Development of Thin Film Electrode by Thermal CVD and Its Anode Characteristics for Lithium Battery (Thermal CVD법을 이용한 박막전극의 개발 및 리튬이차전지의 음극특성)

  • The carbon thin film was developed by the CVD method using the carbon source of toluene with the stream of argon gas at $800{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. Developed carbon thin films have the material loading of 0.27 mg($800^{\circ}C$), 0.80 mg($900^{\circ}C$), 2.3 mg($1000^{\circ}C$), and 2.9 mg($1100^{\circ}C$) for the disk of 15 mm diameter on single side. The characteristics of carbon thin film as the anode of thin film battery were evaluated using Li|C coin cell. Li|C($1100^{\circ}C$) coin cell has the first specific discharge and charge capacity of 953 mAh/g and 374 mAh/g, respectively, resulting the first Ah efficiency of 39.3 %. Capacity retention of the 5th cycle was 93.2 % indicating good cycleability. The carbon thin film prepared by CVD shows good specific capacity and cycleability, but low Ah efficiency.

The Effect of Substrate Roughness on the Fabrication and Performance of All-Solid-State Thin-Film Lithium-Ion Battery (기판의 표면 거칠기 특성이 전고상 리튬박막 이차전지의 제작 및 전기화학 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • All-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion batteries are important in the development of next-generation energy storage devices with high energy density. However, thin-film batteries have many challenges in their manufacturing procedure. This is because there are many factors, such as substrate selection, to consider when producing the thin film multilayer structure. In this study, we compare the fabrication and performance of all-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion batteries with a $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{1.5}O_4$ cathode/LiPON solid electrolyte/$Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ anode structure using stainless steel and Si substrates with different surface roughness. We demonstrate that the smoother the surface of the substrate, the thinner the thickness of the all-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion battery that can be made, and as a result, the corresponding electrochemical characteristics can be improved.

Synthesis of Hollow Mesoporous Carbon Nitride Spheres Using Polystyrene Spheres as Template (폴리스티렌 구형입자를 주형으로 이용한 할로우 메조포러스 질화탄소 구형입자의 합성)

  • Hollow mesoporous carbon nitride material with sphere shape was synthesized using polystyrene sphere as template and cyanamide as nitrogen and carbon atom sources via thermal treatment process. The process of the silica removal is not necessary because silica as template is not in use for the synthesis of hollow mesoporous carbon nitride material and any solvents are also not in use. The size of polystyrene spheres was about 170 nm. Hollow diameter and wall thickness were 82 nm and 13 nm, respectively, in hollow mesoporous carbon nitride sphere. Surface area, mesopore size and pore volume of hollow mesoporous carbon nitride material was $188m^2g^{-1}$, 3.8 nm and $0.35cm^3g^{-1}$, respectively. The wall in hollow sphere has graphitic structure. Hollow mesoporous carbon nitride material has potential applications in the area of fuel cell, catalysis, photocatalysis, electroemmision device, etc.

Nanoscale Pattern Formation of Li2CO3 for Lithium-Ion Battery Anode Material by Pattern Transfer Printing (패턴전사 프린팅을 활용한 리튬이온 배터리 양극 기초소재 Li2CO3의 나노스케일 패턴화 방법)

  • For the past few decades, as part of efforts to protect the environment where fossil fuels, which have been a key energy resource for mankind, are becoming increasingly depleted and pollution due to industrial development, ecofriendly secondary batteries, hydrogen generating energy devices, energy storage systems, and many other new energy technologies are being developed. Among them, the lithium-ion battery (LIB) is considered to be a next-generation energy device suitable for application as a large-capacity battery and capable of industrial application due to its high energy density and long lifespan. However, considering the growing battery market such as eco-friendly electric vehicles and drones, it is expected that a large amount of battery waste will spill out from some point due to the end of life. In order to prepare for this situation, development of a process for recovering lithium and various valuable metals from waste batteries is required, and at the same time, a plan to recycle them is socially required. In this study, we introduce a nanoscale pattern transfer printing (NTP) process of Li2CO3, a representative anode material for lithium ion batteries, one of the strategic materials for recycling waste batteries. First, Li2CO3 powder was formed by pressing in a vacuum, and a 3-inch sputter target for very pure Li2CO3 thin film deposition was successfully produced through high-temperature sintering. The target was mounted on a sputtering device, and a well-ordered Li2CO3 line pattern with a width of 250 nm was successfully obtained on the Si substrate using the NTP process. In addition, based on the nTP method, the periodic Li2CO3 line patterns were formed on the surfaces of metal, glass, flexible polymer substrates, and even curved goggles. These results are expected to be applied to the thin films of various functional materials used in battery devices in the future, and is also expected to be particularly helpful in improving the performance of lithium-ion battery devices on various substrates.

Comparison of Characteristics of Electrodeposited Lithium Electrodes Under Various Electroplating Conditions (다양한 전착조건에서 제작된 리튬 전극의 특성 연구)

  • A lithium is the lightest metal on the earth. It has some attractive characteristics as a negative electrode material such as a low reduction potential (-3.04 V vs. SHE) and a high theoretical capacity ($3,860mAh\;g^{-1}$). Therefore, it has been studied as a next generation anode material for high energy lithium batteries. The thin lithium electrode is required to maximize the efficiency and energy density of the battery, but the physical roll-press method has a limitation in manufacturing thin lithium. In this study, thin lithium electrode was fabricated by electrodeposition under various conditions such as compositions of electrolytes and the current density. Deposited lithium showed strong relationship between process condition and its characteristics. The concentration of electrolyte affects to the shape of deposited lithium particle. As the concentration increases, the shape of particle changes from a sharp edged long one to a rounded lump. The former shape is favorable for suppressing dendrite formation and the elec-trode shows good stripping efficiency of 92.68% (3M LiFSI in DME, $0.4mA\;cm^{-2}$). The shape of deposited particle also affected by the applied current density. When the amount of current applied gets larger the shape changes to the sharp edged long one like the case of the low concentration electrolyte. The combination of salts and solvents, 1.5M LiFSI + 1.5M LiTFSI in DME : DOL [1 : 1 vol%] (Du-Co), was applied to the electrolyte for the lithium deposition. The lithium electrode obtained from this electrolyte composition shows the best stripping efficiency (97.26%) and the stable reversibility. This is presumed to be due to the stability of the surface film induced by the Li-F component and the DOL effect of providing film flexibility.
