Sensitivity Analysis with Optimal Input Design and Model Predictive Control for Microalgal Bioreactor Systems (미세조류 생물반응기 시스템의 민감도분석을 위한 최적입력설계 및 모델예측제어)

  • Microalgae have been suggested as a promising feedstock for producing biofuel because of their potential of lipid production. In this study, a first principles ODE model for microalgae growth and neutral lipid synthesis proposed by Surisetty et al. (2010) is investigated for the purpose of maximizing the rate of microalgae growth and the amount of neutral lipid. The model has 6 states and 12 parameters and follows the assumption of Droop model which explains the growth as a two-step phenomenon; the uptake of nutrients is first occurred in the cell, and then use of intra-cellular nutrient to support cells growth. In this study, optimal input design using D-optimality criterion is performed to compute the system input profile and sensitivity analysis is also performed to determine which parameters have a negligible effect on the model predictions. Furthermore, model predictive control based on successive linearization is implemented to maximize the amount of neutral lipid contents.

Research and Development Trends on Bio-oil Upgrading via Catalytic Vapor Cracking (촉매 접촉 분해법을 활용한 바이오오일 개질 연구 동향)

  • Bio-oil has attracted considerable interest as one of the promising renewable energy resources because it can be used as a feedstock in conventional petroleum refineries for the production of high value chemicals or next-generation hydrocarbon fuels. Currently, catalytic vapor cracking is considered the most potential upgrading method for stabilization of bio-oil, which is a pre-process required prior to feeding bio-oil into refineries. This review introduces the recent research and development trends on bio-oil upgrading via catalytic vapor cracking, focusing on catalysts and upgrading methods used.

  • Biomass and coal are great potential energy sources for gasification process. These solids can be gasified to produce syngas and bio-oil which can be upgraded further to transportation fuel. Two biomass and three coals have been gasified with steam in a thermobalance reactor under atmospheric pressure in order to evaluate their kinetic rate information The effects of gasification temperature ($600{\sim}850^{\circ}C$) and partial pressure of steam (30~90 kPa) on the gasification rate have been investigated. The three different types of gas-solids reaction models have been applied to the experimental data to compare their predictions of reaction behavior. The modified volumetric reaction model predicts the conversion data well, thus that model was used to evaluate kinetic parameters in this study. The gasification reactivity of five solids has been compared. The obtained activation energy of coal and biomass gasification were well in the reasonable range. The expression of apparent reaction rates for steam gasification of five solids have been proposed as basic information for the design of coal gasification processes.

  • The dependence on global fossil fuels has been gradually reducing all over the world. Some countries which recognized the important of environmental values were joining to carry out international GHG goals. Our country has also participated with high targets (37% reduction compared to BAU 2030 years). So we need to supply materials of lower GHG value such as a bio-diesel. Bio-alcohol is one of the similar bio-fuels that can be reducing GHG. A lot of countries had tried to commercialize through various R&D for bio-alcohol. In this study, we analyzed the fuel characteristics of bio-alcohol fuel produced by domestic technology. And we evaluated a possibility to use as vehicle fuel through mixing of bio-alcohol and gasoline. The mixed fuels were satisfied with 2.3 wt% of oxygen content that is standard of the petroleum and petroleum alternative fuel business Act. We tried to evaluate a emission characteristic of vehicle by mixed fuel. In accordance with the results we tried to find a correlation between fuel and emission.

The Status of Production and Usage of Bio-Jet Fuel (바이오항공유 생산 및 사용현황)

  • The usage of jet fuel has been increasing with increasing passenger and logistics movements under globalization. CO2, which is the main global warming gas from aircraft, was charged about 3.5% of total global CO2 emissions and 12% of transportation fuel emissions. For these reasons, a lot of governments and the international civil aviation organization (ICAO) are trying to reduce CO2 emissions via the introduction of bio-jet fuel. In this paper, we showed the jet fuel properties, specifications, and presentative production methods of bio-jet fuel such as alcohol to jet (ATJ), oil to jet (OTJ), gas to jet (GTJ) and sugar to jet (STJ). Also, we described the status of global and domestic bio-jet fuel usage and the policy plan for efficient distribution.

