  • Biomass has been concerned as one of the alternative energy resources because it is renewable, abundant worldwide, eco-friendly, and carbon neutral. Quercus variabilis has been studied to understand pyrolysis reaction characteristics, and to evaluate the efficiency of bio-energy production from fast pyrolysis. Quercus variabilis were fast pyrolyzed in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor at various reaction conditions. The effects of pyrolysis temperature between $400^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ on product yields were investigated. The yield of bio-oil was changed between 36.98 wt% and 39.14 wt%, and those of gas yield was 33.40 and 36.96 wt% with increasing reaction temperature. The higher heating value (HHV) of bio-oil at $500^{\circ}C$ ($3.0{\times}U_{mf}$) was 20.18 MJ/kg. The gas compositions were similar for all reaction conditions such as CO, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$, and $CO_2$ selectivity was the highest (37.16~50.94 mol%). The bio-oil has high selectivities for furfural, phenol and their derivatives such as 1-hydroxy-2-propanone, 2-methoxy-phenol, 1,2-benzendiol, 2,6-dimethoxy-phenol.

  • OMiYakSung theory consists of various herbs that contain at least one or more of the five flavors. This theory has been used to prevent human diseases and enhance the immune system. The main objective of the present study was to investigate efficacy differences and changes in ingredients of blended and single herb extracts based on OMiYakSung theory. We selected three herbs Coptis japonica Makino, Cimicifuga heracleifolia Komarov, and white Poria cocos and assessed their physiological effect. As results, the blended extracts showed excellent cell migration effect at 400 ug/mL concentration, compared to the single extract. In addition, the blended extracts enhanced immune function by increasing the activity of dendritic cells and showed the highest antioxidant activity by DPPH assay and HPLC-ABTS assay. In this study, we developed a new materials that can be applicable to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals field by applying oriental medicine theory.

  • This study focused on a two-step process using heterogeneous catalysts to produce biodiesel using Nepalese jatropha oil as a raw material. As a first step, the effect of the repetitive regeneration number of Amberlyst-15 on the esterification reaction of FFA in jatropha oil was investigated. Second, the possibility of a transesterification reaction scale-up using a dolomite bead catalyst was tested. Using 120 kg of jatropha seeds from Nepal, 30 L (27 kg) of jatropha oil was obtained, and the jatropha oil yield from the seeds was about 25.0 wt%. The acid value and FFA content of jatropha oil were measured to be 11.3 mgKOH g-1 and 5.65%, respectively. As a result of the esterification reaction of jatropha oil using the Amberlyst-15 catalyst in the form of beads, the acid value of the reaction product could be lowered to 0.26 mgKOH g-1 when the fresh Amberlyst-15 catalyst was used. As the regeneration of the Amberlyst-15 catalyst is repeated, the catalyst has been deactivated, and the esterification reaction performance has deteriorated. The cause of the deactivation seems to be due to the catalyst being broken and impurities being deposited. It was confirmed that the Amberlyst-15 catalyst could be reused up to 5 times for the esterification reaction of jatropha oil. In the second step, the transesterification reaction, a dolomite catalyst, was mass-produced and used in the form of beads. By transesterifying the pretreated jatropha oil in a spinning catalyst basket reactor equipped with 90 g of dolomite bead catalyst, 89.1 wt% of biodiesel yield was obtained in 2 hours after the start of the reaction, which was similar to the transesterification of soybean oil under the same conditions.
