher in D. opposita rather than in D. alata. Hardness of D. alata was 2696.2 while that of D. opposita was 4946.9. Lightness of D. alata was 73.99, being higher than that of D. opposita.