  • The shortage of fossil fuel and problem of greenhouse gas exhaustion drive the production of biopolymer in a environment-friendly manner. Polyurethane is a polymer formed by reacting an isocyanate (-NCO) with a polyol (-OH) to form urethane link (-NHCOO-). Polyurethane is one of the most widely used polymers in automobile, construction and chemical industries. Two monomers for the polymerization of polyurethane, polyols and isocyanates, can be produced from renewable biomass such as plant oil, cellulose, lignin and etc. Biopolyol production from plant oil has already been implemented in commercial-scale production. In this paper, recent progresses on bio-based approaches on the production of biopolyols, bio-isocyanates and bio-substituent or isocyanate from bio-feedstock are reviewed alongside polymerization and characterization of biopolyurethane for industrial applications.

  • Gasoline generates organic acid and polymer (gum) by hydrocarbon oxidation depending on the storage environment such as temperature and exposure to sunlight, which can cause metal corrosion, rubber and resin degradation and vehicle malfunction caused by accumulation in fuel supply system. The gasoline which has not been used for a long time in bi-fuel (LPG-Gasoline) vehicle causes problems, and low octane number gasoline have evaporated into the field, but the exact cause has not been studied yet. In this study, we suggest a plan of quality management by investigating the gasoline oxidation behavior. In order to investigate the oxidation behavior of gasoline, changes of gasoline properties were analyzed at various storage conditions such as storage time, storage vessel type (vehicle fuel tank, PE vessel and Fe vessel) and storage circumstances (sunlight exposure and open system, etc.). Currently distributing gasoline and bioethanol blended fuel (blended 10%) were stored for 18 weeks in summer season. The sample stored in PE vessel was out of quality standard (octane number, vapor pressure, etc.) due to the evaporation of the high octane number and low boiling point components through the vessel cap and surface. Especially, the sunlight exposure sample stored in PE vessel showed rapid decrease of vapor pressure and increase of gum. Bioethanol blended fuel showed similar results as gasoline.

Economic Feasibility of Using Forest Biomass as a Local Energy Source (산림바이오매스의 지역 에너지 이용의 경제성 분석)

  • In this study, the economic feasibility of a local energy facility that uses forest biomass as an energy source was assessed. We analyzed profitability using data from the Forest Energy Self-sufficient Village Project financed by the Korea Forest Service. The energy facility has a cogeneration generator and wood chip boiler. Wood chip, which has lower heat value and is cheaper than wood pellets, is used as fuel. Revenue comes from the sale of electricity, heat, and renewable energy certificates. Additionally, we considered the sale of carbon credits as substitutes for fossil fuels. The expenditure consists of fuel costs and fixed costs, and the initial investment is treated as a sunk cost. Under the condition of a 55% operation rate and wood chip price of 95,000 KRW per ton, the annual net revenue is positive. Crucial factors for managing the facility sustainably are operation rate and fuel cost. A simulation in which two factors were changed showed that the annual net revenue is negative with a 50% operation rate and 100,000 KRW per ton of wood chip price. To improve net revenue, an increase in the operation rate or a decrease in the wood chip price is required. Additionally, selling carbon credits will make the operation of the facility more profitable. Furthermore, the payment required to procure wood chips could contribute to the rural economy. To foster the use of forest biomass for energy, the price for heat supplied from renewable energy sources should be subsidized.

The Effect of HHO Gas on the Performance of Industrial Diesel Engine Using Biodiesel Blended Fuel (흡기중의 HHO 가스 첨가가 바이오 디젤 혼합연료를 사용한 산업용 디젤기관의 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • A diesel engine works in high compression ratio due to injection of diesel fuel after compression of air. Therefore the engine has a high thermal efficiency, while nitrogen oxide is produced a lot in high flame temperature regions. In order to solve the problem this study HHO gas is added into the intake air of the industrial diesel engine. The test conditions are loads of 0%, 50% and 100% and engine speeds of 700 to 1900 rpm. The results show the maximum torque and pressure is increased, fuel consumption, smoke and CO emissions are decreased and NOx emission is remained at same level.

Determination of the Cetane Number, Derived Cetane Number and Cetane Index for Diesel Fuel by Additives (첨가제에 따른 경유연료의 세탄가 유도세탄가 및 세탄지수 분석)

  • Cetane number of diesel fuel for compression ignition engine is one of main properties for fuel ignition quality. Recently the cetane index has been replaced the cetane number in order to resolve the disadvantage of CFR engine test, but these two value have slightly difference values due to addition of various additives. In this study, we analyzed the cetane number, derived cetane number and cetane index for diesel fuel which was blended with various ratios of biodiesel, kerosene and cetane improver as additives. As a result, Cetane number showed the similar value with derived cetane number, but cetane index showed quite different value with cetane number when biodiesel and cetane improver were used as additives.
